If we're trying to win something this year, then keep Callahan.

If we're not, then trade him and get the best FUTURE player possible.

Don't do this half arsed "Trade him and get a decent player back and also a middle round pick" nonsense.

All in or all out, Sather.

The Rangers are always trying to win something. Sather's problem is he has shown zero ability to mitigate that vs. realities on the ground.

It isn't the norm and fans shouldn't expect players to take "hometown discounts".

This is a business. For the players it is a short career. They need to get as much as they can when they are still playing. I'd do the same and have no problem saying it.

I've been saying the same thing for years - I'm not even sure why so many fans bring it up when it is clearly the exception to the rule. I guess it's wishful thinking that a player would take less money out of a loyalty to the team but this is such an unrealistic scenario for most athletes.

The player has to make a choice. Do they take a home team discount to stay in a place they like or do they go for the money and lose the comfort zone of staying where you are familiar.

Like I said, Does Cally want to stay on Broadway for 5 years 26 million dollars or go to Edmonton for 7 years 42 million dollars.

None of the Big Teams are going to have the money this year to pay Cally what he wants.

There is such a thing as a hometown discount - it equates to how much value there is to the player in not having to uproot his family and start over someplace else. That has real value. And there are even RARE cases where a player will take less to help his team construct a winner (I think Brown in LA was on record as having done this - which actually only points to why Cally can, and will, expect more in an UFA deal), however they are the exception, not the rule.

Best case, you save 3-5% for the convenience of the player not having to move, disrupt the lives of his wife and kids, learn a new system and organization, break a comfortable routine, etc. But that's it.

Cap is going up 6+ million and there is a second round of amnesty buy-outs available to teams. Callahan will get multiple, significant offers.

In time they will become comfortable on their new team, and in their new city. Each player is different and there is a handful of things to consider when signing a contract.

If Cally is going for the money, I can't really blame him.

This is what I don't really understand about the decision making process here. Yeah, more money is better than less money, obviously. Having said that, I've got to imagine he wants to win a cup. He's not getting any younger, he's been hurt on and off recently, if he's going to play a decent role in a cup win for anybody, it's going to have to happen soon, certainly on this next contract. But, by pricing himself the way he's being reported to, he's going to pretty much guarantee that he goes to a team that is desperate and has a lot of cap space. Those aren't going to be competitors. It'll be the teams stupid or desperate enough to meet those demands. Look at Clarkson, cool for him he has a big contract, but he's an albatross on a team that isn't getting better. He's either bought out or stuck there because nobody is ever going to trade for that contract.

Of course, it's possible that A. We're seeing a tiny sample of a long negotiation and the reported demands are old or purposely high or something, or B. Callahan will sign a somewhat more reasonable deal, just wants to be on a specific team that isn't the Rangers, or wants to be on a team that is further along in the building process, or C. The extra millions of dollars mean more to him than whatever else, which isn't that unreasonable.

Callahan will likely get traded to a serious contender and have a run at the cup, then be able to sign with whoever he wants. A "lesser" team willing to prop up Callahan in the lineup, similar to how the Rangers have done for years, would likely be more willing to shell out that stupid price.

He'll also have 7 years to wait for said team to become a contender.

The almighty $ is more important to athletes than a championship A LOT more than fans are willing to admit. And it should.

Good teams will have money. Look at Capgeek, he doesn't need to go to a Florida. Most teams can fit him at 6. Anaheim for instance has 11 million coming off the books (Koivu, Selanne, Penner, Hiller). Just by removing Hiller and Selanne (6.5), you already have more than enough for Callahan before the cap bump.

Scott Sabourin huh? A guy whose CEILING is as a Callahan-type player? Come on..I'm not trading the proven product for a guy like Sabourin, unless it's Sabourin and a 1st or 2nd.

Here it goes again..read the post says he is a prospect they like but it will take more roster players

lol quantify rental value

You could look at players traded last year who were on expiring contracts, Clowe for example. I think some people expect to get a big package for Callahan and it's not going to happen unless he says he's going to re-sign where he's traded.

Fast, Bill Lundberg and Kristo don't excite me at all. Throw them in every and all deal that brings back a top 6 scorer.

Yeah, but a team that is smart about building isn't going to sign Callahan to that deal for that term. It's crazy.

Because he doesn't fit the system at all and he's worn out his welcome. It happens.

The Blues are also on an internal budget. Saving $4.1M off the cap next year would be welcome for their ownership.

He obviously got a bit of a buff aura. He is called inconsistent, but I don't know. He is very immobile. Maybe not necessarily without any kind of speed, but often he got a problem keeping up with the play.

I definitely agree with Viper though that he could fit well with Zucc. Stewart could grown on me. But I don't know, I mean, as more like a pick up for a 2nd rounder at 4m per I would like it. Callahan straight up? With a late 1st? The later sounds better, but a late 1st is still a late 1st...
