Can someone list any other rental deals involving a player of Cally's stature that have occurred over the past few seasons, for reference?

Iginla?

Hes a bit older, but less injured.

Despite pretty fierce competition among boston and pitt for him, he got moved for a 1st and a couple average/below average prospects

The Blues would definitely be going for it by adding Callahan. I think he would be a very good fit on the team too and would root for him if it came down to that. The Blues have the team/system/coach to go for it. They need to pay up. Cally could put them over the hump.

BRUINS LAND JAGR FROM DALLAS
The Boston Bruins acquired winger Jaromir Jagr from the Dallas Stars for wingers Lane MacDermid and Cody Payne, plus a conditional second-round draft pick in 2013.

IGINLA LANDS IN PITTSBURGH (NOT BOSTON)
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired winger Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames for wingers Ben Hanowski and Kenny Agostino, plus a first-round draft pick in 2013.

PENS PICK UP BRENDEN MORROW FOR TOP D PROSPECT
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired winger Brenden Morrow and a third-round pick in 2013 from the Dallas Stars for defenseman Joe Morrow and a fifth-round pick in 2013.

Dont know how comparable these are.... but from last april alone found those.

If Blues add Callahan instead of Miller, they are dumb.

Hopefully they'd also be dumb enough to give us a first/Jaskin with Stewart. For a player like Callahan, it wouldn't be farfetched.

Callahan makes more than Stewart. Callahan makes $4.825M this season. Stewart makes $4.1M. He is also signed for next season at $4.2M salary. Any deal the Rangers make will involve them taking back because Callahan is making $5M this season. So teams are close to the cap or using long term IR to run their teams. The cap hits are similar. $4.275M. $4.15M. The Rangers retain the difference in salaries for this season. The Blues save $4.2M next season. The Rangers should be compensated for that with more than Stewart and the Blues get Callahan for the rest of this season. They can use him to block pucks with his hands when Halak or Elliott struggle.

Nicely done.

If the Rangers can get something more than Stewart, this deal starts to make way more sense.

Thats my point. They have been a good team for a few years and they are looking crack the egg. Usually when teams are committed to really taking that jump and making the push they overpay to certain degree. Its also about getting other teams involved. We've heard rumblings for a few different suitors. The best news for the Rangers right now would be that other teams are into it, thus driving the price up.

What concerns me the most is Callys health over the next 4 and half weeks when there are only 14 1/2 NHL days to left to get a deal done.

Contemporaneous bidding process. STL wouldn't the sole suitor if he's available. Hossa, Kovalchuck deadline deals are better precedents since they didn't have NTCs at the time of trade a la Cally.

Vets with NMCs, or players with NMCs about to kick in (M. Richards) keep a bidding process from taking place. You don't think LA or VAN wouldn't kick the tires?

What about PITs that needs a RW? STL for sure because they can with a guy like Cally.

Shoot for the moon. Why settle to start?

I don't mind the idea of Chris Stewart coming back for Callahan but the Blues would have to add--looking at their prospect list--I'd be looking at goalies--like Allen, Binnington--d-men like Schmaltz, Vanelli--forwards like Jaskin, Rattie. Stewart and at least one of them.

Another deal would be Callahan for two of the above prospects--one of which would have to be Rattie, Allen or Jaskin. The Blues would be picking up extra salary but the Rangers would not be getting back a player to fill in for Callahan right away.

Best case scenario: Cally kills it in the Olympics and several teams want his services with less than a week to the deadline when the roster freeze is lifted.

Worst case scenario: Cally gets injured in the Olympics (or beforehand) and then jumps ship in the summer.

Epic Worst case scenario: The Rangers have a fantastic deal in place after the Olypmics but wait one more game to pull the trigger and out he goes...

Stewart would help offset the scoring that you would lose by letting Callahan go, but you are talking about trading a Captain here, a USA Olympian. A gutty, hard-nosed 5% of the league character guy that can get you much closer to a Cup . You need to pay more to get that IMO.

A high pick, a very good prospect. More. Stewart inst enough. The Rangers have to come away with this something short term and long term. Or just very good short term. Callahans dont grow on trees. Stewarts do.

Ive been all for trading Callahan - but thinking about what he does for this team and everything hes provided the fans over the years, this sucks now. It has to be done but god**** it get a good return.

Well said.

You don't do a deal for Ryan Callahan that is not a good deal. Sather can't and I don't think he will accept getting bent over on this.

Yeah I agree, i just feel like the hockey gods owe us one the other way considering some of the fleecing Sather has done on the trade market in years past. Sather getting a dose of his own chloroform.

He had a no trade clause, and picked the team he wanted to go to, no one knows if Boston or any other team would have given up more or driven up the price.

Thanks Dag.

Read also that Moulson is out until after Olympics, so won't be dealt prior to friday.

I can't see who could come off LA's roster for Callahan.

Maybe:

Matt Greene + some very strong non-roster assets for Callahan

and then

McGinn for Stralman

Not something I'd love, but something I could see the Rangers doing.

Do we know what the injury is? That's plenty of time for a team to send their doctors out prior to a trade.
