To get paid and win. You drop McDavid on this team in 2 years, you are a 1D away from being a top contender. What do we have 7 top two round picks so far this draft? We also have some good depth pieces coming. The knock has always been no high end pieces outside of Michkov. McDavid is the highest end piece in existence. This summer will tell a lot of where we stand. If we draft well it should be apparent by next summer and you’ll have a good for formula for going all in on McDavid and for him wanting to sign here.

We should have some of the highest cap space going forward. Jones just said in Charlie’s carnival interview that they are looking to add big pieces and not necessary this year but maybe next. That’s a clear shot towards McDavid. He also said we may be drafting high with our first next year. It doesn’t seem like they want to spend the money now.

Very likely that McDavid reups with edm. But to everyone’s point on here, why the f*** would anyone want to play in edm?
this team is way further away then adding McDavid making them a top contender ..lacking down the center...lacking D and G

Edm is a little thin to me. Drai makes 14 mill a year. McDavid will get more. They already have a hard time getting enough talent now. I think McDavid makes most teams a playoff team.

If and it's a huge if mcdavid were to become available you make a play. The fact he's the best player in the world at our greatest position of need means even if he laughs at it you have to be seen as involved.
I'm pretty hopeful that michkov isn't in a similar situation to mcdavid in that his early cost effective years were spent on non competitive teams and the team just never quite managed to get the depth behind him to bring home a cup

Looking at it from the Flyers' perspective, sure, adding McDavid makes sense. There isn't a team in the NHL where it doesn't make sense to add the best player in the league. But this still isn't engaging with why McDavid would choose Philly specifically, if given every possible option. Would you come to Philadelphia if you could follow Gretzky's path to LA? Kopitar and Kempe expire after 25-26, that's 12.5M of opened space for McDavid right there. Or go to New York, who frees up money by not resigning Panarin? Or Toronto, who gets back a ton of space by replacing Tavares with a JAG, and would be able to add McDavid to Matthews, Marner, and Nylander (plus everything we've been told about his GF connection)? Or Vegas, who could do the most Vegas thing possible by replacing Eichel with McDavid? Or any of 10 other clubs that would give their left nut to add him? Or stay in Edmonton, where you've already made your life and are the closest thing imaginable to a god walking the earth?

Sure, it'd be a dream come true to add McDavid to Philly. The point isn't whether it's a good idea to pitch him on coming here. The point is that no matter how much sense it makes for us, we're one of the long shots at best, because we aren't going to get him paid as well as going to one of the three king shit media markets, we aren't his surest shot to win going forward, and we don't have any form of home town advantage.

It's a Pipe Dream at best. McDavid is not coming to Philly.

Let's say McDavid is their grand plan.

What exactly is "New" about that approach with this organization?
Probably that is a player actually worth pursuing and not just the biggest name available at any given time. Obviously, this isn't really ever happening but if it did I don't think it is the same as it was in past years where they were just going after whomever was the biggest name not necessarily the best player or best fit.

McDavid to Philly e7

I doubt Risto will have retention if moved
I mean I could see them doing it to try and increase the return if they were smart. They're getting back more space after the dead cap space comes off the books for Peterson and TDA (plus a little more from part of the Atkinson buyout) and the cap is set to go up. No idea what any team would want to trade for him but even at 50% retention it is still overall clearing space. If they can leverage that into either a better pick/prospect or an additional pick/prospect I'd be all about it.

The Oilers played 74 playoff games in McDavid's first nine seasons, going 37-37. It's a safe bet Michkov won't beat that in Philly.

These kind of statements really don’t paint the right picture.

The Oilers are the exemplary standard of a completely failed tank. It’s not a stretch at all to say they played the majority of those games solely on the back of McDavid, even if Draisatl is there.

Like, I get the ragging on the Flyers ineptitude. But those saying that the Oilers are some order of magnitude better than the Flyers over the last 15 years really need to go back a few years.

Keep in mind, the Oilers, with the undisputed best player in the world and likely top 5 all time, have made it to the finals - once. In his entire tenure there of 10ish seasons. Crosby had cups by then, as did the Hawks when they drafted their all world 1st overall picks. Oilers for the first time last season even got past the 2nd round.

As to why the Flyers? There may not be a team in the league for a greater positional need, high end talent that is already well surrounded by a lot of youth and good-to-great depth. It’s a perfect fit for him, to come in and lead this team offensively, and be well supported by more than a single teammate.

Now, does this charter mean anything? For sure it does. You don’t miss the opportunity to woo him in this instance, even if it’s a simple “we’ll give you a ride.” They are absolutely selling him. Don’t know if it will work.

But next year, the Flyers will have a solid defense, Ersson returning to form as it seems and a lot of good depth players. A single superstar would make the team a contender, trending up. As much as we all like to tag on the Flyers, to which they have deserved, this crop seems to love being here - and that sells to players, even if we don’t get it as fans.

What makes you think the Flyers will have a solid defense next year? They have the 6th worst GA/G this season at 3.31 and will likely be trading Risto, who (and I can't believe i'm saying this) has been one of their best defensemen this year.
