Unless Sather gets to cherry pick some other teams top young players and prospects there is no way they are trading Gabby...

Rangers score a few more goals they are still a contender come playoff time. I know he's been cold, but Marian Gaborik will get hot again imo...

I shudder to think how many goals he would score if he was on LA or the Ducks though. I'm sure those teams would L O V E to get Gabby at the deadline.... but its not happening.

Whether or not Sather has a track record for these types of deals mean nothing. It's been reported that Sather is open to trading Gaborik. That doesn't mean he's going to trade him just to trade him. It has to be a deal that makes us better now and in the future.

The odds are against that happening by the trade deadline. But that doesn't mean that Sather isn't talking to people about it.

Yeah, it means nothing that in his 13 years as Rangers GM he's never traded a star in his prime for role players and draft picks.

Talking and doing is night and day. What else do GMs have to do during the day anyway?

The point is that if Sather trades Gaborik, it wont be for guys like Clowe or Fisher or Voynov. He would be violating his own constitution and setting a precedent.

I really don't see teams like Vancouver and San Jose as good trade partners. Cap issues of their own to deal with and not many appealing / younger assets available.

Sorry if this has been answered, but can you retain salary/cap hit for only a certain number of years? Say we traded Richie, can we retain a couple million for 2 years, and then his new club takes over the full contract after that?

Also, can salary retainment be used as a condition? i.e., Rangers will retain 3m of Gaborik's salary this year and if Gaborik fails to meet "x" level of production this year for his new team, the Rangers will be on the hook for 2m next year.

So much of this salary retainment stuff is still unclear, I'm sure there's a loophole here somewhere :sarcasm:

pretty sure that its for the remainder of the deal...so if we retain 3m of gaborik's salary it would be 3m in dead space next year.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Kings and Canucks are the teams pushing the hardest for him IF he is available. Phoenix IMO is a dark horse IF they aren't on his list. Detroit makes sense from a talent standpoint and the fact that he would fit their system with Datsyuk.

In the proposal you gave for Detroit as our trading partner, if it is White+Tatar, that is trash. If it is Filpulla + Tatar, that is getting closer to solid/equal value, but has zero chance of happening. I really don't get where you're getting this stuff from. I said this in the last trade proposal thread, but it got locked so I'm assuming you missed it... re: Gabby playing on Datsyuk's line:

I kind of doubt that. Datsyuk has primarily played with Abdelkader, Franzen, or Cleary this season. Abdelkader/Franzen are replacements for Homer (who used to play with Pavel) -- big bodies who crash the net, set up screens, and create space for Pavel. Cleary, when he has played on that line is in some ways filling a hole (Franzen injury) - but is slotted there over other options in part because he can dig out loose pucks and works hard. None of those things are adjectives I would associate with Gaborik's game. Nor does Gabby play an overly responsible defensive game despite playing under Torts. Gabby's no schmuck, but he just doesn't play a style of hockey that the Wings' organization has ever valued under Holland/Bowman/Dave Lewis/Babcock (rightly so in my mind).

Not to mention it just isn't a good fit. They aren't moving any top 4 d-men (they are desperate for d as it is and are cited in talks with other teams for top d-men). And they aren't moving any of their young talent in Tatar, Nyquist, Kindl, etc (even though they are fighting for playoff seed position, Holland isn't an idiot and doesn't throw away the team's future for a one or two year run; it's how they've been so successful for so many years).

That leaves core players like Filppula, Cleary, Franzen, Samuelsson (injured), Abdelkader, White (he's bottom pairing d, and there were reports that they have had talks with him recently about his future). All of those are players I could see them being open to trading for the right price. But I do not see a combination there that justifies a deal for Gaborik (from their, or our perspective).

Datsyuk thrived playing with Shanahan. Is he more physical than Gaborik? Yes. But as people watch Datsyuk dangle having Gaborik on the wing getting open to receive passes would be magical. Franzen on the other side.

I'd be more than willing to trade Gaborik IF we got a guy like Evander Kane back (obviously we would have to add to make it happen). Otherwise, keep Gabby... 40 goal guys don't grow on trees.

I have only 1 target this trade deadline:

Franzen, Tatar, White & Detroit 1st for Gaborik, Gilroy & 3rd
We could even retain a small bit of salary
Done & done

I am interested in Ott myself. I'd imagine that there are a number of available players on Buffalo considering their season and the Ryan Miller rumors.

Problem is, you don't trade guys like Gaborik to teams like Buffalo.

i wouldnt trade gaborik for Ott. i'm looking to add Ott to what we have now.

id look to move prospects, picks, and lower end guys

Oh no, no. I didn't mean for it to be interpreted like that. Gaborik was more in reference to higher end players. :)

But I don't see him going to Buffalo. Don't think it makes much sense from their perspective.

Sabres wouldn't want to trade Ott for Gaborik anyway. It will have to be picks and prospects.

I'd be interested in they could trade Gaborik for Justin Williams +, and then send that + or some other + to Buffalo for Ott.

Franzen, Tatar, White & Detroit 1st for Gaborik, Gilroy & 3rd

They can keep white and I don't want Franzen's contract.
I'd rather have one of Nyquist/Tatar + Andersson + 1st for Gaborik.
Whether it's realistic or not, that's the package I'd insist on, or keep Gaborik.

Back to what is realistic:

I wonder if the Rangers will take a flyer on Weiss. I heard last night from Bob Mckenzie on NBC Sports that it is not a sure thing that he is out for the rest of the season. He was mentioning the Panthers may move him to a team for a late pick as he is not going to re-sign in FLA and they may as well get what they can for him.

Marian Hossa + Pascal Dupuis for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito, and Pittsburgh's 1st-round pick in 2008 (Daultan Leveille).
Armstrong was effective 3rd liner with a goal scoring touch at the time, the kind people are clamoring for in return for Gabby. Espo was a recent middle of the 1st rounder. Crusher a high 2nd who still had some upside at the time. Who the hell is Leveille?

Ilya Kovalchuk + Anssi Salmela + 2nd for Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, 1st round pick in 2010 + 2nd.

Oduya was a top-4 D, still is depending on who you talk to, similar to a lot of potential "targets" in a Gabby trade. Bergfors a recent 1st rounder. Cormier a recent 2nd with a serious nasty streak, the kind people want included in return for Gabby.

Atlanta traded NJ's 1st (Kevin Hayes) and 2nd (Jeremy Morin) with a bunch of crap to Chicago for Big Buff and a bunch of crap.

It took a unique and monumental screw-up by Tallon in Chicago with his RFA's qualifying offers the previous year for Atlanta to get ONE player of value in return for Hossa and Kovalchuk. Where are the Thrashers now?

These are the kind of returns I see a lot of people proposing for Gaborik on this board and saying it's a great deal for NYR. The main trade board is simply horrible.

NYR are better off gambling on Gabby regaining his scoring touch or replacing Torts like Pitt, LA and NJ did in their winning seasons than trading him for scraps and never will-bes. For every McD there are AT LEAST 5 touted suspects who never pan out. It's A LOT easier to find a competent coach than a 40 goal scorer.

Besides, NYR Sting made a brilliant post last night. It all starts and ends with Richards. You can't win in this league without 2 competent top 6 centers. NYR got knocked out by NJ because Stepan did almost nothing all play-offs and you had post-Neil hit Boyle on 3rd line.

Now you have Richards doing almost nothing, a playoff ? in Stepan, and still a post-Neil hit Boyle on 3rd line. No wingers or top 4 D in this league are gonna make a difference. The only possible return for Gabby that makes sense is a top 6 Center with flexibility to switch to wing when necessary. Like Carter in LA, but obviously NOT him or a player producing as well as him this year. I don't see any available this season.

Weiss is keeping himself on the shelf.

He had wrist surgery, so I have a hard time thinking he'll be good for the playoffs.

My bet is that he will use the time off to rehab and get in shape for a big UFA deal.

Tallon got screwed.

The center to target from Florida is Goc. He upgrades Boyle, he's signed for next season at a manageable cap hit and he's a perfect bottom six C for a team constructed like we are/should be.

I think Sather will trade one of the 3rd rounders for one of Edmontons UFA d-men like Whitney or Smid.

Smid is steady, but Whitney's brutality on defense is made up for the fact that he's a bonafide PP specialist.

Maybe even Fistric for a 5th or 6th who's better than Bickel but somehow 50x slower

Scott Hannan is hurt but he fits the team's MO better than Eminger and Bickel.

As far as forwards for depth:

--Blake Comeau, Chuck Kobasew and Eroc Fehr are all cheap UFAs who can offer PK help.

With Staal coming back before the playoffs, and a relatively easier schedule to finish the season, I dont see any reason for a major trade.

The lineup the Rangers will present tonight against the Panthers (Staal notwithstanding) is the lineup I'd like to see them open the playoffs with.

I'm sure Smid will bring in much more than a 3rd.

i think they'll be more inter, than intra conference trading this year. The standings are just too tight. I can see teams like WSH or bottom teams selling off assests, but nothing too wild. Look for more east/west trades IMO.
