It looks like the successful formula is either be led by cheap young talent on ELCs or future hall of famers in the twilight of their prime. Thats why I mentioned ELCs before. When your leading goal scorers are earning low wage, it allows you to allocate that money towards depth, the blue line, and the crease.

The Rangers have a ton of money locked up in Nash (28), Gaborik (30) and Richards (32). If they're not leading the way, it's a problem of inefficiency.

Gabby's salary and cap hit next year is 7.5 mil. We can retain up to 3.75 mil in salary and cap if we trade him. If we retain 3 mil and get a player making 3 mil, that will be a 1.5 mil savings, which would give us a little breathing room next year. And the following year, Gabby's 3 mil would be off the books.

Gaborik at an AAV of 5m should be attractive to many teams. I have faith in Sather and Gorton to accept nothing less than a quality package in return. Think about what we could have gotten for Gomez if we retained a few mil, we probably could have gotten Gainey to give up Max Pac as a throw in :laugh:
 
Gaborik has the same salary and cap hit. The salary retention and Gaborik was brought up on the Hotstove last Saturday. Elliotte Freidman reported teams want the Rangers to retain some salary in the trade. The Rangers weren't interested in that. Gorton made that comment to Custance yesterday at the GM meetings. The Rangers retain $2M of the $7.5M. $5.5M for the acquiring team. If the Rangers get back players making $5.5M combined,the Rangers haven't gained any room. If they acquired 2 players for Gaborik,they are using that money on 2 players instead of just Gaborik. Maybe it opens up the number of teams in play for Gaborik.

Wouldn't be the dumbest move in the world if it significantly increased his value. They will have the room next season most likely. Keeping 2 million wouldn't really hurt them with the projections I have seen.
 
Salary Cap next year is $64.3 Million. They will have about $10 Million to re-sign Stepan, Hagelin, McDonagh. Hamrlik, Eminger and Gilroy will all walk, so they may need to sign another defenseman in addition.

If we got two solid productive NHL players and a prospect or a pick and had to retain 2 m for one year nd it made us a tougher harder to play against team for next season I'd do that .

I think a top-6 winger coming back is a necessity, unless a RH PP defensemen comes back (which I think is a long shot). After that I think bottom six depth has to be the next priority.

You and I have different priorities, I get that. But I find your Vancouver proposals to be objectionable value-wise, on top of not agreeing with my priorities.

I also find the Zack Kassian love to be a bit baffling.

And please, Mr. -31- was my dad.

Do you mean specifically from Vancouver? I don't see a fit there.

I actually like Kassian, I think he has promise, but not as a centerpiece in a Gaborik trade or in a trade for Hagelin.

Definitely wouldn't make sense to trade Hagelin.

Who would offer what you are asking for though? LA?

I won't comment on some of the proposed offers for Gaborik to Vancouver, but I'll say that I think there is zero chance Gillis moves Kassian in a package for Gaborik.

There was a rumored list of players Gillis wanted to trade Hodgson for, and all of them were physical, gritty guys.
Gillis has a mindset that he wants the Canucks to be a tough, physical team, and trading Kassian for a non-gritty guy goes against his beliefs.

It seems like a sudden thing that Kassian is valued highly enough to be the centerpiece of a deal for a 40 goal scorer.

His numbers aren't very good, and I don't watch the Nucks enough to really get a feel for his play. What does he do that shows his skill-set?

He's a good skater with good hands, but does little with that. Picture Enver Lisin who can fight.

It's both. The teams first agree on what percent of the cap hit is retained. Then, the same percent of remaining salary obligation is reimbursed to the team receiving the player.
