I think it's a little unrealistic to think that McIlrath can step in and take Girardi's minutes. I don't expect him to get more than 3rd Pairing minutes to start next season. Maybe he works his way up to 2nd Pair over the course of the year, but that's even being optimistic. Not every player is Ryan McDonagh.

Probably why BRB said "procure some of those minutes"...

Just a general question to throw out there....

How do we replace Girardi?

I see alot of people advocating trading him, but who could we realistically get to eat his minutes at a cheaper cost?

You want to pay him $26.25M over 5 years? Denis Wideman got that in free agency. The Rangers have spoken to Girardi's agent. If the Rangers could sign Girardi for $4M(in that neighborhood),he would have been signed by now.

Girardi will be at 30 at the end of this season. This is his last big contract.

Offer Girardi + a piece of appropriate value for Dustin Byfuglien.

Covers our right, fits in an offensive system, can play minutes. Winnipeg gets an all-star defenseman.

trade. him.

....gets an all-star defenseman whose play has dropped from that title of 2 years ago, who is going to be an UFA in a few months.

The value isn't there -- unless the + is something like JT Miller and a first.

Dan Girardi is not an all-star defenseman -- hes a defenseman that was an all-star once. Its akin to calling Petr Prucha a 30 goal scorer.

Unless Winnipeg gets window to negotiate and sign him, they can't possibly make that move for a player who can walk at the end of the year.

What is the plus is Del Zotto?

NYR have shown Falk can play top 6, and have said we may need to make room for big Mac soon.

I don't want to, but we're going to pay that much to replace him, likely with an inferior player. We can't replace him from within, and the UFA market is garbage. Tom freakin' Gilbert is the best RHD option on the market that isn't 35+. That should tell you all you need to know. Sign Girardi early, try to get a small discount if you can. If his contract demands give us no choice but to trade him, then so be it, but at least you tried.

i think having Falk here is the reason that when McIlrath comes up he can learn a bit from Falk.. that is why i think Del Zotto will be dealt for a forward..

McIlrath and Falk Moore will be the 5th 6th 7thdman with Moore switching depending on the lineup down the road.. after the olympics i think McIlrath will stay with the team after gets a game or 2 after Christmas.

I think part of the idea of trading Girardi would be to try and get a puck mover who can play on the right side.

Conor Allen looked good in pre-season as well. He plays the right side.

There are options out there to add a RD if need be.

i think mcilrath will get a look this year at some point.

next year having him play reg 3rd pair minutes depends upon what we replace girardi and del zotto with.

adding falk now is fine if we move mdz for forward help but we really need a quality rh pmd added asap.

having falk and mcilrath available makes us tougher but thats a pretty scary proposition if we arent adding a real good puck mover.

I understand your reasoning and don't disagree with it, but who says we can't trade Girardi and get a RH dman back in the deal? Girardi and a conditional pick to tampa for Connolly and Gudas/Sustr? No idea if tampa would do a deal like that, but there must be a deal like that out there somewhere that we can make.

I feel Stralman can take the 1 RD position and that could make it easier to find a #2 RD. McI comes up as the 3rd. Could trade DZ for that 2RD

I think Falk is more of a 1 year stop-gap unless he really takes a big step forward. He is also a decent #7 in case of injuries. The new Eminger.

hes had some good games. at times he looks legit. hes looked pretty bad as well but so has pretty much every dman on our roster.

i actually like his simple, rugged game. he brings something that we really dont have with ahy other dman now. if he continues to play like every game is his last, hes more than serviceable.

and may well have a spot next season depending on mcilrath.

Falk is an RFA. I don't really see him going anywhere, but he's really a 6/7 guy. Not a stop-gap, but a guy that plays a specific role on the team.

I'd keep Falk around next year for sure. He can play on the bottom pair or sit in the press box as needed. He's a RH shot. He brings some physicality to the defense and he will be cheap to re-sign.

Eminger when needed was able to play 2nd pairing.

Falk is totally different player, but does fill the same sort of role. I like the guy, though he is far from perfect.

Yeah, but Eminger looked TERRIBLE on the 2nd pair. One of those cases where there's a limit of the number of minutes a guy can play effectively.

Falk is also 25 and more physical than Eminger was... he is a better version of Stu Bickel... Peluso is a tough kid, was not shocked that he lost that fight.. I wish Rangers put in a claim last year for Peluso

Henrik wanted 8 years. It wouldn't be a surprise if Callahan and Girardi want MAX contracts too and they want to settle at 7 years. The Rangers can't do that and they can't allow the asset to leave for nothing. They aren't a Cup contender which can justify letting a player let leave for nothing.

Here's a fun speculation question to break the depression around here...

Didn't Stamkos sign for the minimum number of years it took to get him to UFA at age 25?

Glen Sather will never concede that perfectly justifiable point. Its about the here and now. He'll deal with the roster issues hes created in the summer. The Rangers will be buyers just like they always are.

He signed a 5 year deal after his ELC. He's in his 6th year and has 2 years left on his contract. He will be a 26 year old UFA in 2 years and yes, I would give him whatever he wants to get him here.
