Something like 5/30 is the most I can see Cally getting from Rangers. Bit rich for me, it'd a tough decision.

Regarding Girardi, the question is less about what a good soldier he has been for us, and more about where the team dynamic is going.

AV preaches man to man defense and skating to join the play in transition for his D-men. These are not exactly Dan Girardi strong suits.

Tread carefully with this guy.

There's also a lot of wear on those tires.

Exactly this. If they let him walk for nothing, I am going to be uber pissed. Only awful management allows major assets to walk.

Offer him a decent contract, 4 years @ 18-20 million. If he says no, look to trade him immediately.

That to me would be an example of being "married to a system" which I think is dangerous. Don't want to sound like a broken record have posted it a bunch of times, but there is a reason why most NHL teams don't play man D.

My personal opinion is that the Rangers will consistently be behind the Pittsburghs and Caps of the division offensively barring incredible drafting luck. And that it is stupid to try to play an aggressive skating defensive game against them with a group solely consisting of quick puck movers. Those opponents WILL find a way to sustain offensive pressure and the Rangers need an answer when they do.

I will have an aneurysm if Girardi is signed to anything more than $4.5 mill.

I will also if Cally is signed to a penny over $5 mill.

If Girardi is willing to take say 4/20 I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Cally will be tricky. Then again if there's a guy that would take somewhat of a discount it'd probably be Callahan.

Doesn't Callahan have a really difficult agent, though? I'm sure RB knows off the top of his head.

If that's the case, I don't see Callahan taking much of a hometown discount. Buffalo is going to have tons of cap space, and would probably throw a blank check at him. Could see Toronto doing the same.

Also, Callahan has looked terrible this year. I know he's returning from a shoulder injury, but he just doesn't even look to be close to the player he's been for us in the past. He just looks like he's slowing down, and his shoulder injury should have nothing to do with that aspect of his game. I'm just extremely wary of giving him a big money contract. Smells like the Drury situation.

I would actually be more comfortable re-signing Girardi. At least him game has never depended on being overly fast or physical.

Good points. I think the safest route is getting versatile players capable of playing an assorted array of games. Out of all our defenseman, I think Girardi might be the least versatile. He really excelled in that collapsing system that limited skating and put an emphasis on shot blocking.

I understand your concerns about being married to a system, but I doubt the Rangers are going back to that route anytime soon.

I could get on board with those numbers.

However, I think Callahan gets PAID. I just hope it's not us. I would bet my life on Buffalo throwing a $7M/per contract for 5/6 years at him, and I want absolutely no part of that.

$4-5M on Girardi for less than 5 years I would absolutely do.

im really praying hard for a deadline deal with girardi and callahan going to buffalo. cally goes home and girardi can stay in ny. will they take on those contracts thought ?

they have assets i like.

oh how i would love to pry joel armia away from them

pipedream

I'm more scared of Cally's deal than Girardi(& I'm a big fan of trading Dan)

I feel like there's a better chance of Cally's value plummeting than Girardi's.

I'd still probably trade both.

Overpaying bottom 6 players & defensive defenseman are 2 cardinal sins of UFA.

The Rangers need to add a young puck mover to their future blue-line. Move Girardi and get one back + a young forward.

He has been a great soldier for this franchise but someone will overpay him...

Buff would've done this two years ago.

I love Joel Armia and I'd throw a party if we got him.

I feel pretty much the same way. A big deal for Cally scares the bejesus out of me.

Girardi, however, I would try to re-sign. Unless the value coming back in a trade is just too good, or he just wants way too much money.

Girardi, outside of Lundqvist and maybe Stepan, is the hardest player on our roster to replace, IMO. We don't have the RHD depth within the organization to replace his Top-Pairing minutes, and the free agent market is very thin this year. If Stralman walks too, McIlrath would be at the top of our RHD depth chart. Scary thought.

The Rangers had the fewest dollars committed on D in 11-12 in the NHL when the cap was $64.3M. Staal and Girardi were on their current contracts. DZ and McD were on their ELCs. Sauer had a cheap contract. $1.25M. Stralman,Woywitka and Bickel made no money.

McDonagh has a $4.7M cap hit. Staal is on the same contract. Girardi is up for a new contract. DZ is up for a new contract. McKenzie said on TSN radio(Toronto)yesterday that DZ will probably be traded. No other details were given. No timetable. It could be tomorrow or in March. Stralman is up for a new contract. Moore is up for a new contract.

Lundqvist will be making $1.7M more. $8.5M. Add all of the commitments on D if all of the players are kept. $67M-$70M cap. Pay Callahan. Doesn't leave much room to improve the team. The same problems still exist. The D are all the same players. Staal. Defense first. Girardi. Defense first. Stralman. Defense first. Stop coaching Pat recently asked AV about Stralman on the PP. AV doesn't believe Stralman can handle those duties. DZ. Who knows what he is good at. McDonagh has added offense to his game. The one bright spot on D. Moore is a work in progress. The team doesn't score any goals. Their bottom six players have scored how many goals? Boyle has 1. D. Moore has 0. Pyatt has 0. Pouliot has 2. Dorsett has 2. Fast,Asham,Mashinter and Powe failed to record a point in their few games.

I don't know why Callahan would want to play for the Sabres apart from the one reason that his hometown Rochester is close to Buffalo. Really that team is several years away from having any shot at contending again. I could see Callahan fitting in very well with a team like the Bruins. I think that Boston could fit him into their lineup in a way that would accentuate his strengths and elongate his career and give him a real shot at winning a championship.

id take Armia, Larsson, McNabb, Foligno, any of their russian kids up front and on defense, if Rangers werent a small team i wouldnt mind Ennis..

A Cup contender will be interested in Girardi. A team like Buffalo has no interest in him. That team is rebuilding. Even Callahan going there seems a stretch. Miller will be traded. They have to spend to the floor but Callahan would be wasting his time. By the time that team is good in 3-4 years,Callahan will be 32-33.

Tampa Bay and Anaheim would be teams looking to add a player like Girardi. They both need help on defense but look to be promising teams. Both teams have pieces the Rangers should like and key-in on.

Just a general question to throw out there....

How do we replace Girardi?

I see alot of people advocating trading him, but who could we realistically get to eat his minutes at a cheaper cost?

San Jose is a team which needs to win one of these years. This is their best chance.

This summer, it'll be 4 years since we drafted him, I'd expect McIlrath to be given a chance to procure some of those minutes.

I think it's a little unrealistic to think that McIlrath can step in and take Girardi's minutes. I don't expect him to get more than 3rd Pairing minutes to start next season. Maybe he works his way up to 2nd Pair over the course of the year, but that's even being optimistic. Not every player is Ryan McDonagh.

I didnt say he'd take all the minutes. I think they need to re-sign Stralman and look into another RD on the cheap.

Not every player is Ryan McDonagh, but somebody will be paired with him and look a lot better than he actually is -- like Girardi has done.
