Probably. I think it's easier (read: cheaper) to fill out your defense via free agency than it is to fill out your offense via free agency. If I were running things I'd try to move MDZ for young offense and go bargain hunting for defense in July.

Agreed. Seems it'd be wiser to try and nab some top-6 talent for DZ than a lateral move for a top-4 D.

I like the concept of an Erik Johnson, Del Zotto swap - but I doubt COL feels the same way.

Outside of Phaneuf, the UFA list of D-men this off-season is pretty barren.

I think you need to get a decent return for someone who's 23 and still has loads of potential. He needs a mentor and a change of scenery. He didn't just lose his raw talent and ability. He needs someone who will bring it out in him again.

That's why I think he should be packaged with something else. I think you need to think offense with him too.

I firmly believe that we're going to sign Phaneuf this offseason to a monster contract. He seems like a natural fit. We'll be looking to retool our blue line. He'll be looking for a big pay day. We have a lot of cap room. He has the characteristics that we want - grit, point shot, crease clearer, toughness.

If they want a young top 4 puck moving DMan they have to give up something substantial

I'm telling you. All reports from when he was in the RFA struggle had them valuing him very very highly. DZ/Step + Kreider + maybe more was the report.

Especially now with Ror's value increasing and DZ's decreasing? Not happening.

I don't know how highly they value Girardi, but it wouldn't be out of the picture if Girardi with an extension for ROR might be a good trade for both teams.

Pipe dream at this point.

deff not!!!

ROR with his shenanigans last year signing, will making it interesting but (not saying well get him)..

they will move him or stasny for sure! both will not be on the same team going into the 2014-15 season

i think something around Brass,MDZ, picks and prospect for Stasny and barrie would work.. Barrie has been some what up and down this year (AHL-NHL) and could be available and both will fill needs for us moving fwd..

we get a 1/2c and a top 4 potential dman..

if we are still struggling i would move Callahan for pics and RFAs currently in NHL top 6 potential fwds/players will gritt.. doubt he will be moved

G i dont move and resign him.. harder role to fill, plus in FA we would pay our the ass for his replacement and more then g would cost..

offseason depending on how things go i resign stasny, sign Carcillo

If Dion is listening to offers from us i sign him 7x7-7.5AAV, look to move staal, 1st + for Kane, Eberle/Yak, top 6 fwd, if we get Dion..

go into 2014-15

Kreider-Step-Nash
Kane/MZA-Stasny-MZA/Eberle/Yak
Hags-Lind/Miller-Kristo/Callahan/Prospect from callahan trade or sign seto/raymond
Carcillo-Konopka/Boyle-Dorsett

Mcd-Barrie
Staal/Phan-G
Moore-McIrath

idk but those would be what i would try and pull off.. i doubt sather moves any of those core guys (G, Callahan, Staal) more like MDZ, Brass, hags even and of course prospects

And the rangers value MDZ and Kreider and Step highly.

The avs will move ROR for a top 4 young Dman. Maybe not MDZ, but it will be for someone.

I don't think you can assume anything about ROR based on his hold out and trade discussions from last year. By all accounts, Roy loves him and sees him as a major piece moving forward. I'd be really shocked if they traded him.

Doubt Carolina would trade Faulk at all, let alone for Staal or MDZ.

What high end piece would they trade to bring back a top 4 young offensive DMan?

They have almost nothing for prospects (other than the guys already playing in the NHL)

Or Horvat

Gaunce would be available, Horvat definitely not for a rental. We did just trade Schneider for him, too high risk if Callahan were to walk. Gaunce probably ranks 3rd or 4th on our prospects depth after Horvat, Shinkaruk and there could be a case made for Corrado.

I'm sure something like Gaunce + 3rd would be reasonable. He's a big leadership guy getting the chance to work on his offensive game in Erie now after getting traded. Vigneault is very high on him, loved the kid since his first prospects camp.

The core issue with this team is that for years, we really only have 3 or 4 1st/2nd line capable guys. The remaining players are 3rd liners at best on teams like Chicago, LA, Detroit, etc. Plus our 4th line is incapable of providing scoring/production in comparison to tier 1 teams. Until we trade some of these and get some guys like JT Miller or Lindberg or Kristo developed enough to contribute at NHL level, we will not be scoring >2.0/game.
Plus AV's system just requires players to play more independently within a system and a lot of guys don't have the skillsets to play that way. Trades, and being smarter this summer about personnel will go long way towards next yrs team

Would still love ryan Oreilly in return if they moved a D to colorado.

Thank you for your interest in our Player, but he won't be traded.

You're correct, NYR might like an "EJ-for-MDZ" swap but Colorado would most definitely NOT like that concept.

Salary Cap is going up, making it easier for us to keep both Stastny and O'Reilly if we want to. For the entirety of Joe Sacco's coaching tenure with the Avalanche we kept saying that Stastny just needed an ACTUAL coach with an actual system and he'd return to his pre-Sacco form, and he has done that thus far this season...though I will admittedly say that his scoring has dropped off since his return from a minor Back injury.

Glad you want the players, but I don't see the Avalanche giving up Stastny unless he makes it absolutely clear that he will not come back to Colorado after this year, and I just plain do not see them giving up O'Reilly. He's (O'Reilly) become our #1 LW

Why do they need to give up a high end piece? That team is young. I think they'd probably welcome a veteran top-4 guy. Someone in that 27-29 range.

I think a package of Elliot + a pick, or something along those lines, could generate interest for a team who has a top-4 defender available and isn't going anywhere this year. A team could throw a rental their way to take a flyer on Joey Hishon.

Why would Colorado keep duchene stastny mackinnon o Reilly? That's a dynamic group where you trade one or 2 of them and make the team a lot deeper for years to come.

O'Reilly has been transitioned to LW to play on Duchene's line, and has looked VERY good there as well. The two of them have some really good chemistry.

Stastny could be transitioned to Wing as well, that's where he played some in College and in the beginning of his career with the Avalanche. I think a potential line of Landeskog-MacKinnon-Stastny could end up being really good down the road, IF the Avs decided to keep Stastny.

Joey Hishon has been good for Lake Erie this year, could be worth a shot. Rather have Barrie over Elliot.

Why are the Rangers asking for a top-4 D in return for Del Zotto? What teams out there want to make a lateral move?

With the amount of holes this team has to fill, we shouldn't require a d-man back for DZ. what about center or a top line LW? Seems like unnecessarily limiting our options. If Sather feels Girardi or Staal won't sign, why not one flip them for a dman?

I'd have to think that part of wanting a top-4 defender back for Del Zotto was to stabilize the defensive group that has thus far looked pretty underwhelming this season. Could be a situation where the Rangers wanted to add another stay-at-home guy so they could pull the trigger on another deal that sent Staal or Girardi for an offensive minded defender, or scoring forward.

Saw Gaunce's name come up a few times. Not particularly interested. I think he winds up as a good shutdown 3C, but I'd wager on Lindberg filling that role more effectively for us sooner than Gaunce would.

I'd have interest in Kassian and Tanev from Vancouver. Kassian has struggled recently, but he projects as a player that we simply do not have in the organization right now. Tanev is a very sold defender who can move the puck. Not really a PP option, IMO, but could absorb a lot of Girardi's minutes if he was to be traded.

Yeah, its just easier to find matches when you trade for different positions. Much harder when you try to trade for an opposite side d or off/def specialty.

I don't know much about Colo's system but what about getting Siemens and a pick?

Also, I remember Hishon was gonna be a great player and he had a really bad concussion. Is he still a viable prospect or damaged good?

True. Is he a center?
