Stastny and Phaneuf will get 7 years and 7m+ per year on the open market. Stastny and Phaneuf will be 28 in the summer. Thats not bad in terms of what ages we would be paying those 2 will cost a lot. They arent even options unless we let go of Girardi and Callahan.

The type of players people are looking for are all big names. It's better to go after kids with NHL talent who aren't as well known but will have good careers.

Trade from strength. Go after contenders prospects. I'd rather try and get the Nietos, Coyles, Zuckers,Tiofollis, Brendan Smiths of the world instead of E. Kane.

Build a team. Build an identity. Build a culture.

I might screen shot this post. Yes. Get depth and character in here, forget Kane. Fill up all 4 lines with passion, heart, skill and grit. Excellent post.

Hell yeah. Coyle is a guy I would absolutely love to target specifically.

Agreed completely. After all, our best team recently was built that way. Too much focus on existing stars and not enough on creating our own.

Something just tells me we trade Callahan to Vancouver for pick/prospect and they win the cup . I wouldn't mind that at all actually

The difference between the kids you're talking about and E. Kane is they (and perhaps even Kane himself) are not available without a massive and gutting over-payment. Teams with kids like that are looking to remain contenders and let their kids grow with their team, not the Rangers.

You draft those kids, not trade for them, especially not from rebuilding, up and coming teams. They let them go from a position of strength, to fill one of weakness. Other young players who help them. Who can the Rangers trade from a position of strength that's young to get an equal young player back? Del Zotto? Hardly even a strength any more.

Contenders might part with a young player for a guy like Cally, or Girardi if they thought it was the missing piece. That's all we've got.

Bruins center combo is amazing with krecji Bergeron but neither are ppg players. We need to follow that model honestly because we won't get a ppg center unless we draft one. I rather give stastny a big contract than Callahan due to position and point production. We gotta draft a LW in my opinion and sign a stop gap one that can play 2nd/3rd line role

If we could trade Girardi for a player like Coyle and a Minnesota draft pick... that would be a phenomenal return - for him.

It could be attractive to Minnesota as they would pair Girardi up with Suter and have a legit shut down pairing.

I'm in favor of trading Girardi at the deadline for youth. I'm in favor of trading DZ + Brassard too.

Cally should be part of the solution, but at the rate he's going with his injuries... I'm warming up to the idea of getting a max return for him too.

AV wants players to suit his offense. Get players that suit his style. He's had immense success in the West, a much harder division across the board than the East. Give him his fair shake.

We have prospects that warrant roster spots next year. Miller, Kristo, McIlrath... maybe more.

Too many dead-weight players on this team. I would say that a change is near imminent.

I don't know anything about Canuck prospects, what's he play and what's his value?

could be another Kesler or could be another Gaustad

"If Gaunce were a better skater, he would be considered top-6 material. As it stands, his attention to the defensive side of the game and ability on face-offs makes him a definite candidate for role as a third-line checking center. Gaunce has the size to battle with most players but doesn't always have the speed to keep up. But he'll pay attention to the defensive zone and win most of the puck battles along the boards, making him a potentially valuable player when a team is looking to preserve a lead."

Avalanche GM Joe Sakic has been scouring the market looking for a blueliner. Colorado isn’t happy with the mix it has among its defencemen and the club knows it has to make changes to compete in the playoffs. It’s believed the Avs have shown interest in Rangers D Michael Del Zotto, but the club has made it clear it wants a top-four defenceman in return and Colorado doesn’t have that kind of real estate to offer up .

The Avs don't have much to give up.

If the Rangers want a top 4 D in return for DZ,which player(s)aren't they planning to bring back?

Garrioch wrote Rutherford won't trade the Staal brothers,Skinner or Ward.

Rutherford has been busy. Unlike some other GMs, he hasn’t sent out an e-mail to indicate all of his players are available and hung the dreaded ‘For Sale’ sign, but the talk is you can have pretty much have anybody on the Carolina roster with the exception of C Eric Staal, C Jordan Staal, LW Jeff Skinner or G Cam Ward. The Hurricanes are pushing for a playoff spot in the East, but Rutherford would like to make changes. The three names we’ve heard the most: D Tim Gleason, LW Jiri Tlusty and RW Tuomo Ruutu. Keep an eye on Rutherford because he has never been afraid to make changes

Would Rurtherford do Staal or DZ for Faulk? Gives the Rangers a righty. Two young righties if you include McIlrath. Both of them are the same age. Born one month apart. Add McDonagh and Moore. They would have either Staal or DZ. Trade Girardi and Stralman. Skjei waiting in the wings in a year or two. Change up the mix.

Why not Staal for Murphy.

Also, if Colorado is gearing up for playoffs, wouldn't Girardi make more sense. We match up better with them giving Girardi for a higher return than DZ for a top 4 defenseman.

Why are the Rangers asking for a top-4 D in return for Del Zotto? What teams out there want to make a lateral move?

One of 3 things:

1) They must feel Girardi isn't going to resign
2) They must feel that Staal isn't going to extend
3) They must feel that Stralman isn't the answer in the top 4

Or a combination of the 3...

Probably. I think it's easier (read: cheaper) to fill out your defense via free agency than it is to fill out your offense via free agency. If I were running things I'd try to move MDZ for young offense and go bargain hunting for defense in July.

I think you need to pair Del Zotto with someone else to get a good return.

Kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Brassard and Del Zotto together. Get a 2nd line center in return. Give a team depth for talent.

Then I think you need to look to retool for the future with Girardi and possibly even Callahan.

Girardi to Colorado? What do they have to offer that makes it a pertinent trade for both teams? They want to make the playoffs. They want grit. They want experience. Girardi kills 3 birds with 1 stone for them. We need something relevant back. Besides MacKinnon who will be untouchable, do they have anything that makes sense for us? Loosely looking at their farm, I would think not.
