I will preface this post by admitting that I am slightly under the influence at the moment.

While perusing the free agent list on capgeek, something ridiculous hit me that I could see Slats doing. Now I think this is moot because I think both players re-up with their current team. What if we traded Callahan and Girardi at the deadline for futures (nothing specific, but at least a 1st rounder and a good prospect between the two of them, perhaps a depth player or two), and in the summer, Slats makes a run at both Marleau and Thornton? I realize that this idea is stupid but it could give Slats the best of both world: remaining a moderately competitive team while gaining futures. We all know old Glen will not properly rebuild this team. Plus, this gives AV more horses he can use for his system which kind of led to me thinking this ****.

That's not crazy at all. I doubt SJ lets Marleau go since he's been a career Shark, but Thornton is such a prototypical Sather signing.

I would think that the Rangers would get at least one NHL ready prospect out of deals around Girardi and Callahan, which would negate the need for both Marleau and Thornton.

I honestly wouldn't mind this scenario, but I doubt SJ lets Thornton and moreso Marleau both leave.

Break it down people. Brooks wrote it today. The team is going nowhere.

Girardi
Callahan
Stralman
Boyle
Moore

Those are the group IIIs. Trade them. Gorton should make the trades. Old man Sather should be sent to La Quinta for the rest of the winter where the other rich senior citizens spend their winters.

At the very least, move those 5 group IIIs. The Rangers will get nice returns for them. The Rangers can get a two 2nds back for Boyle and Moore. Stralman would be a good fit on the Hawks. They need another D to play with Leddy. Then there are Girardi and Callahan.

The Rangers need an overhaul.

It starts with those guys.

Del Zotto needs to be moved. Who knows what the future holds for Staal?

Its time to make some hard decisions.

I wouldn't move Stralman. He's a good 3rd pairing option that shouldn't be too expensive. The Rangers will need him once Girardi (hopefully) gets traded.

At this point, I'd move Staal over Del Zotto. Cut bait on him while you can. He's approaching damaged goods territory along with Callahan. Bad fit for AV's puck possession style. Del Zotto has played well on the 2nd pairing on the left side.

Straman is what he is. He looked bad in the Columbus game. The Calvert goal was his fault. Lundqvist didn't play it well but Stralman was out of position and Calvert is a really good skater. Inconsistent. There is too much money available in the system with the cap increase. He will get a very good contract.

Move both Staal and Del Zotto. AV doesn't like DZ. Staal is up for a new contract next summer. Hopefully,he gets healthy and can return in the next few weeks. The Rangers can go from there.

For everyone against not signing a guy like Thornton I think he's exactly what we need IF he continues to perform like he does but of course that's a big if and unlikely but depth like
Thornton
Stepan
Brassard
Boyle

Down the middle is real nice with guys like miller and lindberg who can take the 3c and 4c. Out biggest goal is to find a 1C which is near impossible

Kreider stastny Nash
Steen stepan zucc
Hagelin brassard miller
Dorsett Boyle Sh. Thornton
Kristo
Lindberg

We seriously need help at LW besides kreider and hags we have none. And I don't wanna see hags in a 2nd line role he's suited for 3rd we're missing a nice second line I think I guy like steen and stastny would help this team for the right price of course.

Moving Stralman, Del Zotto and Girardi with Staal having another concussion I don't think would be a good idea, unless we get back solid defenseman in the trades.

Regardless, I agree that we need to make moves here. This team needs help.

This organization is a mess. Vicious cycle incoming.

We dump torts and sulli. We keep most of the same players.

Now there's talk of dumping av and all the current vet fa's after finally its realized that this team is void of any high end offensive talent. Paging mr. Clark....

The spotlight should be shining right on sathers face and to a lesser extend our draft day decisions.

Until he's gone, we're going nowhere.

As for our next move, you MUST make a statement move and inject some new life into the team immediately. We know who's gotta go. Find the best deals and make them. Soon.

No to anything other than rebuilding for the near future. No band aides.

Stralman was horrendous in the Columbus game. However, he has been the team's most consistent defenseman up until that point. He gets the benefit of the doubt from me.

I wouldn't move both Staal and Del Zotto, it's one or the other. Del Zotto is 23 and can still put it all together. Staal would garner a larger return in a trade if healthy. Del Zotto is the better piece moving forward. Tough decision.

My slightly insane trade scenario:

Trade Kreider + Brassard + Lindberg + 2nd for E. Kane

Move Staal + 1st for Faulk

Trade Del Zotto straight up for Pacioretty

Trade Cally, Girardi, for picks at the deadline.

Resign Stralman under 3.5M.

Sign Statsny and Phaneuf.

Amnesty Richards

Kane Statsny Nash
Patches Stepan Zucc
Hagelin Miller XXXX
UFA Boyle Dorsett

McD Faulk
Phaneuf Stralman
Moore Falk/ McI

Although we lose a lot of youth, we add it back with Kane, Faulk, and the picks we get for Cally and Girardi. We are still missing a 3RW and a 4LW which shouldn't be too difficult to find.

I love how the first trade is a huge overpayment, the second trade is a mild overpayment, and the third trade is a fleecing.

Deja Vu. Slather has only been short sighted with his planning. It is time for a major overhaul. Signing Lundqvist long term was a mistake. Clark, for all his praise has not done the job. In Gordie we trust has been a myth. Give Gorton the job and let him clean house and develop a real five year plan. The start of any long range plan must start with trading Lundqvist. although arguably the best goalie in the NHL, he will never win a Cup in NY.Winning a Cup, not making the playoffs and being eliminated is the goal. The team lacks any sort of depth and will not compete with shot term fixes.Trading Lundqvist,Callahan, and Girardi are the first steps in the rebuild.

I just can't, for the life of me, figure out why Lundqvist signed that contact at that time if he cares about winning a Cup. They had to have had discussions about a rebuilding plan that he bought into. I can't see how a guy who has looked so openly frustrated at times would sign otherwise, unless his real motivation is simply NYC + $$$.

Moving our UFAs at the deadline doesn't necessarily mean rebuild. It means re-tooling if you get young talent like John Moore which is almost at an NHL level back in the deal.

I am thinking it is less and less likely with every passing game that Callahan and Girardi are back next year. That's a big section of this team's recent history, but there you go.

Don't worry, they will be remembered fondly and lamented about for years should they actually be traded. It will be like they never left. I can't wait.

people talk about the past about signing UFA and how they have not worked out for the Rangers.. how can someone think that Statsny and Phaneuf wont be a bust signing as well. ok they are younger than 30 but what makes you think that they would play well here??

So you either get traded a hero, or you stay long enough to become the villain.
