I'm guessing a Ryan for Kovalchuk trade has been discussed. If that trade did happen it could possibly work out well for the Sens. We could get Kovalchuk playing again and then retain some salary and flip him at the deadline for picks.

That would be an AMAZING trade for the Sens, as Kovalchuk is only owed something like $700k on his actual salary this year, as most of his wage was paid via bonus on July 1st, and he only has one year left on his contract after that for something reasonably-not-awful, like $4mil.

Sadly, I doubt the trade is realistic for exactly those reasons. Maybe LA is planning to pull a Scott Gomez scenario when Montreal told him they were benching him to buy him out? Or maybe, since most of his salary has already been paid, they're hoping he asks for his outright release if he thinks he can make a nice paycheque in Russia for the 2nd half of the season?

All I know is that trading Kovy for Ryan doesn't make any sense for the Kings.

This reads like "my Ferrari is in the garage for repairs, it's time to buy a Lada".
Whether you drive a Ferrari or a Civic, everybody needs a rental while their commuter is in the shop...

devils advocate, Pens often go after a good bottom 6 center for a playoff drive, this kills two birds with one stone.

Pittsburgh might have to get by with taking public transit until their Ferrari is back.

No way does Pittsburgh take this trade. Pettersson has been a very good player for them and this deal would see them adding like 3mil in cap.

I don't watch enough of the Pens to have a fleshed out opinion of Pettersson, but he doesn't seem to be an ideal target for us with Chabot, Brannstrom, and Wolanin on our left side going forward.

I'd rather go for a pure futures deal wrt trading Tierney, as I don't think he will command a return for a prospect that is better than what we already have, where is with a pick, it's a role of the dice, but the potential is typically greater.

In terms of value though, Boro and Tierney packaged together should get a decent return; they are both the kind of depth players a playoff contender could want to add for a playoff push.

My rational is to get someone who can play at the NHL level, allowing Brannstrom to move down to the AHL, where he can develop at his own pace and where we desperately need help on the blueline.

I don't see the Leafs giving up that easily on Korshkov. He's off to a nice start with the Marlies. I don't know much about Engvall and there's probably a better chance at getting him out of Toronto. I could actually see the Leafs giving up Schmaltz for Anderson and I'd do that. Give Andy a shot with a playoff team and get a good RD for Belleville. I'd even retain on Anderson and try to grab a 3rd or 4th round pick out of the Laffs.

That second one is pretty bad.

Both Davidsson and Balcers have done more at the professional level than Gauthier has and all three players are the same age. And then we just give them Anderson and take a cap dump?

No thanks.

I disagree that Balcers & Davidsson have done more at the NHL level, Davidson has played 2 games with 1 assist in Ottawa & 8 games in Belleville. Balcers has been injured all yr but does have slightly more AHL/NHL experience, but is he a long term solution in Ottawa? Not for me, Gauthier IMO brings a more complete & compete game than Balcers does, I'm not very high on Balcers at all.

And in all honestly I doubt Carolina would give Gauthier up for that package, I don't think both Davidsson & Balcers are worth Gauthier, but they could use a little goaltending help if they make the playoffs. Gauthier has also not gotten the same opportunity in the NHL because Carolina is so much better than Ottawa as they proved the other night while Ottawa is looking at a number of their prospects to see who might have a future here. I agree on Shmaltz at RD though.

Isn't that what people said about Nick Paul & Logan Brown?

No.

Bit of a strange comparison in the case of Nick Paul as well since Paul has outscored Gauthier at pretty much every level (not in the NHL yet, but he keeps up his play and he'll be there before the deadline).

Gauthier was drafted with the expectation he'd be a safe bottom-six player, not sure why it's so egregious to call him that now when he's yet to top 18 points (AHL or NHL) in his 5 years since turning pro.

I know that just as well as you, but someone who hasn't topped 18 points in 5 years as a pro (including the AHL level) kind of "is what he is" at some point. Can Gauthier be an effective 4th liner and PK'er at the NHL level? Of course, you can argue he already has. Can he take some jump and become more than "just a 4th line player"? History would indicate that, no he can't.

I just fail to see what Freddy Goat would bring to this team that we don't already have honestly.
