Letang for that money is crazy - a real team player too, Crosby took a 15 percent discount to stay there. 8M...nuts. Pittsburgh should play hardball and let him sit out if he's not happy with 6.5M. Letang is probably the 10th or so best D in the league. Chara, Keith, Subban, Weber, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Karlsson are all clearly better overall players. Suter, Kronwall, Seabrook, Voynov are maybe better too. Letang probably gets 7M as a UFA. So if he wants the cash, it won't be with the Pens.

Because trading him wouldn't be more beneficial :help:

Oilers need immediate help, but if they wait an extra season (2014) to pencil Monahan or Lindholm into the line-up, they may get a no.2 C for about a 2M cap hit for 3 years, with...awesome cap management. Even if our pick has a great camp, I would give them another year in SEL or CHL. I have seen Monahan play about a dozen times live. He is being underrated by stats nerds. 2nd line C along the lines of Arnott or Linden (both of whom spent the majority of their careers as no.1 Cs, including on very good teams).

I'm all for trading the 7th as part of a package for immediate help.

This is the kind of trade we should be modelling:

Jordan Staal

for

Brandon Sutter
8th Overall
Dumoulin

Similar package IMO, give or take:

MPS
7th Overall
Marincin

If that package can net you an NHL roster player along the value of Jordan Staal, I think you make that trade all day.

So who's this year's Jordan Staal?

I wonder if that package could get us one of the Joes? Pavelski or Thornton?

Defenseman route could maybe get us Marc Staal + Pick from NYR? Does that package net you Yandle or Edler? I could be dreaming, but I think all those players I've mentioned can be categorized close to, if not in, the Jordan Staal region of value.

Neither are getting bought out. Rumor has it that only Belanger "might" be bought out.

No word on completed trades.

If I'm MacT, I'm giving Smyth a chance to retire before embarrassing him with a buy out. I'd let him know it was coming and put the ball in his court. But I definitely don't feel he should be on this club next season. He's obviously done.

Horcoff: Well, it sounds like they're letting him talk to other teams. Trying to get a trade done. Don't know how successful that will be without EDM taking on a huge chunk of his salary though.

I don't think the offers will pour in if he's looking for close to 8M. I also get why he's looking for that money - see Brian Campbell. He won't get it in Pitt and even if he were a UFA, might get that money from 3 or so teams - not good teams either. What would Pitt get in a trade? A similarly overpaid d-man, pick and depth player? Pitt is the kind of team that could afford to use leverage to bring the price point down. You don't need to immediately go the trade route. If the Pens could pawn Letang off on Calgary for Giordano, no.22 and Glencross, then by all means, trade Letang yesterday.

People on twitter saying Bob McKenzie on NHL Network said that Gagner wants an NTC and he may get moved if a deal can't get done.

It seems like the only players we acquire are scrubs or draft picks
It would be pretty nice to acquire a decent player for a change...

Hey Jimmi Jenkins want to feed me a narrative on how Letang is worth 7M+ playing #3D ES minutes out in Pittsburgh?

He plays tons of special team as well and is almost always on the ice. Simply put he's a gifted defenseman that every team in the NHL would love to have. 8 million just makes that untenable for many them.

Would be so damn cool if we could land Lecavier. THEN we could buy out Horcoff and sleep very comfortably at night.
