Montreal used to give Boston fits. They had no size. Offense wins.

And Boston has been to two Stanley Cup championships in four years and won one of them. Montreal, meanwhile hasn't won a Cup in over 20 years.

The St. Louis Blues, just one of the many teams in the West head and shoulders above the Rangers on every level, just added an elite goaltender and even MORE size and grit to what they already had. Now, imagine what Anaheim, LA, San Jose, Chicago in the West and Boston and Pittsburgh will do to improve. Yet, 38 year old microscopic St. Louis (minus the picks, and prospects, and depth players it would cost us) is going to magically get us a Cup? Maybe some parent confuses him for an infant and buys him a Lego Movie cup from McDonalds...that cup?

Do you know what the best thing about St. Louis, Anaheim, LA, San Jose and Chicago is? The Rangers would only have to play one of them, after they beat each other up for a while.

The Rangers lack reliable center depth (and certainly any elite centers), consistent scoring and defensive depth beyond the six guys dressing right now. If we lose Cally, we don't just lose heart and soul - we lose our best forechecker and a checking machine. Adding MSL adds scoring but not size on the wing. You think we'll do well against Boston in the East and, as an example, St Louis, should we get that far? (We won't).

In a playoff series, let alone several hypothetical rounds, I don't think that team would be "very dangerous". And whatever we'd likely have to add to sweeten the pot to get MSL would further deplete what little prospect depth we have for the future.

This is probably the best point here ... but it all comes down to Cally .. if he is stuck on his 7M/7Y ... with how hard he plays ... that is extremely scary. And you have to get SOMETHING rather than let him walk. I don't want to lose him ... TRUST ME. But if you know for sure he's a goner, you must improve your team by moving him.

And we would have to play both Boston and Pittsburgh before facing one of those Western teams.

We are not winning the Cup in 2014. It's just not happening.

Can I ask what makes you think we are so far off from these teams? We have been one of the better teams in the NHL recently.

Yes, because having to play both Boston and Pittsburgh is a certainty...... And I'm not being sarcastic.... at all.....

Forechecking is more than one player. It's a team thing and Callahan isn't 6 players. I think the Rangers have an opportunity to really change the complexion offensively by dealing him. I'm just not sure how.

neither are at least 7 of the 8 teams you listed, and I think both boston and Pitt are beatable. Or at least close enough to beatable that I wouldn't mind a MSL move.

Cool.

Not going to spend time explaining to you the deficiencies that exist between Pittsburgh, Boston, and NY because you already have your mind up.....be a boston fan.

I'm not saying 2 wins is a big sample because its not, but the Rangers have beat the best team in the west twice this season.. That's not a guarantee we can beat them in a 7 game series, but we can damn sure compete with them (as we have already proven) and adding MSL we would REALLY compete with them IMO.

C'mon, Fleury is a guaranteed lock in the playoffs, and the Pens always put their best foot forward defensively in the playoffs.

Justin Bieber told me to never say never:sarcasm:

No but seriously, we've beaten the Penguins this year and matched up well with them. Any given game, who knows? We have the better goalie than both of those terms and probably the better overall defense.

I guess Chicago, that we beat twice, is "one of the many teams in the West head and shoulders above the Rangers on every level"?

The West is the last thing the Rangers have to worry about right now. If they get to that point, I think everyone in this forum will be very, very happy.

2 wins isn't a large sample size, but either is a 7 game series. And the playoffs has lots of those in them.

You explained them earlier, and I wasn't really impressed by anything of them. I think people certain that Fleury will flop in the playoffs may be unpleasantly surprised. I shudder to think of Crosby/Malkin/Sutter matched up against our centers, anyway.

You seriously believe either of them will be eliminated by the second round? If we get that far, that's where we face Pittsburgh. You REALLY believe we, even if we add St. Louis, can beat Crosby, Malkin, Neil, Kunitz, so on, in a 7 game series?

And we won the second one with our back up goalie and leading scorer out

A much worse Islanders team took them to 7 games last year..
