Im beginning to get the feeling that the Rangers will hold onto both of them and will lose one or both of them come summer.

Why? Because nothing has happened 48 hours the closing ceremony? We need to have patience. No deals have happened (ie Vanek, Moulson).

No, because teams aren't willing to give up the pieces necessary to acquire either of them. Lets not forget that money has to come back the Rangers way for some of these proposed deals to work and that means roster players.

whoa whoa, Im not saying that. More extremes and absolutes.

Im saying that Ive read other posts of yours where (I could be mistaking you with someone else) you've stated that you think a full rebuild, where they try to stockpile picks and net a few top 10 picks over the course is the way to go forward with this organization as currently constituted.

And look I'd be on board with that if the situation dictated that was the best course of action. It's not right now. But if I am wrong about your overall philosophy on it, I apologize

Definitely wasn't me. I don't believe a full rebuild or any rebuild is necessary. But trading a bunch of pieces for 38 year old St. Louis isn't the direction they should be going in, either.

Trading Callahan and Girardi for young pieces to sustain long-term success is a direction they should be going in.

St. Louis doesn't make this a Stanley Cup contending team.

They can add young pieces, and continue moving forward toward building a team that IS a contender. There is no quick fix.

The Islanders are out of the playoff picture, he has to be traded. Callahan could end up staying if the return isn't what Sather's looking for. He still has a lot of value in the playoffs.

At this point, I kind of want to see Cally traded, hit free agency, then have to settle for way less than his asking price, like 5 for 5 in some non hockey market with little chance at playoff success.. Less than Sather seemed willing to pay for an extension. :yo:

A discount?

That might not be very far from the truth. Didn't EDM offer Clarkson over $6M per last offseason? Some desperate team is going to throw a metric **** ton of money at Callahan. He has every right to go to UFA and pursue every last dime he can get. It's nice to see players (like McD) give a true hometown discount because they want to build something here, but for some guys it's just business. Callahan is the latter.

And my feeling is that if squeezing every last dime is worth playing in a situation with little chance of playoff success for the rest of his career to Callahan, then good riddance.

why is everyone willing to trade Cally for another UFA in Stewart straight up? In that case I would rather hold onto dally for the playoffs, and make a move for Stewart in the offseason.

Burke & Calgary can & probably would throw a boat load of FRN's at Cally.

Truculance is at a premium in the UFA market ya know.

I don't disagree at all, but with some of the rhetoric his agent has been floating, I could definitely see him (try to) sell Callahan on a place like EDM or BUF, with so much young talent. Oh, and you get a blank check from now until eternity.

Let's also not forget that, as his agent, Bartlett gets a % of Callahan's next contract, so of course he's going to want him to go UFA and milk some dumbass team for all they're worth.

Don't get me wrong, I like Cally, but he is not worth $7M or $1.7M/season less than Crosby... It's a joke! $4M-$4.5M is more than fair. If he is stuck on $6M-$7M, trade the **** out of him.

Yup. The players who go after every last dime they can get more often than not end up being villanized by the franchise that gives it to them until management finds a way to get the player off the books. If he wants to be one of those guys instead of taking the overpayment Sather already offered and taking a shot at being a New York legend, that's his right, but I think that's insane. Easy to say from my computer though, and without millions of potential income on the line.

Just looked through Cap Geek for the hell of it. Every single forward that has a cap hit at or above $7 million has hit the 30 goal mark at least once in their career. Callahan's career high is 29 in 11-12 where he played 76 games. He also played at a 30+ goal pace in 10-11 but only played in 60 games where he scored 23.
