McDonagh should be the new Captain. Clearly the best skater on the roster (Henrik is the best player), and he is locked in long term.

Staal? The guy can't stay healthy to save his life. His contract is up summer 2015. Nash is not fit to lead.

I was under the assumption that he wouldn't take a discount to play with the Rangers. I swear i read something about how homegrown players wouldn't take a discount because they witnessed Sather blow it on overhyped talent in the UFA pool.

It appears from some reports that what he's asking for now is the discount. Callahans insane. It's kind of sad seeing one of my favorite players demand such overpayment. Whatever we don't need Chris Drury round 2

I may stop watching this team if they ship Dan G for MSL.

I'm not saying he's not a tremendous talent but for ****s sake!!! He's 38 and Danny is a minute eater and damn solid.

Plz sign G and if we can't get MSL fine. If we trade G it better be for a longer term piece.

Bartlett was quoted earlier today saying that the reported numbers (somewhere around $6.75-6.85MM x 7 years) represented a hometown discount and that he would do better than that on the open market.

hes such a clown.. how does a guy that never put up more then 54pts and not even a 30g scorer ask for such a ridiculous amount of money..

clarkson at least hit 30 goals

and rangers paid dudes that at least were all-star caliber players.. and then came here and **** the bed..

trade callahan... "oh but my heart is here at MSG" yeah get lost buddy.. if heart was here 5x6m is more then fair.. in fact its still an overpayment.. not a leader in my eyes see ya pal..

Very happy too see danny G sign long term and get the C.. if not McD for sure, dude reminds me so much of Scott Niedermeyer.. hopefully he can get that offense going more and more

I would rather take St Louis than Girardi. We have prospects coming up. I expect Allen or McIlrath to be able to at least hold their own and have McD cover up their mistake (which is kind of what Girardi does now). If you can get a 80-90 point scoring forward for Dan Girardi you do it. Even if MSL has a sudden unexpected drop off, he would still be good for 60-70 points and would likely resign 1 year at a time (similar to Selanne). If we could essentially acquire our own Selanne, it would be huge for the team. MSL helps us more than Girardi. Our bigger problem over the past decade has been scoring not defending. It's not like we are trading McDonagh or Staal for MSL, no reason to stop watching this team over the departure of Dan Girardi.

McDonagh is a quiet guy.

He's not a leader. There's a reason he hasn't worn an A

McD is only in fourth season. That's the reason he doesn't have an A. Too many guys ahead of him.

Exit Cally, Girardi, and Richards and he gets an A with Staal and Nash.

"Is the answer Jesus?" <-- Slapshot reference.

It certainly isn't Staal or Nash. One guy can't stay on the ice, the other doesn't have what it takes to lead a winning team.

You have it wrong. Being captain doesn't have to mean you're the best player or skater or are there the longest.

Everything is still real quiet on the trade front. Today really produced nothing but more of the same. If tomorrow is equally as quiet there will be some big decisions to be made for Thursday's game.

None of that explains why you'd rather trade Girardi. You say Girardi is replaceable, Callahan is even more replaceable.

Bartlett was quoted earlier today saying that the reported numbers (somewhere around $6.75-6.85MM x 7 years) represented a hometown discount and that he would do better than that on the open market.

He obviously knows he can get a better deal then that on the open market. It's very possible a team told Bartlett they would pay Callahan what he wants but not trade for him. That is the risk the Rangers took when opening up Callahan and his agent to talks with other teams.

I'm in Florida right now. I had a Lightning fan tell me he heard it's Staal Callahan and a prospect for Salo and St Louis and a pick.

This is not a rumor. This is a fan speculating on what he heard the deal could be. It's not a verified source, I literally talked to the guy for a half hour at the Yankee spring training game today. I'll say this about the guy, he knew what he was talking about concerning the Lightning. The fan also reasoned that Yzerman can live with losing St Louis with one year left on his contract if he was getting back a player like Staal with one year left on his contract. The Salo and Callahan contracts both expire after this season.

Again, this is not a rumor. This was what a random stranger passed along to me. The guy could own the Lightning or be a garbage man. I have no idea if his info is legit or if he made up the rumor. I would not like the trade.....

From a Rangers perspective i'm not sure they would want to bring in another righthanded defenseman if Girardi is still on the roster. I also don't think Salo would replace Girardi's minutes if Girardi is moved in another deal.

Really, I can't wait until the trade deadline is over....

McDonagh would be the long term answer. Stepan another candidate.

Staal may not be here beyond next season, Richards is getting bought out (if Sather isn't demented enough to keep him), Girardi may get traded as well.

The lack of foresight with this club is frightening.

OK...lets name Richards captain, he gets bought out, then it goes to Staal, who gets traded or leaves as a UFA in 2015. Then it goes to? McDonagh.

Or, give it to McDonagh now, who does EVERYTHING on the ice for this club, guy who is locked in for the long term.

Stability and longevity aren't part of the criteria? Yes they are.

John Vogl â€Â@BuffNewsVogl 1m
Sabres GM Tim Murray on goalie Ryan Miller: "Our goal right now, I think on both sides, is to pursue a proper trade."

Is that a team official responding directly in the press to trade rumors?

I do believe it is

Who is John Vogl?

Ironically enough another press member said they were working on a deal.

Bet both stories are true, Buffalo tried one last ditch attempt to see if he would re-sign (elite goaltending is hard to come by, and Miller has been winning since Nolan took over)... Buffalo saw it wasn't a possibility, and then they moved on.

Man probably the most interesting thing on this front all day.

Hmmmph. Salo is a right shot.

Maybe the Rangers do this if they think Staal ends up in Carolina. Basically it's a trade for MSL and giving up two players they know are eventually leaving NYR.

I think McD would make a fine captain.

There are a lot of guys who aren't extremely vocal. He leads on the ice. As he gets older and matures more (he's already well beyond his years) he'll learn to handle it even better.

Well, little doubt how the story is progressing LOL, as its inched along from Boomer to Brooks to waiting for Wednesday when it 99.9 % sure seems like it finally goes down.

Marty St Louis has issued his feelings, discreetly, via a distant friend ("he'd like to be traded" haha), but blared all over Canada nonetheless.
Callahan's agent came out today & tried to put a nice spin on things, but the NYR rebuttal (thru Dreger, obviously) this evening shows Bartlett was speaking out his butt when he talked of keeping the lines of communication open. They're closed. As in permanently.
That the NYR point Dreger to spin that many teams are interested either stokes the fires (if its a destination other than TB) or just buys a bit more time (if it is Cally-Marty) for an announcement.

Either way, Callahan's already an ex-Ranger, just doesnt know where he's headed yet. Impossible to imagine him suiting up for this team Thursday night after something like that, imminent deal or not. Or maybe he does know where he's headed and Bartlett is already knee-deep in talks with his new team This we dont know.

I'd seriously doubt at this point we even hear from StevieY.
There's nothing for him to say and the window to angrily shoot down rampant rumours is just about closed.
And that's if Callahan even becomes a member of the Lightning.
At this point, we likely wont get an indication until its just about to happen. I'd guess tomorrow, but it could become obvious in tonight's (tomorrow's) papers or a simple tweet from anywhere/anytime.

But - for those who hotly debated it - and Im no pom-pom waver for Boomer Esiason - but everything has proceeded almost perfectly along a timeline which was obvious enough once Boomer broke the news;
put it out there, 3-4 days & done.

Certainly didn't keep him from being a captain while he was at Wisconsin. Love the stigma that you have to be a mouth in order to be a leader.

If it came down to a 'rah rah' guy who can't back it up, or a quiet guy who will put the team on his back and carry them out on the ice...i take the latter.

McDonagh is 100% the guy IMO. He took the discount, he signed long-term, he does everything he possibly can on the ice. Leads by example.

Gretzsky was never a vocal leader in the clubhouse either. Then again, he never got to wear the "A".
