Callahan plus a prospect? Not all the prospects can make the team. Rangers are considering re-signing Girardi and possibly Stralman too. Then there's Staal. Where do Skjei and McIlrath fit? Do they fit? Maybe its a forward. Kristo?

I know there are the recent rumors that the rangers are unwilling to send a prospect the other way....but if it came down to it, who knows.

Man, you're really going down a slippery slope when you start tacking on assets for a deal for a guy that will be 39 years old in June.

I agree BRB. Its a risk. Just discussing. Because at this point, you just dont know what is going to end up cutting it no matter where Callahan is dealt.

All good points.

So one must wonder why Tampa Bay would be willing to trade him for a Callahan rental over something as trivial as an Olympic snub.

It doesnt add up. If St. Louis says he'll only go to the Rangers, yet the Rangers won't cough up anything but Callahan, Yzerman will tell him too bad.

I think you look at the key to this being Stamkos.

He's up in 2 years. He'll be 26. The key to their future plan will be Stamkos. What do they have to sell Stamkos?

MSL will be 40 by the time he's up for an extension, and he may retire, or only be willing to do 1 yr contracts until his body and mind are ok with him retiring. The word future and MSL no longer hold much substance past the phrase "immediate future".

MSL is a huge part to TBs success. They have good prospects coming up, but will any be enough to sway Stamkos in a way to resign (besides Drouin)?

Additionally, Stamkos's actions don't scream like he wants to remain loyal to that franchise. He elected to structure his contract so that he could be a UFA as soon as possible.

So to me, the MSL trade has resonate in a way to try and retain Stamkos.

If TB resigns Cally longterm, it may affect SS's decision to resign. I think losing Stamkos will be absolutely detrimental to that club. Resigning Cally after trading for him reaffirms that they're in it to win soon too.

who still plays like he's 30

Oh great! So hes got like 8-10 years left! Lets do it!

C'mon, the notion that St. Louis has 2,3,4 years of elite level play left is a reach. Nobody knows. Im not willing to start chucking in assets to find out.

I know I complain about Sather's lack of long term planning, but that would really be a move that harkens back to the bad ol' days of the Rangers

I think the beauty of trading for MSL is that it offers future flexibility. That, in essence, has future foresight attached to it. It helps.

Probably because we aren't judgmental *******s who condemn someone without knowing the full story. Just a thought.

People do that all the time here, are you kidding? Do you remember when McDonagh was getting a ton of hate because he didn't sign and leave college right away? Or when everyone here was ready to get rid of Stepan because he held out?

Anyway, it's a legitimate point I think, and the TBL writer on NHLN brought it up too. It'd be out of character for sure for MSL to quit on his team and try and bail, but it's surprising no one has a problem with it on here, like they did with Heatley, for example.

there's also no reason to say he cant contribute 3-4 more years.. and it would depend on the prospect/pick for me to say yes.

What a tangled web.

Stamkos is more likely to sign with Tampa Bay because they sign Callahan? Sheesh.

I didn't say that. Just that it could help. It shows commitment to win soon rather than sell MSL for the best available prospects.

Since we're all on hold until real news comes out and people are offering completely farfetched interpretations of what's going on behind the scenes, I'll contribute mine:

I think that a month ago MSL was indeed upset about his snub and, in a fit of pique, did suggest that perhaps TB should trade him, preferably closer to home. The Rangers, getting wind of it, called to suggest a Callahan-MSL deal with a conditional first. At this point, the story was leaked to Boomer (who admits he's been sitting on it for a month). Stevie Y countered asking for Callahan plus Fast, Lindberg, Duclair, Buchnevich, Skapski and the Rangers' 1st next year. Sather, not recognizing any of those names, was in the process of calling Stevie back to accept when Gorton and Clark broke his door down and wrestled him away from the phone. None of the reporters who are currently trying to get more information are able to garner any recent updates, because Stevie Y believes he has an offer on the table and is waiting to hear back... and Sather is currently being held under guard by Beukeboom in a spare freezer on the 3rd level of MSG.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

Well, all I know is that trading Callahan and Girardi could either end up being huge moves that set the Rangers up well for years or they can backfire and be blunders. The ball is in Sather's court.

he could also in the end cave and sign both.

I liken this comment to something that Pepper would have made in Dodgeball.

"Well cotton, the blindfold will certainly make it hard for him to see."

Honestly even if boomer is wrong, I think Sather has to trade Callahan for the best player in a 1 for 1 swap. Picks/prospects would be nice but lets win a cup with an elite Hank please
