That's probably because playing on the PK isn't actually that linked with being a great defensive player, at least for forwards. Kyle Connor has been an adequate PKer in his career.

But PLD has no other argument for getting the Selke, so the fact that he also doesn't get a boost from playing on the PK.

While I think there’s lots of good defensive players who don’t PK much and some not great ones who do, I feel like if a forward is deemed to have had the best defensive season, he almost certainly should be PKing regularly (and succeeding). There’s certainly a difference between the defensive acumen of playing at 5v5 vs on the PK and some good PK forwards aren’t good defensively 5v5, but the best in the league should be doing both.

Funny how people always complain about the Selke being a reputation award, considering some of the responses and reactions in this thread.

I guess fans are no better than the voters.

I would argue that it should be. The PK is almost entirely a defensive effort. Getting takeaways, blocking shots, winning board battles, - it all adds up to PK% and goal prevention which is basically the definition of defense.

It’s half of defense, the other half of getting the puck out of your zone is negated by the fact that you can blindly hammer it around the boards or flip it out with no icings.

Polak was great on the PK because he was allowed to ice it, he was a disaster at ES because he would get hemmed in for 2 minutes at a time because he would ice it every time he won a board battle. That or a guy like Grabner being a PK staple for his breakaways when no one would consider him a defensive player in any other context.

Not saying it's right or wrong (assume that's aimed in my direction) just if you have 2 equals yet one of them have been doing it for years. Most people when forced to choose, will pick the one that is proven.

It's the same attitude vets give rookies, no matter how good you are; still got to earn it.
