You should have no worries there as he's not even a 3rd liner really and is 30 years old. So its def not him.

No AO, Erat, Martin, Ott, Neil, Clarkson, Vanek, Moulson, Marchand, Lucic, Gaborik, Simmonds.

No one on the Pens, Boston, Devils, Islanders, Philly.

Is a forward that plays in the east under 30 years old not signed long term for big bucks and is a potential first line play that would be considered an upgrade.

If accurate then Gallagher? Sather Jedi mind trick part deux.

If it was MSL then the Rangers would have to be throwing in a 1st round pick

MSL makes no ****ing sense because Tampa is in a good playoff position and has no reason to trade their best player unless they were getting real good return. Callahan and a 1st isn't really even all that good...Tampa should be looking how to make their team better now so they can have a good shot in the playoffs, not trading their best player for an inferior player and a mid round pick

he said a "few fans" have hit on it during the night, so what was the name said over and over?

Funny you use them as the example to mock me with. If the Rays had the resources to keep the players they develop when they hit their prime, they'd be the ideal team for darn near every other team in professional sports to model themselves after.

I'd love it if the NYR had the system and the longterm strategy in place that the Rays do - especially because we COULD afford to lock up our stars when it gets to that point.

Yzerman is / will be an excellent GM.

none of the names mentioned make any sense for a guy who's quite frankly highly overrated by alot of fans, an impending UFA at 30 years old and looking for top tier money.

for starters.... i am an adult, i dont mock people on message boards. im just pointing out what ive been seeing from the trade callahan side of the argument, which screams to me tampa bay rays: a club willing to develop talent and then trade that talent to continue that cycle. never willing to "go for it" by acquiring MLB talent that will help them get over the hump. if you can get an elite scoring threat (with a reasonable 2015 cap hit)for a player that is unwilling to work out a contract, i see no reason why a team like the rangers wouldnt do that. you dont trade for rick nash and sign hank to a large contract so that you can trade their captain because you dont want to spend any money. teams like that finish in 3rd place behind the yankees and the red sox every year.

We play with a salary cap in this league. If there wasn't one, keeping Callahan would obviously happen. However, signing someone of his caliber to a star level contract, are not only the types of things that cripples teams, but have crippled this team SPECIFICALLY in recent history.

You cannot compare baseball expenditures to hockey ones. It's insane.

Assuming the cap is 70 million next year and Callahan gets less then his asking price (6 million cap hit) that's 8.5% of our allotted space.

Let that sink in and then tell me if you think he's worth it. Let me remind you, we already have 2 players under contract who will cover over 23% of our cap alone next season.

Let's play the MSL game. his contract is through next season correct? does anyone know who the notable free agents project to be next year? just curious as if there actually is a plan in place! fun to speculate though.

8:04AM:

It is not Clarkson or Chris Neil
It is not Brad Marchand
It is not Wayne Simmonds
It is not Vanek or Gaborik
He thinks the deal would be made sooner rather than later

im not advocating signing callahan. i think his demands for his style of play are ludicrous. that being said, i dont want to give him away for some prospect that may or may not every play for the rangers. when you have a chance to get MSL, it kills two birds with one stone. his cap hit for next year is extremely manageable.

Quick, someone go to boomer's twitter and look at all of his mentions.

I've been scouring it, no one has said anything that could indicate a particular player, or really any I can think of, because all of the tweets about players he has basically shot down.

By the way, an even older round of tweets:

@7BOOMERESIASON Parise and Bylsma take a big hit too. Leadership??!! Where, when? Not helping Cally's trade stock/leverage either.

Boomer Esiason ‏@7BOOMERESIASON 21h
@pux19 That's already a done deal. The only thing that will hurt a trade now is an injury.

It's definitely involving Cally, this tweet says he is a done deal.

And then what? Do you really think this team is a St. Louis from being up there with the Bruins or the Pens?

Fact check, they're not. MSL will play what, maybe 3 more years, 5 max, which would bring him to 43-44.

This team doesn't need to get older. If we're selling one of our best homegrown players in recent memory, it sure as hell better not be for someone who is nearing 40.

Did you miss the dark ages around here or something? This is such a Rangers move it's pathetic.

i was a season ticket holder through the dark ages....but, i give up. lets trade cally for a secondary prospect, because unless im wrong, noone will give up value for a rental. And that is the crux of my argument: I am more than willing to give up Cally for VALUE, not someone's second tier prospects or high maintenance NHL players.

Wouldn't be a defenseman based on what Boomer tweeted. MSL makes by far the most sense given what he said (and the independent rumors others have posted here).

If MSL straight up for Cally is the deal, I'll be so pissed. This team needs to be building towards a competitive core that can challenge for the cup year after year. Loading up with another undersized winger (as good as he is), who's got maybe another year in the tank after this one, doesn't get that job done. It's another quick fix that IMO puts us just on the outside of contender status for this year, maybe next. Not good enough. (Especially when the USA team just demonstrated for us how well a team built on the wings, but weak down the center and with no offense from the blue line, does when facing a properly constructed team with talent at center and on the point.)

I don't ****ing care how old Slats is, I'VE got plenty of time to invest in seeing that team develop. MSL would be a nice add for this year and would give us a bit of a boost. But we'd still be missing the key foundational players we need, namely a true 1C (first and foremost) and a PMD, preferably on the right side. Could Cally directly fetch one of those players? Maybe not, but if that's the case, collect assets and build towards getting one, or get more picks and take more shots at drafting one. DON'T trade for another wing that's likely only got another year in the tank.

1000x this. There is no denying that MSL would be a huge boost right now.

My problem with the Rangers is it is always about right ****ing now. Just keep kicking the "anything can happen" can down the road. No thought given to team construction.

Same old story.
