No. He won't even accept 6. It will end up being more than 6. With a NMC? 6 x 6.25 with a NMC for a 28 year old who is injured often? That isn't crazy. It is foolish.

Oh, 6.1 or 6.2, excuse me. That really breaks the bank in a league where we start the season with close to 2 million dollars in unused cap anyway...

Not having callahan at 6x 6 vs having callahan at 6 x 6. apparently this is somehow only a difference of 1-2 mil. Someone tell the cap that even if we sign him for 6 mil his cap hit should only be 2 mil going forward.

Who here is actually FOR signing Callahan to a deal at 6 years x ~$6M AAV? I'm curious. I would genuinely like to hear the logic behind supporting what Sather has offered.

Callahan gets a 2 million dollar raise in a sport where the cap goes up every year.

The funny thing is that most would be fine giving him 5 million per. It sums up how crazy the fanbase really is. Six just happens to cross their arbitrary threshold.

The Rangers will never win the Cup now that they don't have that extra million dollars sitting around!!!!
That contract (years and dollars) will prevent them from getting a wing that can score, which is what they really need.

The "oh, only $1 million more than he should be making" argument makes literally no sense.

It comes down to this:

Is a regressing, oft-injured player, who is the captain (and a great one at that), as well as the heart-and-soul of the team, worth a six year deal where he'll get 6 million dollars per?

Seems to me this is a case of the heart vs. the brain and it looks like the majority of us are looking towards the future instead of having loyalty to a player, who apparently doesn't want to be here as much as we thought.

#Rangers and Callahan trying to close the gap on a new 6 yr deal. They continue to exchange proposals today.

We will be paying for what he used to do...what he likely won't be able to do going forward. That's what we've done in the past with other teams UFA why should we do it with our own UFA? Fanbase sentimentality? We have Nash and Zuc already. 18 million for 3 RW is just very poor cap allocation and it does hurt the ability of this team to retain and sign talent in the future for 4-6 years. Callahan isn't worth the money. So what hold the money for once and lose for a year or two.

The fact that this isn't done yet is preposterous, we already offered 6 freaking million which is an overpay

What does that have to do with anything. Just because we have the space why should we spend it? We have to resign Staal & Stepan the season after. If we resign Staal I doubt he will be cheap. Stepan, who knows how he will play next year and what type of contract he gets. We have to resign Zucc. We have to resign Brassard in the off season. All of these players will get raises, significant ones. This isn't about now. It is about the future. It is about paying Callahan what he is worth, not because of a letter on the front of his Jersey or his "intangibles". It is about this team being a business. Nothing else. Resigning him would be a bad business move.

I'd love to sign him for 5 just like everyone else but it ain't happening. You pay him 6 or he walks.

So if you let him walk, you have to use that money somewhere else. You can't just sit on it, that would be an incredible waste of resources. So where do you go?

Where you end up "overpaying" someone not named Callahan who's also aging.

People are out of control, they act like not re-signing gives us an opportunity to make all these low cost, high value signings. They're living in a dream world.
