Who here is actually FOR signing Callahan to a deal at 6 years x ~$6M AAV? I'm curious. I would genuinely like to hear the logic behind supporting what Sather has offered.

If we're going to resign him, I'm fine with those numbers. But I've decided that I don't really want him back even at $5m. More about his role on this team than his value in terms of contract.

#Rangers and Callahan trying to close the gap on a new 6 yr deal. They continue to exchange proposals today.

I'm holding out on a gif of Hart reacting to the snuff film as my reaction to the Callahan re-signing news.

with good teams dealing UFA away like the Ducks did with Penner and Sharks did with Clowe and Murray last year, why has the Rangers not done something like this??

Rangers can get a draft pick for guys like Moore and Boyle..
Rangers have the depth to call up a forward if needed...

don't worry he will return to the guy who scored 29 goals one year and hit everything in sight, played on the PP etc.. right??

Callahan gets a 2 million dollar raise in a sport where the cap goes up every year.

The funny thing is that most would be fine giving him 5 million per. It sums up how crazy the fanbase really is. Six just happens to cross their arbitrary threshold.

The Rangers will never win the Cup now that they don't have that extra million dollars sitting around!!!!

Goes up every year huh?

Just like this year when it went down 6 million?

Good job.

It's not about that 1 million, it's about allocating 6 million and almost 8% or whatever of the cap to a guy who is not a high end player.

There's a major difference between 4.5 and 6 for a 2nd line tweener.

Sides still swapping proposals at 3:30. Another deadline that was nothing more than a ruse. They're going to sign him. :shakehead

Less than 24 hours to the deadline.

My question is how the **** is this not settled yet from the organization's perspective?

Whats the plan here? Negotiate until 2pm tomorrow and then try to pull off some half-assed trade if it doesnt work out?

Its not like this is news. The organization should have set a hard deck for years and $'s long ago. Theres should be nothing to negotiate at this point.

Sather isn't held responsible for anything! He hasn't for the last 14 years. It's ridiculous and us fans are forced to suffer for it. ONE conference appearance in 14 years. ONE.

Enough is enough, Dolan

The cap didn't go down naturally. It was adjusted by the adjusted % of HRR.

That being said, there's a feeling that, with the Canadian dollar hovering around $0.90, the cap might not hit $70m next season.

I'd love to sign him for 5 just like everyone else but it ain't happening. You pay him 6 or he walks.

So if you let him walk, you have to use that money somewhere else. You can't just sit on it, that would be an incredible waste of resources. So where do you go?

FREE AGENCY

Where you end up "overpaying" someone not named Callahan who's also aging.

People are out of control, they act like not re-signing gives us an opportunity to make all these low cost, high value signings. They're living in a dream world.

Well at least you just proved you're a Rangers fan. The notion of not signing Cally and NOT spending his money elsewhere is repugnant to you. You're allergic to having unspent cap space. You might be Glen Sather. Is that you, Glen? You do know that we actually COULD sit on that cap space for a year or so, until something worthwhile comes along, perhaps in NEXT years free agency, and let a kid like Miller or Fasth gain experience filling Cally's spot in the meantime, which wouldn't hurt us at all since we're not actually contenders anyhow? I know... That's just more hive mind BS from a shortsighted, sensationalist know-nothing, right? Your idea that if we don't sign Cally we HAVE TO spend the money elsewhere is much less shortsighted.

Glad some one else agrees with me. Callahan was utilized differently under Tortorella and therefore was a much more effective player. Under AV, not so much. Guys like Kreider and Zucc are utilized better.

I think at this point, it's clear that it is settled and they were just grinding Callahan down as much as possible with the threat of trade. They may have signed him for 7m x 6 if Cally had held his ground.

.

If this is the thinking behind proponents of keeping Callahan then it should confirm everyone else's certainty that this is a bad idea

It will continue to rise as the player% increases.

Fans absolutely lose there **** over half a million dollars in player negotiations but you never hear them complain when Sather is just sitting on 1-2 million in cap space, essentially wasting it.

I just wanna know how it makes any sense at all to trade the captain in the middle of a playoff push. I guess I'm missing something.

It makes sense if you want more playoff pushes.

Hysterical. Allergic to cap space. Explains everything. Not signing Cally and not using his money on another player, just letting a kid get experience in his role, would be a great move and you'd be whole heartedly against it. The idea of having 7M in cap space for a whole season is blasphemy in your mind. God forbid we went into a summer with that much cap space and could make a couple of decent signings or save it until a worthwhile player was available.

If 1 - 2 million is no big deal to you then lets pay Brian Boyle 2.5 million instead of 1.5. We should have paid Dan Girardi 7 million instead of 5.5. We should have given Richards 8.1 million a year. Lets give Brassard an extra 1 million. Zucarello? Pshh. He is too important. Better give him the full 2 million extra.

Then we give Callahan 6.5 million a year because what is 1-2 million right? When you cave over 1-2 million over and over it adds up to a failing team that is cap ****ed.

You're acting like the captain has been a huge reason why we're in the playoff picture. He hasn't.

Also, long-term thinking.
