J. Staal: 27 points in 61 games this year.
31 points in 48 games last year.
25 years old.

D. Stepan: 39 points in 62 games this year.
44 points in 48 games last year.
23 years old.

Both are good defensively.

We are not trading Stepan for Staal.

Miller, Skjei, and a 1st sounds about right. Later first to account for a subpar year this year.

Don't think I do that. It's tough.

Step, Brassard, J Staal is good enough C depth because they fill roles so well.

It's tough. And interesting. Adding size down the middle is enticing. Plus, he's only 25.

Stepan's a solid young player but he leeches off of Nash who completely carries that line offensively. I'll take Stepan's point totals with a grain of salt.

Staal is near elite defensively. He's better the STepan now, but I agree, I would not trade STepan straight up for him.

That also wasn't the question asked. It was who is better at this moment.

Staals overall game is better then Stepan's. Who hasn't done much of anything this year. This may be the "quietest" 50 point season i have ever witnessed.

As many have already said, a big fat thank you to Rick Nash for that and a box of chocolates for Kreider's first half.

seriously, not sure why we would pay Jordan Staal (plus assets) 6M + til 2023, but we don't want Stastny who will likely be only until 2020 at around the same cap hit with no assets required..

Jordan Staal is very very far from a #1 center, I'll even go as far as saying even out of the shadows of Malkin and Crosby he's not even a #2 center right now

Is it unthinkable that Sather might consider a deal involving Zucc + picks for St. Louis ? Essentially trading for a potential crown prince and future prospects while dealing away a player that has 2~ years left on top

5 years, maybe. Today, yup.

D. Stepan
10/11 - 82 GP, 21 G, 24 A - 45 P
11/12 - 82 GP, 17 G, 34 A - 51 P
12/13 - 48 GP (1/2 season), 18 G, 26 A - 44 P
13/14 - 62 GP, 10 G, 29 A - 39 P

J. Staal's first 4 years
81 GP, 29 G, 13 A - 42 P
82 GP, 12 G, 16 A - 28 P
82 GP, 22 G, 27 A - 49 P
82 GP, 21 A, 28 A - 49 P

One could say Stepan is trending upwards in production and in fact could project better than Staal.

We shouldn't be trading Stepan for any center, except obvious upgrades. If we're acquiring a center it should be to create a better one-two punch.

my recurring nightmare is that stepan never really gets appreciably better.

he stays as this 2/3 c guy who has great hands and can make sexy plays once and a while but still always skates in mud and generally doesnt score enough.

would i include him in a deal for a bigger faster centerman ?

you betcha.

There haven't been any rumors that J.Staal is specifically being shopped? I would think the Canes would look to move Ruutu and/or Semin first.

Zuccarello isn't going anywhere.
