Huh. Cool. New things every day.

Either way, I'd argue that Callahan is not deteriorating. Several breaks to outer extremities, not even joints, would not cause a body to break down before even the age of 30! You'd think Ryan Callahan is 38 and not 28 from the way people talk.

His 28 year old bones are no more likely to break than his 24 year old bones when he entered the league. In another 10 years, maybe, but unless he has a brittle bone disease, there's no evidence that he's more likely to sustain an injury due to acute trauma.

Maybe, maybe not .... but he's had enough injuries to label him injury prone. But that has nothing to do with resigning him IMHO.

If Callahan gets anything close to the contract being talked about it would be devastating for this franchise. 6 million for a guy putting up third line numbers will cripple this franchises future. This will be Chris Drury 2.0. I would be willing to trade Callahan for a draft pick and miss the playoffs due to not receiving a player to take his spot then to give him anything near 6 years for 6 million. The short term loss will be much more worth it than the long term 6 year loss.

Callahan getting a 2M raise is going to doom the franchise? Right. Sure.

Move Boyle for whatever you want, plug something cheaper in on the 4th line wing, and boom. There's the money right there.

Callahan isn't even worth what he's getting paid NOW let alone a raise.

It's 2 million per year and we could use that money to re-sign key guys like Zuccarello, Brassard, etc. and then next year, Hagelin, Stepan, Staal...

So yeah, 2 million makes a difference

What's ****ed up is that in 48 hours, Callahan could still be a Ranger AND still not extended, so all of these conversations could continue for another 4 months.

What's everyone's opinions on our other, less discussed guys? D. Moore, Boyle, Carcillo, Pouliot? I want to keep our bottom line intact tbh, loving it, but I'm not to sure on Poo.

I think it's about Sather's lack of negotiating tact. He gives in way too easily and it hurts this team

He has always been this way with UFAs. Is it outdated? Yeah. He is stingy with this RFA's though. To say he gives in too easily though isn't true. Him giving an extra year is hardly meeting Callahans "discount" of 6-7 years at 6.5-7+ million.

that is what im afraid of, sather doing nothing till the NHL entry draft. :help:

We have a new coach and this is the first shot he has at shaping the team going forward. He certainly has input. Does anyone think he has been in awe of Cally's puck skills? This situation is the perfect cover to move on without taking blame. I do not underestimate the clout he has and should have, with the future make up of this squad. We are talking a 6 year contract here. My guess is he wants to move on and Sather should oblige.

I don't think he's in awe of his puck skills, no, but I do think he's the kind of coach who realizes you need players like Callahan in the lineup. AV had Burrows anchoring the RW spot with the Sedin's for years. However, do you want that player at over $6M per year? That's a hard sell.

I was one of the very few who was thrilled with the Carcillo trade and I hope every one else has come around to see how he can be of value to us (hope we keep him). Then it comes between D. Moore and Boyle. Both play important roles. I would prefer to keep both for the 4th line and have one play as a winger full time. Pouliot is a good depth player. Depends on what he wants and do the Rangers foresee Fast or Kristo getting a full time role next year? I think so with Fast. With the way Miller has played over the past two games he looks more ready for the NHL. However, it is still only two games and would like to see him continue this for another 8-10 games. Ideally Miller should be the 3rd line C with Fast on the wing. Keeping both Boyle and Moore would allow for a contingency at C incase of injuries and if Lindberg doesn't play well as an injury call up.

Resign Moore. I'm not a Boyle hater, but I think it's time to try something else. I wouldn't be pissed if he came back though. He's a gamer. Which brings us to Pouliot . I need to see how he shows up in the playoffs before making a decision. Carcillo, meh. He's on good behavior right now. I don't think it lasts long

The question isn't what Ryan Callahan is worth on the market, it's what Ryan Callahan is worth to the New York Rangers. How important is he to the team, for whatever reason.

That's going to be what dictates the contract.

I just don't see anyway in the world the Rangers can get their hands on a true #1 center if they are paying Callahan $6 million a year. That's what this team needs badly. Stepan is a #2 IMO, not a #1. If this team wants to compete, they need that #1 center.

I think Sather is out of touch with reality. How can he justify offering that contract? How can anyone? Apparently the player and his agent puts forth ridiculous demands and Sather is supposed to accept somewhere near that. A good GM is supposed to set the tone and be shrewd.

Well, I guess now free agents know how to negotiate with Sather.

Nathan Gerbe's (first name that I could come up with. Haha) agent: Mr. Sather, my client and I want an 8 year deal worth 60 million dollars.

Sather: that's absurd. That's preposterous. I'm not giving you that.

NGA: Well, we're not budging.

Sather: Neither am I

*Few days go by*

NGA: OK Mr. Sather, my client really wants to play in New York. He's dropped his demand to 7 years, 56 million.

Sather: Okay, NOW we're talking. Geez, I can't believe you wanted 8/60. Are you nuts?

Those players don't get $6 million for 6 years and AV knows that.

Dom Moore has been great. Extend him.

Boyle's an old favorite of mine, but I'm actually in favor of moving him. Moore fills the role better, for cheaper.

I don't want Carcillo. I never did, I never will.

I don't like Pouliot, but if there's not a better option, and he'll accept the same money he has now, he can stay.

I thought Boyle would have a big pricetag, but I'm actually not sure there's that much of a market for guys who almost never score points. Cap's going up, role players will get more of it, but is anyone like Boyle getting big money now who isn't also an enforcer?

D. Moore is an obvious call to stay for me and Carcillo probably is too if he keeps playing like he has so far as a Ranger. One point against Carcillo is that he straight up doesn't PK - if we get rid of Cally and Boyle that might be more of an issue.

Pouliot's in a weird spot, who knows with him. I'd like to see that line stay together.

That's tough to gauge with the Rangers already having a few holes to fill and not much flexibility as is.

Callahan isn't even worth what he's getting paid NOW let alone a raise.

I don't think you will find many here that will agree with that. Some 4th line goons and back up goalies are making 2 million so how can Callahan not be worth what he makes? I think we are going a little overboard on the Callahan bashing.

Carcillo has been terrific.

That's an awful lot of speculation.

Honestly, I don't have any confidence in Sather, but the son of a ***** is the General Manager for the New York Rangers. You don't get that without having SOME idea what you're doing.

Maybe I'm just frustrated with his play as of late? So hard to watch. :banghead:

Saw you post this earlier. Don't agree with it but I understand every one feels differently. I do agree that Sather is a bit out of touch with reality.

Why not? Sather has underachieved for 14 years. If he was anywhere else, he'd be canned and the worst part about it is that this is New York and we have very low patience and low tolerance for mediocrity. One conference championship appearance. ONE. That's so unacceptable yet it's still put up with.

Yes, he's the GM for the Rangers...he still is. The reason? Well, two reasons: 1) James Dolan's apathy 2) Sather has a hell of a legacy in the NHL.

#2 is the reason why Sather got the job. #1 is the reason why he's kept it for all these years.
