...moving Hoffman won't be an easy lift for HuGo...two more years at over 4 mill for his one-dimensional diminishing play is a hard sell for anyone...
Debatable...he fits in really well in an established team just looking for a goal scorer. Where the holes in his game won't be as obvious as they are on a bottom feeder.

4.5M for another 2 years for a guy whose routinely scored 25+ goals isn't a hard sell if you ask me.

Especially not if the Habs are amenable to holding salary.

If he can be on pace for 25 he may be able to be moved during the season.

But Hoffman was a UFA that hasn't garnered a ton of interest the past two offseasons. And, he didn't score at a 25 goals per 82 games pace last season. So, I think he needs to prove himself. But, unless he falls off of a cliff, like Drouin did, we should be able to move him at some point at least.

Drouin on the other hand, will go for either less than Domi did at last trade deadline, or won't even be traded, if he keeps getting injured and playing like he's been playing.

When you look at those lines… it be nice to dump the 4th line and get a 1st line instead.

Caufield / Suzuki as a 2nd line would be perfect.
Drouin / Dvorak / Anderson as a 3rd line would be ok.

That is what is needed to complete with the Avs / TB / etc.

2014-15: 27 goals in 79 games
2015-16: 29 goals in 78 games
2016-17: 26 goals in 74 games
2017-18: 22 goals in 82 games
2018-19: 36 goals in 82 games
2019-20: 29 goals in 69 games
2020-21: 17 goals in 52 games
2021-22: 15 goals in 67 games

He's also top 10 over this same period of time (2014 to present) in power play goals.

He's far from a perfect player, he's kind of a mercenary...but guys like that always find takers. His salary, 4.5M for this year and next, isn't *that* prohibitive.

If the Habs are desperate to move on from Hoffman, I suspect they won't have too much trouble doing it.

Two of Armia, Daddonov, and Hoffman will have to go, and one of T. Pitlick and Pezetta, for your lineup to work.

But we're drafting Wright anyways. And he'll go back to Junior. ;) So, one of the above conditions doesn't have to take place.

I'm not sure about the amount of interest he had in free agency the last 2 offseason...I suspect free agency was a weird time for most free agents the last 2 years, so I wouldn't read too much into that.

As far as his goal scoring last year...no one on the Habs scored last year, so not surprising, he also dealt with a lot of nagging injuries.

I don't think he needs to prove himself, as I posted above...what Mike Hoffman does is very proven and teams know exactly what they're getting with him.

The key stat is 15 goals in 67 games. Plus the 15 turnovers per week. GM's have short memories.

The Habs were the worst team in the NHL last year...again, teams know exactly who Mike Hoffman is.

He scores goals...teams will always want that.

The Habs had 2 players score 20 + goals last year...Hoffman had 15 in 67.

we know at least 1 winger is getting moved this offseason.

I think the likelihood order goes: Anderson, Dadonov (50% retained), Hoffman, Armia, Drouin (50% retained), Byron (50% retained).

Too bad the draft is before the UFA market opens. If Klingberg is gone, that will step up interest.

Petry and Hoffman for 18th?

Petry and Anderson for 18th + Dellandrea?

Claims Dal has been in on Petry for weeks, and that they also want a scorer to replace Radulov, and that they might want to dump Khudobin (in comments).
...dunno about anyone else, but I'd take their 18th for Petry & Hoffman in a microsecond...even if we had to eat Khudobin's hit for a season...

Can't wait for the Petry trade. We will see if there is retention or not. I think there will be and then a bunch of posters will fall in line and say... what a great move by Hughes. Bookmark it.

We are not getting a 1st with 50% on any one of Byron, Drouin, Allen or Dadonov. We are looking at 2nd or 3rd rounders with these types (at best).

1) Petry with retention now to get the max return and help the other team with their cap.

2) 2 from the 3 get traded with retention at the deadline (Byron, Drouin, Dadonov). None of them are getting a 1st at the deadline (50% retention or not). Just let Drouin expire. I don't see any team considering him a playoff solution and giving a 2nd if we retain.

3) Allen does not require retention. His cap hit is low. Even if we retain and trade him next off season, it expires quickly. Personally, I think we extend him.

This is a interesting way to look at it and TBH, while I believe that KH does not want to retain, if this allows him to hit a homerun, this is a no brainer. That being said, this implies that any retention = very, very, very good return.
