Do you think not retaining on Drouin and he just expires is horrible situation? Horrible enough to not take the 18th pick in the Petry trade? I must have said this 10 times now

We are not trading Price's contract with retention. Gallagher could be moved but what about moving him after Petry's contract expires? It's only 2 more years after this year. Why are we in a rush to trade everyone?

Worse case, Petry and Gallagher are retained. Price? 99% doubt we trade him with retention. Who else do you have where you avoid not trading Petry for the 18th pick? Think it through more
I think the return's on retained salary players at the trade deadline are disproportionally higher than any package that we'll get for retaining on Petry for 3 years. Not saying I wouldn't do it for the right offer but doing it would limit us to 2 retained salary transactions for the next 3 trade deadlines.

Hughes was clear at the TDL that we won't retain on Petry and we almost never see players with terms getting retain.

I believe Hughes was referencing to exactly that when he said “we will only trade Petry if its good for the team”.

I'm not afraid of retaining on Petry for 3 years if we get the Stars 18th pick. I believe it's 3 retention spots or none as the rule. I've seen posters say both over the last year. Not 100% sure but it's not 2 spots. That's a new one I have here now

Retain on Petry and then with Dadonov and Byron. Drouin with 50% at the deadline still won't return much so it's nothing to worry about. Then the retention expires and you only have Petry for 2 years to deal with. Who else you retaining on?

Back the the original question
. Does Hughes get more, same, or less with the Petry trade?

I mean just the acquisition of Dadonov is a perfect example that you’d always rather have more slots available. Then there’s gonna be Edmundson in 2024, maybe Hoffman (he sucks so prob not), and who knows what else we might acquire. There’s gonna be lots of movement on this team in the next seasons.

3 slots is more manageable I guess tho.

We don’t want to retain on Petry. We need to save those spots for the trade deadline. Byron, Drouin, Allen & Dadonov will all be traded and we’ll get more if we retain on them.

Byron might never play again.
Allen retained won't make a big difference if retained and goalies rarely get traded atbthe deadline anyway.
Drouin and Dadonov are good condidate for retaining at the deadline.

So if Petry retained gets me a solid return, i don't hesitate because of Byron and Allen.

3 spots is manageable yes. I just find it weird that some are hesitant to retain on Petry while getting the 18th pick. Because why? We want to retain on Bryon, Drouin, and Dadonov at the deadline? For what? 2nd or 3rd rounders?

Not sure what Byron and Dadonov get at the deadline with 50% retention but Drouin? I don't see this turning the needle that much and the 18th pick is a much better return on Petry (with $1.5M retention max).

18th pick is likely a better return than what we got combined for Byron, Dadonov, Byron with retention at the deadline. Saying no cause we are obsessed with deadline moves for pending UFA's is weird to me.

Would we get the 18th pick? Not sure but I'm not retaining on Petry if we don't. So there is that too. However, if it's on the table, we would be dumb to say no cause we want 2nd or 3rd rounders on future pending UFA deadline moves with retention.

Retaining $1m on Petry is nothing in terms of cap, but it handcuffs a team trying to sell off expiring assets the next two seasons. Either Dallas wants Petry at his full cap hit or they don’t want him.

You have to quantify what the return would be from the Stars for Petry with retention. A blanket statement don't show the full picture.

What do we really think we are going to get for Byron, Drouin, and Dadonov with retention at this deadline and does that futures return trump what futures we would get for Petry with retention? Likely not

Who else in the next two years? Gallagher, Eddy, Savard, Hoffman, Anderson? I think we are reaching here if we think we are trading them all with retention in 2 more seasons after this year.

3 retention spots is very manageable. If the Stars call me and offer me a legit grade A or their 18th pick, I'm not going to hang up the phone cause we want retention spots open for others down the road.

Can't wait for the Petry trade. We will see if there is retention or not. I think there will be and then a bunch of posters will fall in line and say... what a great move by Hughes. Bookmark it.

We are not getting a 1st with 50% on any one of Byron, Drouin, Allen or Dadonov. We are looking at 2nd or 3rd rounders with these types (at best).

1) Petry with retention now to get the max return and help the other team with their cap.

2) 2 from the 3 get traded with retention at the deadline (Byron, Drouin, Dadonov). None of them are getting a 1st at the deadline (50% retention or not). Just let Drouin expire. I don't see any team considering him a playoff solution and giving a 2nd if we retain.

3) Allen does not require retention. His cap hit is low. Even if we retain and trade him next off season, it expires quickly. Personally, I think we extend him.

There will be some level of retention on the Petry trade in order to maximize the value. Guys like Byron or Drouin on their last years can be traded and taking back an expiring or a one year remaining bad contract to even out cap implications if needed.

Put me on record as saying Hughes will not eat any salary on the Petry trade. I'd be shocked if he did and really don't think it's necessary. Petry paid appropriately for what he brings and his point production.

Agreed. I can't believe some posters think that it's a bad idea to retain on Petry cause they want to keep the 3 spots open for deadline moves that might return a 2nd or 3rd rounder (at best).

If the Stars asks us to retain $1M on Petry and offer the 18th pick or a grade A prospect. We are not saying no cause we want to retain on Bryon, Drouin, or Dadonov at the deadline.

Some posters are going to say... yeah but we won't get the 18th pick. Think again... A top 4RD who has mobility and can be on the 2nd PP unit is worth a lot. My return package might be low and Hughes gets more. I started low and even added one of our 3rd's.

You're not retaining cause he sucks. You retain to get a better return. You don't handcuff ourselves in maximizing Petry's return cause you need to consider that it's the playoff teams that need Petry the most and most teams don't have the cap space. This is about taking advantage of the Stars situation and offering them cap flexibility options while we get their 18th pick.

Excellent point.

I'm shocked that some don't see it. Wait for it... Hughes will retain a bit ($1M ish) and get a really good return and it might be better than my idea. I started low due to the HF board trade factor nit picking game.

* Petry (retention down to $5M)
* Habs 3rd or 4th rounder
for
* Stars 18th pick.

Yeah I don’t believe there will be any retention either. It’s been reported that there’s up to 5 teams in on him, and Hughes is on the record as saying he won’t retain, while he will only be moved if the deal makes sense for the Habs.

I’m still betting on LA. They inquired last year, and took the Oilers to 7 games without Doughty. Danault has been terrific for them, so maybe they’ll try to catch lightning in a bottle twice? Also the Bargain Bin connection as well, MB would know Petry well and have a pretty good idea of how he would adjust to their system.

Their 1st rounder and Brendan Lemieux (a guy Gorton acquired when he was the GM in New York), for Petry.

Then trade a combination of 18, 26 and Anderson for OTT 1st pick (or better NJ 1st pick).

Then send all the new kids down one more year, suck hard , get a top 5 pick next year, win the lottery.

Wishful thinking sure. :)

But even with the add of an OTT pick this year and a top 5 pick next year, I’d be a good base.

Got to get the deal done with the Stars first and they have cap issues. So yeah, offer retention and they bite. I'm targeting their 18th pick and letting them keep their grade A prospects who are closer to the NHL. That will make them think no doubt. They can't afford $8M+ for Klingberg and then have enough room for Robertson and Oettinger. Reality. Petry at around $5M is a great solution for them. It's a trade that works for the Habs, Stars, and Petry.

Then we have more assets to use to try to trade down into the top 5. However, Stars are exploring their options like Hughes said and so are we. Others might want Petry more so that forces the Stars to make a decision sooner rather than later IMO.

For all we know, it ends up like Patch... A trade done in Aug or September. Petry with retention down to $5M will gain a lot of traffic. Top 4RD's at $5M are not readily available. Hughes will get a very good return for Petry or we keep him. Simple as that.

Retaining on Petry wouldn't be a big deal for a year, but 3 years is hard to predict what we could flip at 2024-2025 deadlines, could be like Toffoli's and Chiarots where we get 1st rounders as well. I trust Hughes to make the good call on this one, something like the 18th overall is very inticing, no doubt. But at the same time its 3 deadlines with 1 less spot to flip assets for picks. I see Edmundson as a chiarot return, Allen, Dvorak and Armia could get us some sweet return in the best scenarios. I think both sides are debatable on the value of retaining for 3 years.. depends who's still there at 18th in this case..

I saw that offer on Capfriendly from a fans from Philly and I would personally do it if it was on the table:

To Philly:
Mike Hoffman
4th round pick

To MTL
James Van Riemsdyk
3rd round pick 2023

No thanks.
JVR has a 7 M contract, so he likely has no value even at 50% retained.
Hoffman at 50% has a 2.25 M cap hit, which should give him value. We can trade him next offseason and get back an asset.

I'd rather take a cap dump back than retain, for the same dollars and term. It keeps retention slots open.

If you're going to use up a retention spot for 3 years why not go to the full 50% (3.125M) to maximize the value then....
You're actually getting less for the retention slot by minimally retaining than we would by using 50% retention at the deadline (I know a 50% retained Drouin will get less than a 1M retained Petry but this ignores the fact that the base assets have different values prior to retention)

Can't see Montreal retaining for 3 years, doesn't happen a lot. Kessel is only one I can think of where there was retention on term.
