There is alot of noise about NJ trading that pick................HuGo would be in on this, but it's futile for us to ague about it.............rarely are posters on HF a good gauge of what it would take to get...................rarely.
We can be interested as much as we want, the reality is that we don’t have the asset to move the needle, so we should move on from the NJ 1st pick speculation It won’t happen

The Habs doesn't have the horses to do that kind of trade and they are not in a position to do it anyway.
If NJ trade that pick is to get a young core player and nothing else. They want to win now.

For me the trade that write itself here it's Chychrun from Arizona going to NJ for that pick

Exactly

Even if they decide they want to trade the pick for immediate help, Josh Anderson is not a key piece that is desirable in exchange for 2nd overall --- lets not kid ourselves here

Comtois, 2nd '23 for Dvorak

Hoffman, Clague, Norlinder for Fabbro, Myers

Petry for Texier, Foudy, 2nd '23

Weber, Drouin for AZ 2nd '24, 3rd '23

Armia, Allen, 2nd '22 for Blackwood, Zacha

Sign Letang 3yrs/21-24M (7-8Mper)
Sign Brassard 2yrs/2M (1Mper)

Zacha - Suzuki - CC
Texier - Wright - Anderson
Comtois - Evans - Gally
Poehling - Brassard - Byron
Foudy, Pezetta

Romanov - Letang
Edmundson - Fabbro
Harris - Savard
Myers

Blackwood
Price/Monty

Still a bubble playoff team, lottery picking if things go poorly, wild card team if things go well. Cap situation far more manageable going fwd (especially if Price retires or LTIR for good)

Byron, Brassard, Savard & Edmundson all deadline trade candidates to add draft capital for '23

10-12 solid young pieces in good development spots (role/ice time) that could grow together & form core of contending team in 3-4 years (bolstered by ghule, Barron, mailloux, Roy, Ylonen, Norlinder, Heineman et)

We can forget Jeff Petry to Dallas

Elliotte Friedman in his podcast just said that Dallas will look to shed money with Robertson/Oettengier/Hintz contract needed to be resign

I don't expect us to move into the top 5, but I would love to see us move the lower first up a bit. After years of trading down and doing quantity over quality, I'd like to have some fun and do the opposite. What teams other than NJ are looking to trade their first?

You sure? You just might be proving my point........once again, futile, we are not behind the scenes.
100 % sure, it’s just being realistic (except if you’re ready to put Cole Caufield in the deal).

It’s not that complicated, which player in our team would you trade out 1st pick OA for if they where in an other team ??

Depends - if Gaudreau hits the market, NJD will without a doubt open the vault to sign their hometown boy. That becomes the W they’re looking to bring out the best in Hirschier, then it’s a question of what they want to add.

Making the playoff beat year seems to be the ownership mandate - would two established players do the trick? Petry + Anderson in some type of package involving 2OA?

I don’t know but there will be lots of moving pieces at play, starting w Johnny hockey situation at top of the list …

Kevin Fiala is a UFA??

If we get Fiala and Wright that's the rebuild right there. Is there any way we can sign him?

I would never trade Guhle. This kid is a throwback and has future captain written all over him. I doubt they have enough of what Jersey wants to make a viable play for number two, but…..

If they really wanted to move up, I think the most realistic target would be through Columbus for their Chicago acquired spot at 6th overall, and I could see it being a blockbuster deal - Columbus needs a veteran center to take some of the pressure off their younger guys. They had a great draft last year with their 3 first round acquisitions and have a ton of cap space while having a respectable year points wise.

I’d offer, for their 6th overall pick:

Christian Dvorak, Logan Mailloux, Calgary 1st round pick.

Dvorak solves their need for a young veteran Center that can produce/take the weight off of the young players while also being signed to a reasonable contract. Mailloux gives them an elite right hand shot defenseman prospect in the pipeline, while the Calgary pick still keeps them owning two first rounders this year.

Habs shed some salary and move a guy who never truly seemed to fit here (while ensuring they’ll be weak for next years monster draft) and moving up to get another elite talent… with my own personal hope that Jiricek would be the guy they snagged.

Coming out of the first round with an elite center and a potential top pair defenseman would be fantastic.

Why would you trade Mailloux "an elite RH shot defenseman prospect" for a "potential top pair defenseman"??

Because this regime didn’t draft him and he’s a year further along in his development (both on and off the ice). Mailloux’s under a lot less media scrutiny in Columbus as well, which will only help him short and long term.
