Totally agreed.
Mailloux fell so hard this year its unbelievable...
This is my list of top 5 D prospects right now for MTL:
1. Reinbacher
2. Engstrom
3. Konyushkov
4. Mailloux
5. Trudeau
Mailloux is barely ahead of Trudeau.
From my observations, Trudeau has passed Mailloux and has passed him at a gallop. It’s obvious in the way that Laval is using Trudeau: on the first power play unit and killing penalties. Trudeau is a more dynamic skater than Mailloux, he’s more physical and he has much better defensive orientation. The only edges that Mailloux has is his passing ( it’s the best in the organization); his shot and offensive vision. In my opinion the only way Mailloux makes any impact at the next level is as a power/ skilled forward.
I have always thought the touted strength/ depth of Montreal’s defensive prospects was largely illusory. You had Hutson, the unproven Engstrom and Reinbacher, the overrated Mailloux, the flawed Trudeau and the unknown Russian.
It would surprising if Trudeau turns out to be the best of the lot after Hutson. But to this writer more surprising things have happened in this grand sport.
