Then what's the context? Do we need to go out and get an Austrian player so that Reinbacher, was it a mistake not get a veteran Slovak player for Slafkovsky? Or is it only Russians that are at risk?

Also wasn't the rumor at the time that Hamrlik was the one who introduced the Kostitsyn's to that stuff?
The context is he’s right, and it’s perfectly normal across the NHL to try and insulate new star players with veterans of a similar background. Been that way for decades.

Anyone who has been following Mailloux closely this year would readily see the considerable holes in his game. In Laval, Mailloux's role has clearly been diminished and he has been passed on Montreal's defensive prospect depth chart by both Trudeau and Engstrom. I would suggest that at this stage he has less market value than Barron and unless he is able to pick up that missing level of speed, his time in the Canadiens' organization will soon becoming to an end.
Sucks to hear but it is what it is. Hopefully he can improve.

Recently on BPM Sports, former Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion confirmed that Kent Hughes hit a home run when he got his hands on Carrier.

He's a good acquisition, qualifying it as a home run though is an exaggeration.

Getting Andersson would be a home run.

Are Laine and Mikko Rantanen good pals?

Maybe Patrik can put in a good word and convince him to sign in Montreal in the summer?

We can even bring back Joelle if that helps.

The full comment was more like "getting Carrier just for Barron was a home run". But Dorion has been very high on Carrier too.

If he ever hit the market, the moose is going to cash in big time. I can see Chicago and Detroit overpaying him to the tune of 14-15m AAV. They are a lot of teams that are starving for offensive firepower. Same thing for Marner and Kaprizov.

Won't get Andersson for Barron either.
Carrier can't be considered a homerun because of the type of player he is....

But after 5 games, 4-1-0 record and Carrier posting 4 points in 5 games, playing solid top 4 minutes defensively.....all that for Barron who has 1pts in 19 games, let's see how Barron look in the coming year, but so far....it is a homerun considering what we gave up for Carrier.

Totally agreed.

Mailloux fell so hard this year its unbelievable...

This is my list of top 5 D prospects right now for MTL:

1. Reinbacher
2. Engstrom
3. Konyushkov
4. Mailloux
5. Trudeau

Mailloux is barely ahead of Trudeau.

What a dumb post. This right here is why we can’t have civilized conversations. You sound like someone that has no scope.

Obviously you want someone you can relate to and speak the same language too when your being integrated into a team.

Calling someone racists for something that has been tried and tested is simply not a good look.

Go look in depth into sociology
So why didn't they do it for Slaf?

Russian people aren’t so different. I suggest you try speaking with a few. Growing up in Canada I had such a twisted opinion of Russians, Serbs, etc. and it was almost entirely due to never interacting with any and absorbing nonsense through the media. Most people are mundane and normal in most ways.

Gainey’s management was downright negligent and old school — hopefully HuGo’s will not be.
I have worked with some Russian players and got to know their families.

This discussion went off the rails as someone took benign hockey dialogue out of context. I'm all about insulating young players and especially a teenager who has never lived outside his home country. Teams in many sports leagues try to give these players who were huge investments a buddy/mentor as they adjust to a new culture and way of life. Many MLB teams have done this with Japanese players. There is no re-inventing the wheel with this concept.

Didn't notice he had this much impact in 5 games. Glad it's paying off. Barron isn't a NHLer so I'm not sure following him further matters much, just like Harris.

There are only so many roster spots. As for a Russian coach or other staff, they wouldn’t be buddies or peers so the intimacy would not really go farther than a certain point.

I don’t want any young player falling astray but hopefully the Gainey-era complacency with managing players has been left behind. With that said, we are hearing some not so good speculation about Slafkovsky… so who knows. I figure it mostly depends on the character of the player and his priorities.

I have faith Demidov wants to be the next superstar. Lord knows we need that.

How come there weren't posts about bringing in a Slovakian mentor so that Slafkovsky has someone that speaks the same language? How come there wasn't a push this summer to bring in a German speaker into Laval so that Reinbacher had someone to relate with?

And for the record I didn't say the other poster was racist or anti-Russian, I said the argument was.

EDIT: And if you go back to the OP, what was said wasn't that young people can use help from a vet, it was we've had trouble in the past with those people. That's what made it racist, we've actually had trouble with players/prospects of all nationanlities, so singling out Russian/Belarusian is problematic.

Been that way for decades is hardly an argument for something not being racist. But to your point yes embedding young players with veterans is a good idea. That veteran doesn't have to have a similar background. If we could trade for Crosby or sign Kuzenetzov as the veteran that takes Demidov in and mentors him, would anyone honestly say it should be Kuzenetzov because he speaks Russian and Crosby doesn't?

We should absolutely have veterans around who will take Demdidov into their home and help them adjust to NA, NHL life. Demidov like Slaf and Reinbacher have good enough English that anyone can do it and so getting someone who also speaks their native tongue is basically irrelevant.

Slaf’s English was very strong, and both his parents English is exceptional. Same Redenbacher. It’s not an anti-Russian issue.

Ovy didn’t need a translator because his mom taught English and he was able to communicate well, Malkin though only knew a few words and Pens needed Gonchar. Panarin barely even knew a few words and Chi needed a full time translator. Radulov had a very difficult time in Nashville not knowing any English despite having played a year in Juniors (Quebec).

Michkov can barely pronounce a few words, Demigod seems light years ahead based on the little snippets… I’ll trust HuGo know better than I
