3 more years? This team is not that far off, definitely not 3 years away. Add Newhook and Dach into the mix, were up there IMO.

UFA's of that nature don't become available very often, in case we do struggle another year or two it's better off having him already.

Agree.

And I think it's unlikely he even gets to UFA.

If Laffs can't sign him, I'd bet they will trade him for a minor something in the post season, before July 1st, to a team that feels confident they can re-sign him with the extra year they can offer.

Will be interesting to see where he wants to go, and if there are many/any other teams with that kind of cap room that he prefers...
Would he be willing to do a ground up situation like Chicago?
Go be the succession plan for Ovie in Washington?

It will be difficult for them to contend within 3 years.
They will need to let that young group of D mature and probably find a true number 1 goalie.
They can make the playoffs though.

That is highly speculative. Dach didn't even play a full season at C for us yet. Did he show potential? yeah, not doubt there, but to say he would have 1-secure a spot a C all season and 2- outplay Suzuki.... that is a stretch.
Saying he wouldn't have been is also speculation.

It's all speculation.

agreed... we just dont know.

And to me that make this season such a waste as we are nowhere closer to really knowing what are the missing piece here. Yeah, we know that CC/Suzuki/Slaf can make a good line, but we have no additional information then that on the rest of the forward. Can RHP play regularly?? Is Newhook a 2nd or 3rd liner?

To be fair a broken wrist and a torn acl are not the type of injuries associated with being fragile . I compare such injuries to what Markov got . And he was a s good as new after he came back
This is pure speculation. Dach has all the attributes to be our best center if he can add fortitude to his resume. Being a complete player includes being able to play games. I want to be able to say Dach is our best center at game 82.

PICKS are great... but where they pick is a big deal. to get the scoring they need. I know ... but love to see the habs get a sniper.

You can always trade picks and/or young players for established first line players. Whatever you try to build a contender using picks or trades or free agency you need a good GM to do so.

Vegas got Eichel using in part a 1st and Krebs. They got Stone for Brannstrom. You can't build a contender using picks only. Eventually you have to trade some of those picks or the players you picked with them to fill voids.

But one thing is certain when a team is trading an established first line talent that team will be more often than not rebuilding/retooling and will be looking for picks and young players (more than over the hill vets). It's easier to acquire a Mark Stone using a young player than using a Brandan Gallagher or Josh Anderson or David Savard which is why turning those assets for picks and young players would be ideal.

We just have to get them all.. Like pokemons! If we have all the first round picks, then it doesn't really matter where we pick right?

Doubt they move Bourque he's doing well.

Bourgault is a buy low target 8pts in 19gp, Oilers can't miss the playoffs...Allen retained probably does it.

The point is he isn't our best center now and if he doesn't play lot's of hockey again next year he won't be then either. I'm glad you brought up Markov because he certainly wasn't our best D when he wasn't playing. Which is exactly what I posted. I want to look back after an 82 game season and be able to say Kirby Dach was our best center. Which is what we said about Markov when he was finally able to play regularly.

Memory bias.
Dach did well in the 3 games he gave us in February and in the 4 games he gave us in March.
Never mind the major injuries It's the gaps in the calendar season that are concerning.

Markov wasn't as good as new when he came back. He lost significant foot speed.
