Yzerman did.
Yzerman dog-walked Bergevin, but nobody could’ve predicted Drouin’s physical and mental issues.

I was cagey about the trade when I heard about it and at not point did I feel Drouin was a good match for the Habs but his spectacular failure was not predictable.

He lost Markov and Radulov who were immensely popular. He needed a splash to satisfy the base. Who better than an inegmatic Quebec born “star” player.

It’s those desperate moves GMs make in the heat if the moment that cost them the most. You see it all the time and hope to be on the receiving end and not the giving one!

Position wide, the trade was questionable from the get go. Most teams (at least successful ones) are hesitant in trading away a potential top pairing defenceman.

Dumb always loses.

Drouin was acquired before Markov/Radulov left us. That wasn’t a desperation move. It was one made for political reasons. Tampa was in no position to hose us given the situation they had with the expansion draft.

No reports of that anywhere. Let me guess, fan fiction again...

Drouin was acquire before Bergevin negotiated with Markov and Radulov. The idea was "we are finally win-now, we will add Drouin, Markov, Radulov AND ANOTHER FORWARD and finally try to win."

How wrong we were.

Especially when you don't have one! Very dumb trade.

Woll is potentially out for the season for Toronto, less goalies is good for us, maybe we can get a 6th round pick for one of our guys instead of losing Primeau on waivers

Drouin was acquired days before Radulov and Markov weren't re-signed just before free agency started. I'm pretty confident Bergevin knew they weren't coming back and wanted to make a splash to calm the incoming storm. I don't think he was caught off guard with Radulov and definitely not with Markov who he knew he wasn't re-signing.

Drouin was acquired June 15 2017. Radulov and Markov were lost after July 1st. Their departures had nothing to do with us acquiring Drouin. Those were botched contract negotiations. Bergevin was memed for how he handled contract negotiations that summer. We got the famous “If you want loyalty, buy a dog” lines out of Bergevin that summer over Radulov. He 100% percent thought they were coming back. He low balled them.

The benefit of trading Allen is to clear cap space for the 2025 season and to give more reps to Primeau.

6th round picks are irrelevant.

The Habs can then use that Torontonian cap space to sign Nylander:)

Thank you - the myth of Markov, Radulov departures & Drouin / Alzner additions seems to have no end

Molson stated specifically on Mitch Melnick’s show, the org had a plan in place and $ allocated to sign both Markov & Radulov + acquire Drouin to help “add” to the offense after the inability to generate offense vs NYR in the playoffs.

Alzner was also not signed to be a Markov replacement, but an Emelin replacement who was going to be left unprotected for expansion draft

Who knows, maybe we trade Arber for the 13th pick at the draft, and while waiting for Engstrom, Hutson, and Trudeau, we go the following on the left side in Montreal next year:

Matheson
Guhle
Struble
Harris

While adding a blue chip forward prosect like a Zach Benson, Suzuki, or Caufield...

Baseless anticipated trade extrapolation dept.: Allen once again skipping a start as he is confirmed not to be playing in tomorrow’s away tilt vs Buffalo:

We really wanted his brother, in the end, not Arber, so that makes perfect sense. Getting a 13th OA pick for an undrafted talent like Arber?

What team might he be going to for that 13th OA? Montrealmight end up with that pick as their own.

Montreal trading Jack-eye to themselves would mean getting jack-shit for him...

Preventing injuries as talks heat up about trading Allen? ;)

May be a trickle down from this:

Contrary to popular belief, the NHL has been shrinking goalie equipment for at least the past dozen years. Pads were narrowed, shortened, then shortened again. Both glove and blocker had their total surface area reduced. Jerseys were required to follow the form of the goaltender’s body. The height of the stick’s paddle was trimmed. Pants were narrowed.

The fact league play keeps getting faster w each passing season has contributed says Cpt Obvious

So when posters say Allen is “crap”, would only advise he’s performing at or above league avg.

Moreover, as I’ve posted numerous times, Allen’s career track record shows a borderline elite G, when managed to 36GP or less per season, and he’s renowned for being a great teammate & G mentor.

Buf & Habs make for ideal trade partners on so many fronts

We’ve seen more than enough of Allen as Habs fans to know that he will break down if used as a no. 1. If his playing time is managed, he can be a solid no. 2. Not sure what that’s worth on the trading market.

I have no inside information but it's obvious to me that teams would be willing to trade a 1st rounder for Xhekaj. I'm just not sure how high a 1st or what the "+" would be.

I also think that it would be unwise for Hughes to trade Xhekaj for a 1st in a one for one swap.
