In 2017, when the Habs were massacred by the Rangers in the first round due to Radulov not having help, they actually had an open path to the finals. The Eastern Conference was quite weak that year. Given that the Habs' had an aging team it's too bad that the team didn't add at the deadline.

They added!!

How could you forget Bergevin masterfully acquiring King, Ott and Martinsen?

Not gonna lie I was kind of excited for Martinsen. Big, physical forward, with speed, but that's basically all he could do.

Dwight King f***ing sucked the most sucking of anyone who has ever sucked.

Ott was OK, but yeah, nothing the Habs really needed. Well, maybe Ott being a pest, penalty killer, faceoff guy, but underwhelming

“According to my information yesterday, the Canadian has not received an offer for either [ Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau ]. That doesn't mean general managers aren't calling, but there haven't been any concrete offers so far. » - Pierre LeBrun

Pierre stirred the rumors now

Did he reword what he said yesterday? Because yesterday is sounded very much like "nobody called to asked about their availability", now today is "nobody made a concrete offer yet".

Which is quite different...

Garrioch said earlier in the week that the Kraken contacted Montreal. Just doesn't know if it's for Allen or Primeau. He also said the Sabres have shown interest in Allen.

What would be the point of calling without the intent of making an offer?
Of course numbers 2 and 3 of a threesome are available.
Werent Oilers scouts « chasing » them?

Thing is they might be calling on Montambeault now signed…

Dwight King was an asshole. He wasn't happy he was traded so he did nothing. Useless players can't afford to not show up. He ended up on some team in Siberia after that. Hope he enjoyed the beaches there.

They could be calling to ask what Hughes would need to move Primeau or Allen?

Thats the last year the team was an actual contender. The bozo decided hed sit on his hands.

It hurts even more knowing that just two months after, Schenn was traded for lehtera and 27th overall.

Youre telling me he couldnt have offered his first + for him?

If you look back at who was moved at the 2017 TDL (see article linked) there weren't many impact players available that got moved. Out of all the guys traded who do you think would have most helped us

You can see in the same list that not many first rounders were traded for forwards.

These so-called insiders reporting talks is hardly news.

I think it was Hughes who said when asked about his approach, that he makes it a point to interact with every counterpart regularly. So, GMs “talking” is meaningless.

Now, if the insider names who spoke and about whom, then it may be newsworthy. LeBrun’s “no offers” comment may just be the snapshot he took at a particular juncture and can take a quick turn.

The worst part has to be Twitter sleuths trying to extrapolate interest and a future trade based on how many scouts are attending a game or how senior they might be. Scouts can attend games for a host of reasons and none of them may have anything to do with players that team fans want to get rid of or capitalize on.

I will admit that the league now is trading good players way more frequently compared to back then when Martin Hanzal was the best player available. That being said, Bergevin refused to make trades involving picks/prospects unless they had little to no value. He didn't want to include Poehling in a ROR trade, called Mete an untouchable, he wanted 2 2nds for Tinordi, refused to cash in on Beaulieu, kept Scherbak and Juulsen...etc We lost so much value since all of those players were lost for nothing.

Look where Berg's got you though? First trip to finals in 32 years. You think these two clowns will get us as close to cup? You pipe dreaming if you do. Look at mistakes they made in just two years? The mess Laval is, hanging onto Anderson too long, ridiculous Allen contract. They made way more mistakes than Bergevin did in his first two years.

All Hughes and Co. Needs is a previous regime to set them up with a decent team that just struggled to win close games. - didn't happen

The last truly elite goaltender - didn't happen

Some really good players that they pretty much alienate and trade one, but when they trade that player they ask for Glass and not Suzuki and then settle for Suzuki.

And then be in a weak ass league, beat a good team that's very meh in the playoffs and then an OK team, have momentum and beat Vegas, which really helped when Fleury blows a late, 3rd period lead.

Bergevin was gifted a generational goaltender, a star dman and another #1 dman, an elite goalscorer in a big frame, and one of the best two way players in the game. Hughes has to deal with one of the worst cap situations ever left over thanks to Bergevin with no star talent anywhere.
