Ducks have been sucking even if they have Top-10 picks in 5 consecutive drafts and on their way to pick high again in a 6th year. That's not a rebuild I'm interested in living through.

At some point, your rebuild needs to show progress. Ducks seem to be getting into Sabres territory. Their top picks do great, but the team still sucks.
To be fair they hired Verbeek to be their GM in 2022. I have really his moves so far, they seem to be in better hands now.

what are you talking about? Ducks prospects are no better than the Habs.

They have top-end prospects and we have nothing. Caufield if he can put it together, which appears to not even be guaranteed at this point.

Anaheim could end up in Sabres territory.

Montreal is doing better than Anaheim and I'd rather be the Habs than the Ducks. Even if Habs miss the playoffs, they are showing progress.

Imagine the Canadiens draft Top-10 for 5 consecutive drafts (two of them being Top-3) and in their 6th year, they're still Bottom-3 in the standings. That wouldn't fly around here.

It would fly with me. I want top end talent, not a mid team with a mid top 6 that relies on goaltending and defense. I've already watched that movie and have no interest in seeing the Disney live action remake.

Sabres rebuild failed due to bad management. Maybe the Ducks' will as well. But surrounding talent properly is how you win cups. We don't have the talent to surround. Progress towards mediocrity will just lead us towards being a perpetual bubble team like Detroit.

I imagine Gauthier had a say in where he wanted to go.
For sure, there are contingencies we’re not privy to. Which is why we’re here and not part of their phone calls.

You can also add that the asking might have been way higher from the Habs, who knows.

We’re just venting in a vacuum — let’s just say that a lot of us are tired of seeing the Habs not roster enough of the kind of profile Gauthier presents.

You must really love dmen then.

You must have been pretty upset when we traded Romanov
No. Romanov was nothing special and a risk because he was Russian. Reinbacher, Hutson, Mailloux, Struble etc all can do more than him. I would not trade a defenseman that could be a #1 or #2 defenseman.

Do we know if he will go to Anaheim? Has he signed?
Never mind. He can't sign unless he leaves college. So how does the acquiring team know he will actually sign with them?

Rebuilds take actual time. By the end of this draft, the talent they'll have stocked up will be rather impressive. Meanwhile, our talent pool will be the ? in the underpants gnomes equation.
Rebuilds take time yet you think we are in no-mans land 2 years in. The Ducks had two top 5 picks in the past 5 years while the Habs had 2 in the past 2. People here would bitch and complain that we aren't tanking hard enough since we missed out on a great top 5 in 2020, drafted 9th in the Hughes draft, and then drafted 10th in 2022 if we were in their shoes.

True that Verbeek's vision could be one that will truly help the team progress. But even if it's a new GM, the Ducks have been rebuilding before he got there.

Habs picked 1st in 2022 and 5th in 2023. Imagine them picking Top-10 or higher up until 2027. Even if Hughes leaves and a new GM is hired in the middle of all that, the Habs as an organization will still be in that cycle.

I think acquiring Gauthier is a real good move by Verbeek. But this whole "this is how you do a rebuild" talk about the Ducks is one I disagree with.

This is a case where Habs were in a position to overpay. Swapping a young D for a talented forward needs to be done before our assets lose value. I would have given Reinbacher for Gauthier.

Always take those with a grain of salt as they never know anything but once players go away, they suddenly know everything. Pretty sure MTL was not on his list anyway, American boys don't really like getting out of their country

Having said that: Just drafted and refuse to even meet with the team that has drafted him = giant freaking red flags.

With the exchange of Gauthier/Drysdale +2 nd, does that give an idea of the value of some of our young defenders? Yes Drysdale is a sixth choice but he is small and is very often injured.

Matheson-Kovacevic
Guhle-Barron
Hutson-Reinvacher
Xhekaj- Mailloux
Struble-Harris
Engstrom-Konyushkov

We won’t keep all these defensemen….Who do We keep/trade?

Habs also picked 3rd overall in 2018. Then they traded their best forward for a prospect who became our current best player (Suzuki).

Would you classify that as an ultra successful short-term rebuild (which are considered impossible here)? Given we made the finals in 2021 the team had to have been rebuilt

Or perhaps we have been doing mini rebuilds on the fly for decades, which almost worked one year, but hasn't given us much success otherwise. But that is the price you pay when you are a team like the Habs and consistent losing is not tolerated, that much still hasn't changed.

The end result after 5 years is still Zegras, Gauthier, McTavish, Myntyukov and Carlsson. That's just insane. And you still can't compare it to Buffalo who has been doing that since 2013 now....Anaheim has started it in 2019. It's far from it. But they will hvae to show something soon. While Sabres is way overdue.

And in Anaheim, soon, you'll hvae to add Zellwegger, who is just in his 1st year pro. Luneau, Perreault, etc. But yeah, they will have to add vets at one point.
