The real fun should really starts next year and Hughes must do everything he can to improve it this season.
With Price out, that change the pricture long term.

We have 15 players under contract for 2023-2024
32 millions of cap space

Of course there's Dach and Caufield to take care of......but the picture remains the same.
Lot of cap space, lot of prospects and even already added 1st round pick.
Everything you need to make some damage.

This year, HuGo need to add to that cap space, add to those prospect, add to those picks.

I would be happy if at least 1 of: Hoffman, Dvorak and Armia are moved. The rest (Drouin, Dadonov, Allen, Monahan) expiring contracts are easier to move and might increase in value come TDL.

I think Hoffman or Armia is the term we would like to move. Dvorak is needed during those rebuilding years IMO. I'd trade him if the offer is right but having him in the mix is not a bad thing while Dach is maturing, Suzuki is still growing, and Evans is trying to be more consistent.

I look at team like the Avs and I wonder if they would value Dvorak. Center depth is now thin with Kadri gone. Dvorak could be a good add for them... it's basically a value contract and he can play that defensive role they would value.

Hughes is clearly not looking to shed everything like the Coyotes and Blackhawks. He's not going to think Bedard until Dec/Jan and we get to see how we are doing first. So yeah, having 5 centers in case of injuries is the plan and it makes sense. Unless someone offers us something for Dvorak we can't refuse

I wonder if Dvorak to the Caps would make sense.

We could take back Nick Jensen to slot in on our right side somewhere.

Great post and even there, there's the thing of putting someone on LTIR before the season starts or after the season starts.

In my lil brain it's always a better solution to be cap compliant before the season start and then put players on LTIR.

But with what we have right now they'll probably go with the LTIR before the season starts.
Hughes would know what he is doing. He wouldn't of made this trade if it was going to get him in cap trouble

lets make it the draft
A lot of moved will be made at trade deadline

If we could attach a decent prospect like Mysak to Hoffman, perhaps a team like Chicago or bites, we then can shuffle some prospects down and be cap compliant for the opener and get Price on in season LTIR. That allows us to retain on guys at the deadline

I think Dvo to the Avs or Isles makes a lot more sense now that they both lost out of the Kadri sweepstakes.

HuGo has recent trading history with both, as he with did with the Flames. Makes too much sense and could easily see a good fit with either team, along with about 10 others. It's a matter of time before he gets moved and I hope it's for a young, stud D and we're very weak on the backend.

Dobson, Pulock, Manson etc. would all be welcome!

A future pair of Hutson-Dobson would be *chef's kiss*.
But unfortunately he's clearly not available... for just Dvorak.
I was quite impressed when I realized he had 51 points last year, what a turnaround after such a lukewarm NHL debut! Can't see him signing under 4.5M now.

Anderson + Dvorak + D prospect (not Guhle/Barron) + 2nd for Dobson + Dufour?

HuGo could probably extract 2 non-lottery 1st round picks from Anderson and Dvorak separately.
I would prefer Dobson, but so does NYI probably.

I would think this is it for deals until trade dead line. or is it?????
Think we have too many bodies up front at the moment. If someone would take Armia or Hoffman for free I think we’d move them without a second thought. Same with Drouin but at least he’s expiring.

Lou could had pacioretty for free or bjorkstand for mid range round pick and he didnt move but he will trade Dobson to get Anderson and dvorak.

forget about it

I don't believe it either, don't worry - just a Friday PM daydream.
But those players are not centers, and don't bring what Anderson brings, so it's not really directly comparable. The message behind it, which is that good players go for free, is still applicable though.

Who's going on waivers that we don't want to loose? List of names please. What team is going to claim a contract eating up valuable cap space? Actually, how many teams actually have cap space to claim a $3M+ contract?

If we have to send one or two of Drouin, Byron, Dadonov, Hoffman, Armia to the AHL to create a roster spot, who cares if they are claimed.

Slaf may make the team (we will see) but Byron may start on IR.
We’re looking to trade some of our players at the deadline. If we put them on waivers at full salary and someone takes them we lose them for nothing. If no one takes them, that that shows the rest of the teams that no one wants them and we lose bargaining leverage at the TDL. Better to trade now before the season starts just from an asset management perspective then lose things for free or little return

Does not work capwise for NYI, and I really don't see them trading him AT all, especially for a 2/3C and a streaky Power forward

Why is everyone tripping about the salary cap? So what if we go over? What's the worst that can happen?

Mr.Bettman forces us to forfeit all our games until we are cap compliant? Let it happen.
they could start removing picks....I mean I dont know for sure but other teams have had picks forfeited so maybe....

Arizona had to forfeit a bunch of picks for violating player tampering rules (including a 1st rounder). I'm pretty sure that salary cap violations could be just as severe. I'm not sure what the penalties are for being over the cap, but I would guess that it depends on how much a team is over the cap. Imagine the Habs forfeit their 2023 1st rounder because they wanted to acquire Calgary's 1st rounder in 2024 or beyond.

We have 15 forwards. Something has to break

If you're not cap compliant during the season, you will be penalized. It could be losing draft picks (including 1st round picks) and possibly also being fined,

Engels did mention yesterday that there could be another move they're working on

But I think Habs can afford to be patient for the moment. They can maybe go into camp as is. Sometimes a player gets hurt during preseason. Then there's Monahan, who we don't know yet if he'll be good to go right off the bat or if he'll miss some time at the start of the season. Slaf will likely start with the Habs. But being waiver eligible, he could start in Laval.

I'm sure they're talking trades with other teams. But if they err on the side of caution and be patient, I don't think it's a bad thing that they have 15F at the moment.
