I think Drouin can have a good season if he is in a consistent spot and his wrist surgery fixed his issue with not shooting the puck. Soft forward who don't like contact yes but he's not as bad as some make it out to be. There is a small chance he has a very good production season in a contract year. His playoff numbers are actually solid and I do see some teams knocking on the door if they can get him at the deadline at 50% retention. I don't see us getting any better than a 2nd and it's likely a 3rd rounder.

Not sure what teams will offer us even if we retain 50%. $2.75M prorated cap hit and I suspect contenders will want to add a few pieces (not just Drouin). There will be interest but the interest comes cause they want to pay less

That's very risky! You probably think Slaf and Dach won't turn into legit top 6 assets which is why you think the way you do.

Contenders who have cap space might consider this, not the Habs. M Tkachuk is the same age as Dubois but the cost to acquire is way more. This is about cost to inquire and something we can afford to pay to get a guy 1 year older than Suzuki while we rebuild.
Minor disagreement with you on Drouin.....if he plays to a 50+ point pace for the first half and we offer to retain %50 on him at the TDL.....I want at minimum a 1st round pick in return. I'm thinking Toffoli or Lehk level trade return. 1st + B Prospect or A prospect + 2nd.

*Asterixed options are required plus any three other options

*A. one center among Dach, Dvorak, Evans
*B. any winger over 26 except Anderson, Dadonov
C. Primeau or Montembeault or 3rd round pick
D. Pitlick or Pezzetta or 4th round pick
E. Drouin or Byron or 5th round pick
F. a bottom pairing D-man between Savard or Wideman
G. any prospect not a top 30 pick nor Harris, Roy, Hutson, Dobes, Farrell
I personally don't even think giving up Dach is worth it right now. I wanna see what MSL can do with him. Like I said, trading for him THIS year makes absolutely no sense as Hughes stated Habs won't be competitive so he obviously wants to gracefully tank. So in a year, with only 1 year left before he heads to FA, why give up tons of assets when you're pretty much guaranteed to get him in a year for free. I don't see Habs in 2023-24 being competitive enough to add that final piece in the top 6 to push them over the edge. I see 2024-25 as the year they start doing damage. So like I said, unless it's veteran contracts (still in their prime of course), I'm not willing to give up young key pieces to get something early that will eventually come to be

The Athletic thinks these are the potential destinations for Tkachuk:

St. Louis
Nashville
Detroit
New Jersey
New York Islanders
Vegas
Dallas

Apparently Tkachuk only wants a relatively large American market.

No one is giving that for Drouin, even if he paces for 50 points. Toffoli is a Cup winner and Sutter pushed hard to get him on the team. Lehkonen is the type of playoff warrior a skilled team on the cusp needs to give them that push. Drouin is an enigmatic forward who might decide he’s not feeling well enough to play in the playoffs. You need to bring your expectations way down.

What's the contract extension? Are we moving Gallagher or Price beforehand?

Tying up another huge contract with Price, Gallagher, and Anderson still on the books is awful.
Exactly. It's fun to throw out trade ideas but where are we getting $10 mil in cap space? Also why in the world would we trade for Tkachuk ?After just starting a proper rebuild why would we trade half of our best young assets for him? He alone is not going to make zero difference .We have to somehow shed the awful contracts we have before we can do anything and thats not going to happen anytime soon.

I hope it’s Vegas. I want them to dismantle their team even more and be completely top heavy so I can continue laughing when they keep failing.

Man....I hear you....but, if Drouin can FINALLY reach some potential and play like he has over a full season, I am not so sure I would trade him if all the return is going to be is a 2nd rounder. How many 2nd rounders end up being 50 point guys.

I know, I know....I'm hoping for a lot here.....but if that is how he plays this season, and no one meets our price....I keep him and maybe resign him for that 50% price tag we were willing to retain on him. I'd keep a 50 point Drouin on the roster on a 3 year 2.75 mil contract. Call me crazy....lol

While I would love to see him perform and even if he reached 50 or 60 pts, I would most defnitely trade him. Strike while the iron is hot.

I agree. Thankfully I'll be happy whatever they get for Drouin...

Trading Gallagher's contract is not unlikely. It is impossible
(unless you are taking on an equally as bad contract)
Unless a GM has a MASSIVE hard on for Gally, he’s not going anywhere. Reminds me of Brown in LA. Just accept the fact he’s not going anywhere and hope he can get back to his former self after an injury riddled season and start to contribute again. I think he can but we’ll see.

From Murat Ates, of The Athletic

» - Murat Ates

Accordingly to several reports out of Winnipeg, that’s exactly what he’s been openly telling people close to him. He wants to play for Habs and you’re seeing it play out now. His agent has to be the face of it but PLD is openly telling people that’s exactly what he wants behind closed doors. He’s just not doing it in public and demanding a trade. There’s no doubt they’re working on it though. PLD, his agent and even Hughes alluded to it during his press conference.
I never denied that he probably wants to play here, all I said is that Winnipeg is not that pressed to move him immediately and at a rebate.
He never mentioned any list. He simply said Montreal is a city Dubois would like to play in and he can't comment further.
You got the idea...
Meanwhile their beat writer said PLD openly talks about how he wants to come to Montreal in two years. Not that he simply wants to leave Winnipeg. Plus now the story of him getting a box at the draft in Montreal. There’s a lot more to this than Brisson’s comments.
I mean yeah... He said he won't resign there, clearly, he's on the market.

But Winnipeg will ask a lot and will keep the price high for the foreseeable future IMO.

Just by deduction they probably rejected Romanov/13th pick + Dvorak + more assets...

<Translation>

During the trade with Patrik Laine, the Jets probably knew that Pierre-Luc Dubois was not too happy in Columbus and they were probably already aware that his long-term dream was to play for the Montreal Canadiens. At that moment, two years ago, maybe they thought they could win with him and (Mark) Scheifele. That he would love the city, his family here (his dad works with the Moose) and that sort of thing. I guess they thought they wouldn't have to deal with that scenario this summer, that everything would be so good with his 60-point season and he figured that was the place for him long term.

so from Waite, the murmurs are tha Carey is ready and he wants to win. So, if he doesn't go to LTIR, maybe he plays well and we can actually facilitate a trade and eat some of that salary - especially if knee holds up
