Some people ignore cap considerations when thinking trades. It sort of makes sense. If someone watches the games, but doesn't follow the GM team organization stuff, of course they just want to acquire good players, and don't think about contracts etc.
I'm speaking in terms of their abstract trade value.

In my subsequent post I affirmed I'm well aware of the cap issues it would come with. I'd still find a way to make the deal work if I was GM and presented with the opportunity. Hockey isn't basketball with its extreme bias toward premium ability but it sure isn't too far from it. If you commit half your cap to premium players that's fine - they will carry you quite far.

Zero hope just saying it's his contract year so he's probably gonna play a little harder to rack up some points. Why trade him for a fourth round pick now what's the rush ? Let's see how he reacts then make a decision. But I m with you I don't want him on this team after that . Biggest p***y in the league
If Drouin could actually play a full season he is a 20 goal 50+ point winger. Let's see what he does to start the season playing with Suzuki and Caufield or Dach and Gally. I am down for trading him at the TDL, but Drouin to me is still a tiny bit intriguing. I suspect this season could finally be a returned on our investment in him.

If we are a bottom team again, he will be a prime asset to trade at the TDL. And if he is playing like he can over a full 82 game season, a team will pay large for that at the TDL.

I like Tkachuk.....but Slaf + Dach + Florida 1st is a little rich for my liking.

I want to win....just like you....but I see the path to that via acquiring numerous high quality assets and creating an ongoing pipeline of talent. All three of those pieces are cost controlled for many years. If anything, we should be adding a player like Tkachuk (or PLD) to these young assets, as opposed to either or. If we could get Tkachuk in the same way I suspect we get PLD (Dvorak + Kidney + Florida 1st) I would say go for it. But we should not be selling any of our young, cost controlled, high quality assets at this point.

If we bring Tkachuk in, it should be at the cost of our expensive crap, like Gally, Hoffman, Dad, Dvorak, Anderson, etc.....not the high quality cheap stuff.

Ok, but why the trade is unthinkable is all the team control lost for a player with probably a 10M contract and no team control.

And like basketball, it all depends on which premium player. The Habs have committed lots of money over the years to the wrong guys and that gets you nowhere. I didn't believe in Tkachuk and Gaudreau as building blocks for the Flames and I think they will be better off trading Tkachuk than signing him in the long run.

If you think Kirby Dach is a high-quality asset, what word would you use to describe Matthew Tkachuk?

Bear in mind Tkachuk had more points in his 21 year old season than Dach has in his three years in the NHL combined.

I'm not trying to argue, just making conversation. I'm a big believer in weighing heavily on premium players.

Yeah, I don't believe you. Sounds like words from a Habs fan who hasn't had a legitimate star forward in too long.

I'm not saying Tkachuk is the best skater in the NHL but he sure as hell is closer to that than any Habs player on the roster or in the past twenty years.

Trading in a position of weakness has to be a 2-way street. We did that for Petry. Winnipeg will have to do it for PLD.
How is Winnipeg in a position of weakness? Dubois can't go anywhere for two more years. They can wait up until the TDL in 23/24 before trading him and would still get a solid haul for him.

Well there's no way he's coming to Montreal so it's a moot point. I don't want to argue with you - we obviously see things differently. Why this all started is you couldn't believe someone else was offering so many futures for MT and my point is just that some people don't care about cost-controlled assets or anything like that they just want the best player, even though that is not a winning way to think of player assets in a cap environment. Similar to how some people just buy stocks that they like without regard to how cheap or expensive they are.

He’s intriguing all right. It’s intriguing how one guy can have so much talent and so little heart. This is FINALLY his last year here and people are still holding out hope that “this is the year he puts it together if…….” It’s not happening. Ever.

LaFlamme will finally slink away from the Habs after this year but will soon be starring in the Cirque du Soleil show “Pourquoi” alongside Alexandre Daigle, Pat Falloon, Nail Yakupov, David Fischer, and Scott Scissons.

I hope Dru has a great season so we can trade him at the deadline.

Stalin would want the glory of victory, and he needs a battle for this. What he'd do is take over control over the rest of the league by violence and threats, then stack the deck in his favor, and get the prestige and paint himself as a heroic mastermind after his team wins.
A singular post about Stalin is tragic, all these posts about Stalin is just a statistic.

A team isn't going to give as much for PLD if they know they won't sign him. Look at Vanek. Everyone knew he was going to Minny and all he got was two 2nds.

Best value they'll get is now as Habs can offer PLD a longer, cheaper contract. The longer Jets wait, the less value he'll have.

PLD never said that the ONLY place he's willing to sign an extension is Montreal!

Let's not get crazy here...

The only thing Brisson said is that Montreal is on the list of teams he'd like to play on.

I am very interested in how Dach is going to do in Montreal. I do think he is still a high quality asset. His first year showed a lot of promise. He has all the physical tools to make it in the NHL, and still has skill as a big man. His situation in Chicago was not a good one. With the help of MSL and the right support in terms of line mates, he could have a breakout season. That's is what I am willing to gamble on. I respect that you don't feel that way, but we will have to agree to disagree.

Accordingly to several reports out of Winnipeg, that’s exactly what he’s been openly telling people close to him. He wants to play for Habs and you’re seeing it play out now. His agent has to be the face of it but PLD is openly telling people that’s exactly what he wants behind closed doors. He’s just not doing it in public and demanding a trade. There’s no doubt they’re working on it though. PLD, his agent and even Hughes alluded to it during his press conference.

It is, though it’s always relative to the player’s value. It just means not peak value, which in Petry’s case would have been 1st+prospect as a rental.

Even in a position of weakness, we’re not getting PLD for cap dumps and low picks.

If someone wouldn’t trade Slafkovsky + Dach + FLA 1st for M.Tkachuk I would genuinely question their interest in having a winning hockey team.
The value is obviously there but I wouldn’t do it. We are up against the cap, we’d have to shed $9 million more in contracts which would take even more assets. Not the right move to make.

He never mentioned any list. He simply said Montreal is a city Dubois would like to play in and he can't comment further.

Meanwhile their beat writer said PLD openly talks about how he wants to come to Montreal in two years. Not that he simply wants to leave Winnipeg. Plus now the story of him getting a box at the draft in Montreal. There’s a lot more to this than Brisson’s comments.

I think Drouin can have a good season if he is in a consistent spot and his wrist surgery fixed his issue with not shooting the puck. Soft forward who don't like contact yes but he's not as bad as some make it out to be. There is a small chance he has a very good production season in a contract year. His playoff numbers are actually solid and I do see some teams knocking on the door if they can get him at the deadline at 50% retention. I don't see us getting any better than a 2nd and it's likely a 3rd rounder.

Not sure what teams will offer us even if we retain 50%. $2.75M prorated cap hit and I suspect contenders will want to add a few pieces (not just Drouin). There will be interest but the interest comes cause they want to pay less

If someone wouldn’t trade Slafkovsky + Dach + FLA 1st for M.Tkachuk I would genuinely question their interest in having a winning hockey team.

That's very risky! You probably think Slaf and Dach won't turn into legit top 6 assets which is why you think the way you do.

Contenders who have cap space might consider this, not the Habs. M Tkachuk is the same age as Dubois but the cost to acquire is way more. This is about cost to inquire and something we can afford to pay to get a guy 1 year older than Suzuki while we rebuild.

What's the contract extension? Are we moving Gallagher or Price beforehand?

Tying up another huge contract with Price, Gallagher, and Anderson still on the books is awful.

Brisson never said dubois would only want to play specifically in montreal. He said something like ‘’montreal is one of the place he would like to go’’ and he was speaking to a quebec media so…
It's called diplomacy. You don't go out and randomly name one team just like that.
