I get why they did it, those are two great players. But it should have been the first warning for Chevy. Something was rotten with the team. Now he’s hanging on to a core that has shown it’s not good enough to compete.
Chevy's in no-man's land with that roster, that's for sure. He's going to need to reshuffle and retool at least but it's hard to do with an organization that is in no way secure in its ability to build a winning or competitive team. He probably thinks a bird in hand (Wheeler, Scheifele et al.) is closer to competition than potential two in bush (sell and rebuild, and hope it actually gets built back up).
Something that is important to underline is this: nearly nobody wants to play in Winnipeg.
If I'm a competitive person I'd be inclined toward keeping Schiefele and Wheeler and Helleybuck and trying to making it work too.
Selling PLD for spare parts won't help him... but spare parts might be all he can get if PLD is playing hardball. Who would give serious assets for a player they have to sign to a 2year 8m per year contract?
Chevy will get a 1st round pick... and a solid NHLer signed with term... and a solid prospect... and that's it. Give or take a cap dump.
Would you do Dvorak + FLA 1st (top10 protected) + Sean Farrell + Byron?
It's an interesting trade because for the first time in a long time there is a player who wants to join the Habs but for
whatever reason some Habs fans are so used to the Ancien Régime that they think trades are unnecessary and holding onto late round 1st round picks with tight, white knuckles is the only way a team should operate.
