Hanifin plays more minutes than Walman, but Walman/Hanifin about the same physically, maybe a little edge to Hanifin, roughly the same offence, and Hanifin gets pp time, and Walman actually seems to block more shots. Hanifin is the better defenceman, not claiming otherwise, but not 3-4 mil a year in difference.
If Walman did nothing else but have an extra 300-400 games to his name, he wouldn't be a $3.4M/yr player.

He also wouldn't be a 7+ guy either. To me Hanifin is how we get a little better on our blueline, but not really moving the needle to us being a year in contender. If we can get him as UFA sure, you see about bringing him in. If we both give up assets for Hanifin, get better as a team, lower our draft spot, we really have not that many top notch young guys who are going to help us get better in the years to come. I don't think we are in a spot to give up any of our top assets unless a supremely good player is coming back, and Hanifin isn't that piece.

If all it cost was a future not this year 1st, Johansson + something else that is one thing, but that wouldn't be what the Flames would want.

Are their many TDL examples when a player like Hanifin was dealt for a recent top 9 drafted prospect plus a 1st rd pick in the 16 to 20 range?

Personally I cant recall any so I'd think that this year likely wont be the first time it happens from Detrout..or anyone else

Far closer to $7M than $3.4M

We have five drafted first rounders and a couple near firsts in reserve. We also probably want to condense some of our talent rather than have them stretched out between a dozen drafts. Yes, we need to keep adding over time, but we need to get good first.

Not to mention if we acquire Hanifin we need to move roster players. That's assets back in.

A little? Walman is 10 ply, he throws as many hits as Ghost. He also can't win any puck battles.

Pay more attention to Walman during the next game, and you'll realize how soft he really is. Watch every shift, the lack of physical contact, and him coughing up the puck if there is any contact.

Ed-Seider is the endgame I think.
I still think they should both anchor different pairings. Think Nick/Vlad on different pairings or Nick/Cheli on different pairings. Our two best should be able to hold their own with competent partners. I think Walman works fine for now, provided an Ed + XXXX pairing can take some of the big matchups minutes.

Not to kill anyone's hopes but if you can trust Yzerman at what he actually does say to the media, I don't expect us giving up much of the future in terms of high end picks or prospects this year. I'm too lazy to find the quotes but he said basically, and I'm paraphrasing a good bit. "The worst thing you can do is try to come out of a rebuild by trading your prospects and picks before you've even accomplished anything".

Now if that's a player who isn't a rental, that makes sense but any player he views with an extension in hand likely puts it out of reach for what we should be giving up before making the playoffs. I would still think he is going to be cautious if we are in a playoff spot come the deadline, and playing well. He may not want to alter the balance too much, since Kane was essentially a mid season addition already.

Well, we're a rebuilding team that has a grand total of 2 games played by rookies this year. So not sure how to rationalize the things that are said vs the things that are done.

Yzerman isn't trading ASP, Kasper, or Danielson for Hanifin.

I think 2024 1st, Maatta (for roster space), AlJo, and maybe a second gets you Hanifin.

I don't know why you are taking about not having young guys when our prospect pool is pretty universally ranked top 10.

Our draft spot is likely 18-22 and no one we draft in that range this year is sniffing the NHL before 2028.

Hennka has mentioned before as well that Yzerman's history with Tampa often reflected a tendency to avoid major deals at the deadline. That and I have a hard time believing, as you do, that Yzerman is going to view this team as a serious contender this season.

Have many DRW fans on this forum advocated for trading high end assets for aged free agent vets at the TDL?

I can agree the lack of rookies playing seems weird for a rebuilding team. I'm hoping their approach is they are giving our young current core a chance at the playoffs and the prospects will fill in for playoff year 2, 3, etc. He may view getting Larkin, Mo and Ray a playoff series this year over getting Ed games? I fully expected alot more youth in the line up this year but I am happy with the results this far.

Maybe the young guys have a better chance of success to come in next year on a team that had success already and no pressure but to play their roles.

I don't have the answers, just an uneducated fans guess.

Still trusting the Yzerplan and drinking the Kool aid.

Not like Hanifin is some physical behemoth here. He doesn't have that many hits either, and most of are likely not even full hits.

I never said Yzerman would do that, I said there were people here throwing names like that around.

Wings prospect pool hasn't looked great this year outside 2 or 3 guys, so doesn't matter what people currently think about our prospects.

I didn't say he did, but he's not as soft as Walman though. Hanifin doesn't initiate contact much, but he doesn't avoid contact either. I think Walman is protecting his surgery repaired shoulder, and he might have re-injured it when he crashed into the goal post earlier this season.

I'm just pointing out that people here don't realize how soft Walman is, especially given his size. Klim, Chia, and Raz are the only players that weigh more on this team.

Regardless, I'm more interested in Zadarov than Hanifin. Someone that will actually protect teammates. I'll take the 2 minute instigator every time, this team has decent PK.

I said it before, depending on the price, go after Markstrom/Tanev or Hanifin from Calgary, package Maatta and Husso to send back including a pick or prospect (again depending on price). Then ship Ghost out to restock some pics and bring Ed up.

Zero interest in acquiring markstrom for an additional 2 years when we have Lyon at 900k playing great and we have 2 highly touted goalie prospects in the pipeline

We have edvinsson waiting for his shot so no thanks on hanifin and the 8.5x8 contract he'll likely be seeking

Not to mention the high cost in acquiring those players. Rather go after a 22-25 year old power forward on the top 6 since we have too many soft smurfs as it is and not tanev since hes 34 but someone who plays his style who plays hard and blocks shots but is a decade younger

Ppl see us on the cusp of a playoff spot and all of a sudden it's trade everything for costly older players who won't lead us to a cup anyways

Stay on the path and get younger players with upside

right on target , including the young power forward wrecking ball . without concern for his offense making him cheaper to aquire , but he would still make space for the talent

Hanifin is a top pairing defenseman. I couldn’t find a more recent WAR chart but through 2020-2023 his underlying numbers reflect a top pairing two way D with great skills in transition. He is 10x the player Walman is, it’s not even close.

Hanifin fits perfectly into our system and what we want out of our defenseman. He can anchor the 2nd pairing and fill our biggest need. We also have space to get him signed long term. I know this next thought probably goes against the grain here, but I think things in this league can change quickly and you need to seize your opportunities. Right now we have Seider, Raymond, and Kane all signed for less than 5 million combined. We also have excellent depth scoring and Lyon is playing excellently. Add in Hanifin and we have a shot at making some noise this year come playoffs.

It's a statement about his ability to play actual defense. Thought it was pretty straight forward. If all we want is fists we can slot Kostin in as a D, but that seems rather pointless.
So you've never seen him play, lol.

At least watch the video I posted. It made your comment pretty funny.
