In 12 year old parlance, Bobby Orr is the Mewtwo of dmen.

But for real, if you've never seen footage of the guy playing, find some. He could move at speeds that would be fast in the modern game and he was doing it in garbage skates. Like if McDavid had his current offensive skill but also played at defense at an undisputed Norris level.

Is it ageist if I'm surprised that you know who Mewtwo is?

That feels like the ignorant Giroux argument, just one season right?
Yep.

In the three seasons prior to this one, he's 8th in defensemen P/GP (minimum 100 games played) in 2nd in PP points (4 less than Burns, with 28 less games played). Look at the only names above him and remember this includes time when he had that groin injury that required surgery (same one as Giroux)...

Not special and only one good year!

It just comes down to blind bias, as usual. Some posters on here refuse to admit how good he is.

In their defense, he is a whole half season removed from this...

Nothing special here.

One good season...if you ignore his Calder runner up season.

Christ...he has played 3.5 season and has played great in 2 of them.

Why can't people just tell the truth???
Yeah, played great in two of them and the one relatively poor one (still 39 points) was the same year that Giroux had his worst year since his first full season (09-10)...

And what did they have in common? Matching groin surgeries/rehab to fix an injury that they had been tolerating the previous season, which is known to effect players for up to a full year.

And then the next year, when finally fully healthy, both look amazing and set career highs.

Ghost was a dynamic rookie, but he was also erratic defensively. An exciting player, but not a top defenseman yet.

Last year is the only season of four that any objective observer would consider him among the top defensemen in the league. And his regression this year, unless an injury is revealed, suggests that's probably as good as it gets. Which ain't bad, but ain't special, either.

Nor did he look "amazing" last year, he was clearly slower than his rookie year and the same this year.
He was smarter, more defensively responsible, and did a good job running the PP.
As we saw twice in the playoffs, he's not that hard to shut down with good forechecking.
While he wasn't as bad as the raw numbers suggest, Ghost was far from a "special" player in the playoffs. And if you want to win the Cup, you should weigh playoff performances more than regular season.

If they were to trade Ghost (I am not saying they should) would they really have any shot of getting another dman of equal value?
If they were to trade Ghost I would think they would look at a similarly valued winger.
Not saying this is a good deal or not but Ghost for Jaden Schwartz.

Part of the attraction of trading Ghost is that some team, probably a mid-tier playoff team, would be willing to pay for his specialist skill set.

It seems most likely that he'd return an A- prospect + roster player, or a comparable young forward.

Just swapping him straight up for another defenseman seems unlikely.

Perfectly proving my point that people wanting to trade Ghost aren't using their heads.

Such a dumb suggestion that it defies belief.

Yeah, lets trade a top 10 offensive defensemen for a prospect or a young forward. Dont have any of those!

Please someone shoot me in the head and get me away from this stupid planet.

He’s talented....but not Provorov talented. He’s very good at scoring but don’t you think there’s an over abundance of young cheap D talent in our pipeline to compensate/offset his loss? Especially if it gains us a FAST winger who can pot 25 goals? Certainly would not deal him if it didn’t represent an overall gain to the team.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh.............................................. wut

1) he's easily more talented than Provorov

2) what cheap D talent in the pipeline gets even remotely close to Ghost?

3) not in a million years would I sell low on him like that

Yeah, I can definitely see that.

And actually the goal from that champ game is EXACTLY what was thinking about when I said that.

But he also does similar skating/weaving stuff in the NHL too.

"Lichtenwald is smart enough to go to the front of the net and most Saskatchewan kids are... not going to play like a superstar, just going to pick up the garbage in the front of the net."

Epic comments about a family friend, and pride of Saskatoon, Eli Lichtenwald.
Having played in some higher level beer leagues in Saskatchewan and always been undersized (5'10'), you tend to come home a little banged up if you sit around in that area long enough

It's not a matter of "trading" Ghost or Voracek.
It's a matter of deciding who should be untouchable, and then listening to offers for the rest.

To me, the untouchables are:

Hart, Giroux, Couts, Patrick, TK, Lindblom, Provorov, Sanheim, Myers, Frost and Farabee.
All are top talents under 25 years old except Giroux, the leader, and Couts, a franchise center.
And this year's 1st rd pick.

Everyone else, prospects, players and draft picks, should be made available if the right deal comes along.
So while you might be actively shopping Simmonds, Raffl and Folin as UFAs, you make it clear you'll listen to offers for the others.

We're talking a team that's tied for 28th, it's not like these players have made us a resounding success.

I'll just let Striker carry on here because I know he will. Everything he says I would also say except maybe in a slightly less crazy way.
