This is fascinating. GMs used to be far stingier with picks than they have been recently. We’re now seeing multiple teams make a statement about the value of the draft. To some, they’re more useful as trade currency than an opportunity to acquire potential young players that will outperform their cap hit in the future.

I think that this phenomenon is more specific to teams that are right up against the cap than a club like Carolina. Players like Jeannot and a retained McCabe are all examples of high-value contract situations for teams that need to look for these specific varieties of trades because they choose to maintain top-heavy salary structures.

Draft picks are a lottery. Outside the top 10, if you have the chance to turn that draft pick into a guaranteed contributor on the roster, you're kind of foolish if you don't.

For every diamond in the rough there are 4 or 5 others in that spot in the surrounding years that never amount to anything. Like when we traded a late 1st for Skjei, that's a deal you do every year if you can.

McCabe would of made sense at 2 million as that left shot depth guy not sure why Carolina wouldn’t of been in on him

7 goals and isn’t physical definitely wouldn’t pay much that’s for sure

I think contending teams are finally starting to realize that a “1st round pick” sounds better than the 29th pick or whatever their picks end up being.
Makes sense cause those guys picked that late don’t usually end up playing for a couple years if at all so why not get a player that is already established

Wonder if they could cook up another blockbuster with Calgary but I just don’t see how Calgary could sell

This is personal speculation on my part, but in regards to the bidding war for Jeannot, I wonder if Tampa, Toronto, the Oilers, and the Stars were the main bidders here. Every one of these teams were right up against the cap and had few players with the right salary structures that they could bid on. Toronto was clearly using some of the Muzzin LTIR for McCabe but could theoretically have been able to fit one more league-minimum cap hit.

As for the Hurricanes, they are in the driver's seat at the deadline, in many ways, because there are an excess of teams that want to dump cap space and few suitors for it outside of the Hurricanes. They will have a huge selection of choices to choose from in that regard, and don't be surprised if the price tag that the Canes pay is far smaller than what is going around in the cap-strapped areas of the deadline market.

if Toronto is dumping Kerfoot, he would be a pretty good LW for us.
Agree Gocane. Kerfoot is a good one.
I've watched him play for the Leafs in the past 3 years.
He's very under rated . Excellent speed. Can play all forward positions and situations. ES, PK & PP.
He may be the 'odd man out' after the Leafs traded for ROR and McCabe.
Will the Leafs be a willing trade partner with the 'Canes?
Alex Kerfoot might be the odd man out after Toronto’s latest acquisitions in Toronto.

As for the Hurricanes, they are in the driver's seat at the deadline,

Maybe in the driver's seat, but driving in the right lane with their flashers on going 45 MPH while Tor, NYR, TBL, NJD and BOS are going 75 in the left lane. :sarcasm:

Thing is, this can only work out for 1 team so at least 4 / 5 of those teams are going to be left with some buyer's remorse, unless the players they acquired re-sign with them.

Gotta give yourself the best chance to win and that’s what those teams have done. Ya it’s not gonna workout for some but at least they won’t have second thoughts about not making a deal to try and better the team

I wasn't suggesting otherwise.

Alright now bring out the crack pipes… Step 1: Ovi asks for a trade now that the caps are going into rebuild mode canes trade for Ovi and Wilson, 2x first morrow etc. part b: Ovi gets on the horn with his boys in Russia and gets them to release Nikishin. Iteration Gamma: profit

The thought of Ovi on our Power play gives me goose bumps.

4 days left.

(For my sanity) Can you please identify the “excess” teams and what players they would make available for us at reduced prices?

I kinda hope Toronto finally makes it out of the first round. Although it feels like if they finally break the curse of the 1st they might just go all the way.

They might have slightly overpaid for a few of their acquisitions but they feel like the right moves for them. It’s almost like they were waiting on having the right goalie putting up numbers they are comfortable with to push their chips to the middle of the table.
