Can't say I'm fond of Hayes as a pickup, but I think he's more likely to be dealt at $4.5M or less than Duchene is at $5M.

Of the two, I think Duchene makes much more sense. The idea of putting Duchene as the offensive #2C between Teravainen and Necas is a very interesting one.
Starts getting into a weird area where now Hayes or Duchene is locked in to be the "big addition" and Carolina has to pay increasing amounts of trade capital to reduce their Cap.

Viscerally if Carolina trades a 1st round pick or decent prospects for Hayes I would cringe. If they then said "but we got him at $4 million" that is... Better? But we still gave up good assets for Plan C which kind of sucks.

How do you fit Saros in though? I mean Raanta just had his 3rd shutout of the season, and Andersen has been playing quite well lately. Do you just say, thanks for your service but Saros is our new starter? I just can't see it.

One thing about Hayes: if the Canes are talking about them and insiders are buzzing about them, then that's not the player that they're likely to acquire. We likely won't know who their real targets are until deadline day.

Nashville posters told me that Duchene is not a center anymore. didn't trash him as a winger but said explicitly that he cannot be relied on as a center.

If Duchene's contract is a no go, I would pursue Boeser and pool party as the two adds. Boeser has 1 year remaining beyond this season I believe and he can be tried on Aho's wing. If he doesn't click, goes to the 4th line for the playoffs. Probably inexpensive if Canes do not require retainage. pool party should be very inexpensive at this point particularly if Edm is pursuing high end Dman. he is reclamation project material. ease him into the lineup and keep it simple. He may be a depth piece only this year.

I mean, I love Freddie, Raanta, and Kooch....

But if there's a reasonable path to get Saros to play behind our current defense, f***ing do it. That's how you completely neutralize what NYR and NJ are doing to load up offensively. Freddie and Raanta are excellent, but Saros can play to another level.
Yeah Saros and Freddie this year in met with Kooch ready incase of injury. Next season Saros and Kooch.

BTW Annti thanks for everything

Isn't Muzzin out the rest of the year? I can see why Toronto would be desperate for D help. Still, if you're giving up a 1st I'm sure you could do better than Jake McCabe.

Saros may be a risk of an addition. Saros stops a lot and can steal games, dont get me wrong. How much of that is because he faces a ton of shots and can "get into a rhythm."

In the last 3 seasons Saros has 140 starts that he finished. Only 7 times has he faced under 22 shots. 5%.

And why are you telling me this

Andersen has had 69 starts he finished and has faced less than 22 shots 15 times, 21.7%

Its a small sample size for sure but Saros' save percentage drops .184 in games of less than 22 shots against.

i dont expect much clout to taken with this because of the sample size. Im only saying it make be a risk if Saros is an in rhythm guy, just something to consider.

This is fascinating. GMs used to be far stingier with picks than they have been recently. We’re now seeing multiple teams make a statement about the value of the draft. To some, they’re more useful as trade currency than an opportunity to acquire potential young players that will outperform their cap hit in the future.
