Not that I think we’re in on Guentzel, let alone getting him, but he’s obviously a greater need than Hanifin. Also, considering that the Flames are on a 5-0 win streak and have an outside shot at the playoffs still, the price for Hanifin will be astronomical.
Not really, the Flames aren't a contender and Conroy knows it. They're definitely moving him.

Also, Guentzel is a greater need for these playoffs, but we couldn't sign him long-term. We can sign Hanifin to replace Monty.

Yes, but let’s say the cost truly is Lundell for Hanifin on extension, do you make that deal?

Tough to say, I wouldn't personally but it is fair value. I'd just try to sign him in the summer. Maybe Zito just tries to gauge Hanifins interest right now, just pulls off the rental trade, then signs him long term after.

I don’t know, even signing Montour was in question if we plan on keeping Reinhart and Forsling.

Lundell is fair value in a trade for Hanifin, but why weaken our C and F depth?

We could sign Hanifin. It would mean carrying a 22 man roster and cutting costs in other areas.

That's why I said I wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't blame Zito if he did. Our D would be set for years, assuming we can keep Mikkola and Ek too.

Trading Lundell for an extended Hanifin is a tough one. At first blush I say no, but at second blush I can see the pros for doing it.

What really gives me pause is Lundell has a lot of hockey ahead of him. He’s just getting started and I can see him really rounding into form over the next couple of seasons as a solid two way 50-60 pt guy. It’s hard to let that go.

I wouldn’t trade Lundell either. Tippett and Crouse for example took a while but are now key pieces.

On the other hand, Zito was able to find OEL and Mikkola and Kulikov at bargain prices. You could argue he could do that at forward as wel but he’s already got Lundell who’s cheap for now. I wouldn’t want to give that up.

I think that if Paul Maurice and Bill Zito think that Paul is going to stick around and keep coaching this team int his style for several years, then quality centers are more valuable than quality defensemen. Moreso than usual, I mean.

And Lundell is definitely a guy that I think is going to be a quality center with a little more seasoning. He almost already is there.

This defensive structure the Panthers are running -- combined with the great two way play of the forwards -- really seems to be reducing the need for defensemen with top skating ability. For God's sake, we made it to the SCF last season with Marc Staal playing big minutes, and that guy can not skate.

Here's why Hanifin makes sense: Brandon Montour is going to want a max term contract and is about to be thirty years old. Noah Hanifin also wants a max term contract, and just turned twenty seven years old.

If you think they're comparable players, then you'd rather have Hanifin. If you think Lundell is going to walk (seems unlikely as he is RFA, not UFA), then okay, this move actually makes a ton of sense. But again, Lundell is RFA and honestly looks to me like he's on the verge of a breakout... you get that man back under contract.

We will get one of Tarasenko, Mantha, Zucker, Novak or others on a bargain-deal… And Zito will call it a day… Maybe announce a couple of extensions !

No way another crazy or not scenario breaks out of the next few days !!

I think you guys are missing something. Zito has shown he isn't afriad of trading what people think is a core piece. The more I think about it, the more I think the piece going the other way in a Hanifin deal isn't going to be a center like Lundell. It'll be one of our D like Ekblad (yes I know he has a NMC, that's an obstacle). Hanifin becomes an immediate replacement for that 7.5MM cap hit.

Has he done it mid season though? I can't think of an example except for Tippett. I'm just weary of shaking up the locker room chemistry when its so good right now.
I'm not saying it's a good move. I'm just saying it fits better with what Zito has done in the past. Personally I think Hanifin is a luxury we don't need and cannot afford.

No way... Our defence is humming and Ek is playing great. Why would he do such a drastic change now, plus we'd be even more LD/RD imbalanced.

We are on a roll, defense is amazing. Trading fire Hanifin now would be a mistake IMO.

Bring in another top-9 forward and call it please Zito

Even when Ek's full NMC turns into 12 team NTC in the summer I would bet Calgary is on it.

I find it pretty amazing recently that teams are talking quite openly about what moves they’re looking to do at TDL. Teams like EDM. PHL, WSH, PIT, ARI, CGY, but not limited to them. Even McDavid said something publicly which I honestly think is inappropriate.

I’m glad I haven’t seen or heard anyone from the Panthers get into specifics.

I understand pursuing hanifin, especially if they don’t think they can get one of Forsling or montour done. If we were focusing on this season in a bubble, then sure I probably wouldn’t pursue him either. I’d much prefer a top-9 forward, ideally 2 honestly but I know that’s asking for too much. But D like hanifin, in their prime, typically don’t become available and usually don’t hit the open market. And I’m sure where ever he goes he’ll most likely extend so I doubt he’ll make it to market either way. So long term, I get it. When the opportunity is there you gotta pursue it. The thing that hurts the most is this idea that keeps getting pushed that he prefers to sign in tampa. I don’t wanna be the 2nd option. But then again, I’m sure most free agents are like that anyways. They probably have a preferred destination if they could pick anyone but chances are they sign somewhere else that’s good but maybe not that spot. I doubt we’re the #1 preferred place of every free agent we’ve signed
