To all the dumb dumbs in here being like “Dubas signed a guy who got claimed by Arizona, hurr hurr” what’s the smarter move? To not sign him and have a 0% chance of getting him on the roster? Or to sign him and have a >0% chance of getting him on the roster? I don’t understand the logic
Dubas' issue isn't Hari Sateri - it's that he's not well equipped to build a hockey team.

Dubas failure to address the goalie situation is remarkable.

He looked so pissed at the press conference that it was leaked he balked at paying 1st + Knies for MAF/Hagel.

Then the desperate Finnish goalie move that he ends up losing on waivers. Wow.

Now he goes in the playoffs hoping that guy can stay healthy and that he finds his game. If they lose in the 1st round because Campbell is not perfect, Dubas is gone. I remember that goal.

Solid D+.

Jets are an odd one and we had a busy day. We are not contenders and sold our main piece in Copp, but we also bought replacements as backup in case we make the playoffs by accident. The Copp deal was okay, and we didn't trade Stastny (maybe he re-signs?). We still only have 7 draft picks this year, or 8 if NYR makes the 3rd round with Copp. Overall a lot of meh, so I give us a C+.

In:
Mason Appleton
Zach Sanford
Morgan Barron
2nd round pick (NYR, conditionally a 1st)
2nd round pick (NYR)
4th round pick (Arizona)
5th round pick (NYR)
7th round pick (Pittsburgh, conditional and probably not coming)

Out:
Nathan Smith
Bryan Little's contract
Andrew Copp
Nathan Beaulieu
4th round pick (Appleton trade)
5th round pick (Sanford trade)
6th round pick (Copp trade)

A for the Flames.
Toffoli, Jarnkrok, Carpenter are solid additions that fit the team well and how Sutter wants to play.
Toffoli coming with term is nice as well.

It's an HF narrative at this point. The Leafs didn't lose last year because of goaltending. Campbell is also a much better goalie than he's been the last little while. A backup would have been nice, but I'd much rather take the chance on waiving a Euro UFA over dealing a first off someone like Fleury.

Ken Holland with the worst move of the day giving Montreal Lagesson a 2nd RD pick and a 7th RD pick for Kulak.

I called Kulak being our biggest move about 5 days ago and said we'd pay more than a 3rd that he should cost so in that sense I'm not even disappointed as I expected it.

As a Coyotes fan I'm happy. We moved out a 2nd and 4th and we got back a pair of 3rds (assuming Dallas makes the playoffs). Given that Arizona has a bazillion picks over the next few drafts, I'm willing to call that a wash. To me, the picks sent out versus the picks acquired, are essentially a net neutral. Not real discernable difference to me. Picks evened out.

Then there's the Bryan Little dump. He's never playing again. LTIR. And insurance is paying 80% of his contract. That's really very insignificant for Arizona. This isn't some big burden that will influence the budget or other moves. Much like the shifting of draft picks, I'm going to say this is inconsequential. So with that and the picks out of the way, it leaves only the players.

Out:
Riley Nash, Johan Larsson, and Scott Wedgewood

In:
Jack McBain, Nathan Smith, and Harri Sateri

^ That's a really good trade. Three UFA vets that don't figure into next season for two solid prospects and a perfectly adequate replacement for the back-up. As a Coyotes fan, it sure feels an awful lot like getting Jack McBain and Nathan Smith basically for free.

The picks in (2x 3rds) vs. the picks out (2nd+4th) are a wash. The Little dump is a wash. Wedgewood and Sateri are a wash. Nash and Larsson weren't going to be re-signed and are both 4th line veterans, anyway. The only net change, from my perspective, is that McBain and Smith were added. Nothing else really matters, at all.

Feels an awful lot like just getting McBain and Smith for nothing.

Sorry, I should have said 'inability to build a playoff team'

I don't think Dubas has done a good job DESPITE his record. He inherited the core of the team and seems to be unable to properly build around them. They are a good regular season team however.
Is it Dubas’ fault Matthews and Marner disappeared in the playoffs last year?

Calgary did well. West took it a lot easier than the east. Avs got a bit better, not much else.

Only one team can come out of the east at least haha

The eastern gauntlet is going to be crazy. 1st round will be a bloodbath with some excellent teams getting eliminated right away.

From those 8 teams, clearly Florida made the biggest splash. Couple of huge adds in Giroux and Chiarot. Boston made a big move too and got the single best player in Lindholm. Tampa made a shrewd move too but ultimately it was just for cheap quality depth.

Carolina got Domi for relatively cheap, good add for them. NYR got better too. The rest of the teams kinda were left behind. Washington didn't really do anything meaningful, and Toronto (Giordano) and Pittsburgh (Rakell) got players who I think won't move the needle at all.

In the west, things are more quiet. Colorado is clear #1 team and made a nice add in Lehkonen. Other than that really only Calgary and Minnesota got better.
