Sharks C for lack of moving more pieces

Turned Middleton (wasn't even a regular on the roster until this year) into some assets is the only good thing

Traded a player who is deemed not part of the future - good
Got back the 14th? LHD in the system - Bad
Did not "weaponize our cap space" to gain additional assets - bad
Did not go out an add any available players that may help in this or future years - bad
Gave up draft capital for our team to retain on a player

Habs will continue to look for deals and new teams for them. They got term left so we don't have to move them for meh offers. I think we will look to move Petry and Hoffman this summer. Weber as well so it gives us the cap flexilibty we prefer.

Then we might move Byron, Drouin, and maybe Dvorak at the next deadline.

Should move Drouin... I thought Dvorak was active yesterday. Armia is pretty good also

Think Habs won the draft.

Leafs and Oilers were the biggest surprises, as neither improved their goalie situation which is dire. Leafs probably get a worse grade just because the Satari scenario is shockingly poor and the bitching about it from the Front Office when it worked as intended, was funny.

Leafs, however, did add Giordano which is a great piece to add, but when it comes playoff times, you just don't see teams win it that are solid between the pipes, so Leafs hopes will ride on Campbell, which has to bring a bit of anxiety for Leafs fans as he is coming off the IR.

I think habs fans are upset with what Dvorak costed us, especially considering how shit this year has been.

This summer, I fully expect Shea's contract gone, Drouin, Armia, Allen, and Petry all gone. Would love to ship Gally, but don't think any team is willing to take on that contract.

I am sure Hughes tries to move as much as he can but he's not desperate to do it for meh returns. I think it's still fluid and it's going to be an approach on finding trade partners at the draft, in the summer, and even during the season next year.

I think Dvorak stays cause our center depth behind Suzuki is thin.

Armia looks better when he's not on the 4th line. He's very inconsistent but when he's on his game, he's effective. I expect some sort of rebound from him next year

With Drouin, I see him being moved as a pending UFA next deadline.

What do you think the plan is for next season? Semi rebuild or try to go for it? Beniers I imagine will get a chance.

Does the coach look like the right fit?
Beniers is expected to be signed after the Frozen Four and also expected to play on the team this season. It burns a year of his ELC but Francis seems ok with that.

I don't know about rebuild since we never had anything to begin with .. ;). But Francis has stated that his plan is to be aggressively pursue options to improve us before next season. He plans to use some of the draft capital we have accrued to acquire roster players/prospects who can help us right away. He is also ok using excess cap space to get useful players by taking on cap dumps, etc. He has also mentioned improvement via free agency using that cap space but the FA market is rather thin this season with most of the top guys likely to be re-signed anyway. I expect him to get some small pieces to help the top-6 F or top-4 D to fill it out as a stop gap but I doubt they are going to be long term solutions. There is also a challenge to get FA's willing to sign with a bottom-3 team. What he does remains to be seen but it does not sound like either him or Leiweke are ok with finishing as a lottery team next season.

The coach, most of us think, is a terrible fit. Same mistakes being repeated through the season, extremely poor special teams, etc. Francis has said that it has been tough for the coaching staff because of COVID and injuries but I am pretty sure Hakstol does not make it through another bad season like this.

Ranger fan so I'll do those first and then some of the others I thought hit it out of the park. Only doing deadline day for now.

Rangers (Braun). Trade grade - B+
Rangers (Motte). Trade grade - A
Rangers (Copp). Trade grade - B
Penguins (Rakell). Trade grade - A
Montreal (Trade Lehkonen). Trade grade - A
Flames (Carpenter) Trade grade - A
Colorado (Andrew Cogliano) Trade grade - B
San Jose (Kahkonen) Trade grade - B

Flames: C. Toffoli is B+. Fair price for a great winger on great AAV/term. Jarnkrok was an overpay, but he's a okay player and the cost wasn't that excessive. Carpenter will make the team worse by being gifted middle 6 minutes over better players. They didn't make anything bad enough to compare to Chiarot, Lauzon and Lindholm trades, so that's the lowest grade I can logically give them. Still think we're at least a top 3 team, but the panthers and avalanches getting giroux and lehkonen respectively just... suck.

My only issue was not using their ample cap space get free assets by helping other deals.

yeah, i've said that elsewhere. I would not have been mad with picking up some costly healthy-scratches for a 2nd or 3rd if we weren't going to go big-game hunting.

Cap space is valuable in the off season, but is an asset with an expiration timer on it at the end of the season. better off using every penny if possible.

toffoli deal was electric for flames. essentially hughes' first deal and he was arguably impatient. if he sits and waits till last minute, like he did with lehkonen, he upgrades that 5th to another high pick and gets a better prospect. 100%.

Think Habs won the draft.
Nah.... tearing down and selling the juiciest bits to the highest bidder isn't that hard. Yes, he got good assets in return, but this was the easy part.

If even one long-term contract like Petry or Hoffman was gone without a bad contract coming back, I'd be far happier. I mean, I like the trades, but the tough part is yet to come.

I disagree.

We got an absolute haul in the trades, and while getting rid of Petry/Hoffman/Dvorak/Armia/etc would have been nice, I think we did exactly what we needed to do and we did it while putting ourselves in a great position for the rebuild.

Guerin did well. Shored up some places where they were leaking(defense and physicality), but at a relatively small cost. My main niggle was the Jost for Sturm trade. Deslaurier is the perfect low cost add. Hopefully Middleton will add a bit of snarl and defense on the back end. Fleury...we'll see. Jost is a nothing burger, IMO, and I'd rather have Sturm at 1/3rd the cost, but ...we'll see. I see mediocre speed, strength, and skill in Jost. Hard to overcome that. If I hear one more time about how good he is in the room I'm gonna vomit.

MTL cleared out a lot of players, and got a couple of picks, but now Hughes has to make sure that he has a scouting dept. that can spot talent. They have to start hitting on picks, because they just aren't talented enough right now.

Calgary A+ Toffoli is the best add and they set the market and cut possibilites for opponents
Montreal A+ Get a lot of valuables picks

Theses clubs are the only A+ in my book

Not a lot of mentions for Minnesota. I liked what they did getting Fleury and Middleton

Hopefully Gorton has been working on finding more scouts, building an analytics dept, and on almost every dept as they are all undermanned or non existent.
