Haven't you guys heard? The Leafs are full of chokers and headcases, why on earth would we spend a 1st rounder on a goalie? The odds of Campbell or Mrazek finding their way back to respectability is about as good as the odds of any other rental goalie coming in and playing well. Screw that, it won't matter if Marner starts flipping pucks over the glass again. The entire Atlantic is tooling up for a blood bath, the East as a whole is insane, and there's Colorado coming up the Western side. The Leafs are a darn good team, good enough to win it all, and a stable goalie would really help that. But this Leafs team is nowhere near stable enough to be worth going all-in for. Dubas knows his job is on the line, and frankly I'm glad that he's not spending a 1st rounder in a lame attempt to save it.
As you can see, I'm not thrilled that the Leafs decided to go the rental route, but I will begrudgingly admit that I really like the Gio+Blackwell deal. I'm expecting Giordano to be a really nice fit for the Leafs, and Blackwell is a good depth pickup. That's a decent futures package to give away, but we made it out of the deadline with some good players and all of our top prospects intact, so I'm happy.
Grade: B-
The deals we did make were great. The deals we didn't make might be what kills us, but I think it was the right call to make.
