Based on Kypreos' reporting it sounded like the Leafs had those 2x first rounders, Minten and Cowan all bundled up for a Rantanen pursuit. Kind of goes to show you'd get more mileage blowing your brains out moving picks at the very high end as opposed to paying retail plus on less impactful pieces.

Based on what they got for Rantanen, it would seem plausible that Knies + 2 1sts would have gotten it done; or that Cowan, Minten and 2 1sts would have also gotten it done.

That being said, personally, I wouldn't have done it.

There is no situation where Rantanen and Marner can both be signed... even if Marner needs to be paid more than Rantanen (he shouldn't, Marner's deal should probably be exactly Rantanens), you're better off to overpay Marner by $1m then you are to lose all those assets.

Sounds like Toronto just wasn't for him. I imagine we came in around 12-13m and Dallas has low taxes.

Rantanen type players like that is pretty rare. Especially under those circumstances.

Keep in mind we have resale value on both our acquisitions which potentially claws back a lot of that cost. Carlo could get a 1st+ next year for instance.

I dont think they look at it as "resale"; versus getting 2 guys that are paid a heck of a lot less than they would command as UFAs this summer.

If Carlo was on the open market, I see no reason why he wouldn't get something similar to what Nikita Zadorov or Matt Roy got.

If Laughton was on the open market, he's probably looking at a Domi-level number.

Yes, opportunities acquire players of Rantanens ilk do not come around very often, but giving up all those assets, when the broader implication is that you're simply swapping Marner for Rantanen, seems flawed.

I believe it was the higher ups in Pittsburgh that plotted this TDL plan, not Dubas.

Disclaimer: the above statement made for the sole purpose of TDL soundtrack provided by the Dubasite heads exploding….
Dubas is the higher up in Pittsburgh.

Lineup looking like:

Knies-Matthews-Marner
McMann-Tavares-Nylander
Robertson-Laughton-Domi
Lorentz-Kampf-Jarnkrok
Patches
Holmberg

Come playoff time I think Patches can slide beside Laughton or Tavares here.

Rielly-Carlo
McCabe-Tanev
Benoit-OEL
Myers

Stolie
Woll
Missing that 2LW trade

Danford + 2nd + Robertson could have gotten a very good 2LW allowing everyone to slide down back to where they should be (McMann L3, Robertson L4 or scratch)

Rakell@50%,
Schwartz@50%,
Geekie@50%,
Donato@50%,
McCann@50%

so, no point in watching the draft until 2028 for Leafs fans?
Who cares! If we win the cup in the next 3 years nobody is going to give a shit about the draft for at least a decade. Minten is getting totally overhyped on here. He’s a solid prospect but his ceiling is 3rd line C. We just got a 6ft5 28 year old RHD signed for 3.45 mil on the cap for the next two years. It was a homerun trade

I would have liked to see them try hard for Coyle in the Carlo deal rather than Laughton, but the cap was tight unless there was some way to offload Domi + Benoit.

Easily our best D-core in the last 20 years.

Pretty much. I think Berube will try to form a stronger checking line though, so you can probably swap Domi and McMann, something along those lines. But generally there are a lot of combinations that could work. We'll see.

I think I like Myers as #6 ahead of Benoit, though Benoit's value in ahole-per-60 metrics in the playoffs is valuable.

If Carlo can't get Rielly going, it might be fun to try:

McCabe-Tanev
OEL-Carlo
Rielly-Myers
Benoit

....but if we can't get Rielly going, we're in trouble. So I hope Rielly-Carlo works

Kypreos said that the Leafs offered 2 first rounders and Cowan and Minten.

I question how this is possible when they dont have the cap space? How many players and picks would they have to move to get that space?

For me, once he picked up Carlo, I prefer him and Laughton while keeping Cowan as their defense is now Cup worthy even if their Core never rise to the occasion.

He would have been in effect a backup plan for Marner and most certainly the better option.

I think OEL-Myers ultimately become the third pair. Benoit is just having such a tough year it’s hard to justify forcing OEL to play out of position.

Curious how the lines play out because acquiring Laughton just to pair him with some combination of Domi, Robertson, Jarnkrok seems wasteful.

I think we may ultimately see

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Nylander - Tavares - Marner
McMann - Laughton - Robertson/Pacioretty
Lorentz - Kampf - Jarnkrok

The Legend of Brett Lebda continues

Brett Lebda was a minus-3 so that we could have Scott Laughton and Brandon Carlo
