We essentially traded two 1sts and a high 2nd today for Laughton and Carlo. However, Carlo isn't a rental and we have Laughton for next year so that does feel better

You can sell Laughton next year if you want.

Carlo in. Couple years and recapture if you want.

Tre smart. Dubas dumb..that's the story.

Only minten is out the door so we’d have to find someone else to fill that role in order to trade Laughton

As far as the East is concerned, the top of the Atlantic got tougher, while the Metro got worse or stagnated. Devils lost Hughes to injury and didn’t add anything of significance. Carolina is basically the same as they were before Rantanen, with Stankoven in for Necas and good assets for future trades. Capitals are still great but Beauvillier isn’t a needle mover. Rangers and Jackets aren’t materially different than before.

Us, the Lightning, and Panthers are all in. Really hope the Leafs can do something substantial this postseason because our future is toast. That’s fine given where we are as a franchise, but this team really needs to have some postseason success already.

Lol the Carlo pick is top 5 protected
Top 10 is like league standard. Weird thing to fold on
Slightly odd retention amount as well.

I suspect Bruins didn't really want to retain, but after Leafs scrambled with the Pens they needed 15%, so Bruins took back what they could in the final minutes.

Everything is the worst it's ever been, but ironically we might finally do well this year because there happens to be a lot of luck available - for the first time.

No first round pick in the next 3 years, Matthews is playing like a 8M center instead of highest paid player in the league, Marner and Tavares might be gone next year, and we lost our cost controlled 2/3 center prospect. Oh! And we are still probably underdogs in a series against Florida or Tampa......

Well..... we can't say we didn't go for it!
It’s it’s no wonder leafs nation gets made fun of so much
We don’t know how to appreciate when someone makes a legit effort to make us better, always criticize

We finally have not 1 but two very reliable rhd top tier defenders
All the moves today wasn’t just the fact that we got 2 good players on very good cap hits but were able to now play everyone in the right spots where they can actually have sucees
No more complaining about rielly s partner, this should also not just give us an upgrade with Carlo but make rielly better, move other defenders down to 3rd pairing so very comfortable with the back end.

Loughton is a legit 3rd line centre that can play in hard games, move domi to wing and current wingers to forth line so overall we def got better and more reliable
And no future picks well I heard today our top 5 defenders and our stars except Marner are all signed up for future so now we only need to make small tweaks anyways going forward so!!
And if Carlos doesn’t pan out we can move him next year and get a 1st back

So for once be happy

If anything, Leafs should have probably grabbed a little more defensive depth? If I'm being picky I just don't know how deep they go incase of injuries..but I also can't say there's any 5/6/7 types that went in trade that I would have liked paying the price for (Schenn, Dumoulin).. maybe Jokiharju but not sure if that works cap wise..

They don't have the roster space though. They already have 7D and 14Fs. You could have maybe punted a forward for a depth D but we already used up 2 young forwards to bolster the team. Benoit and Myers are fine #6/7s.

Our depth when we start hitting injuries include Mermis, Rifai, Webber and Benning. There's also Kokkonen, Niemela and Mattinen but I don't think they'll get a game before the other 4.

No 1st round picks for the next 3 drafts. Ouch!! Prospect pool average at best. We currently have 2 forwards with NMC, soon to be 4. GM will have his hands tied if they don't waive to be traded. Scary future for the organization with no outs!! Good luck, as this will have to be the group that needs to go all the way, otherwise it will never happen, long rebuild if they don't.

I get it. The roster space is tight. I would have tried to just upgrade on Benoit altogether. But that's me being picky.

I know this is tough to comprehend due to our TDL past but both Laughton and Carlo can be Leafs for the next few years. As it’s not to fit Laughton on the team with his cap hit.

That’s a huge difference from before where most guys are one playoffs and done.

Based on Kypreos' reporting it sounded like the Leafs had those 2x first rounders, Minten and Cowan all bundled up for a Rantanen pursuit. Kind of goes to show you'd get more mileage blowing your brains out moving picks at the very high end as opposed to paying retail plus on less impactful pieces.

Tidy business from Tre at the deadline. We got stronger with these moves.
IF our superstars manage to pull their heads out of their colectives arses and PERFORM IN THE POSTSEASON, we have a shot at doing something noteworthy.
Not holding my breath.

No question, but also understandable that Carolina took an NHL player over prospects. I'm also pretty skeptical that Rantanen would have signed with the Leafs.

I'd imagine that they ran out of cap space, given that they had to move Dewar and Timmins to bring in Carlo with retention.

That being said, you take the Schenn deal as an example... (2nd and 4th). He also makes $2.75m (which we definitely did not have). Trying to find defencemen that make at or near league-minimum is very tough... or you're paying for retention and the Leafs have already burned quite a few draft picks.

Myers/Benoit will have to do as the #6/7. They have Rifai, they have Matt Benning who could theoretically come in as well.

I would've been over the moon if we landed him with an extension.

I read somewhere that they wanted Knies though
