The conspiracy side of me thinks the team wants to move on from Mitch

I don't know if they want to but I think this allows them to put a number in stone and not budge from it. If they got Rantanen they likely offer Marner the same contract and roll the dice with a weak 2/3C next season and MR/MM/WN on the wings. If Marner refuses they simply re-sign Tavares or go after Bennett.

I think they now have a number for Marner and an 8th year. It's up to him if he wants to squeeze the team and leave. I'm not saying I would do it, but I bet it's something around 12.5M (based on nothing but my own speculation.)

Would it though? The bulk of Tavares's money is allotted to Rantanen. Marner gets a couple million dollars bump on his current contract, with a rising cap and ridding of a contract of a lesser player (ie. Domi) covering the extra salary being added.

I think both could be fit in, and I cannot think of a better foursome in the league than had it been Matthews, Marner, Rantanen and Nylander.
Who is 2C? Also once you make the Rantanen deal, Laughton and Carlo won’t be on the team. Not to mention the 5 mil salary Leafs paying will be eaten up by the extra million between Rantanen and JT and another 1.25mil for MM’s new contract.

Also both McCabe and Woll new deals will be about 5mil more caphit combined towards next year cap. That would cover by the rise in cap.

Even if you trade Calle, Kampf and Domi, you need to use their combine caphit on a 2C, 3C, 3rd line winger, bottom 6 forward, and a mid pairing D man.

Rantanen, Minten, Grey = JT or a 2C like Bennett, Knies, 2 1sts, Carlo and Laughton

I think I would take the Leafs deals over Rantanen.

if things go very sideways this year. Leafs should have about 27m to change around the forward core. Before any trades of Domi/Kampf/Jarnkrok

I like what Tre did today, and I'll say this as someone whose hardly his biggest fan.

He got two impact players at reduced caphit with term for a high, but acceptable price (especially relative to what other teams paid)..and got bailed out a bit by Schenn using his ntc to prevent a trade.

The semi-serious talks on Rantanen are pretty interesting, makes one wonder what that says about the lack of progress on a potential Marner extension

Also we’d be going into the playoffs with 2 of Timmins, Benoit or Myers taking regular shifts
Exactly, forgot about not having Laughton and Carlo.

So the real equation is
Rantanen, Minten and Grey or Knies, one of JT or MM, a top 6 UFA signing that could be Bennett, 2 1sts, Carlo and Laughton.

Aren't the same morons who insist that Marner's next contract is going to be around $16/$17 million the samed morons who said Matthews' next contract would be in the $16/$17 million range?

If Marner gets more than $12.5 million I'll be surprised. And the fact is, $12 million is the floor, no matter how much whiners wish it wasn't. Don't want Marner at $12 million? Don't sign Nylander for $11.5 million. THAT comparison is a no-brainer.

The question is how many teams in the league is willing to pay 12.5mil for MM?

At least three deals didn’t, as they didn’t pay 12.5mil for Rantanen.

I am thrilled Tre was able to address our biggest needs, at great cap hits, with term, and within the context of the insane price of doing business this year, I think they did pretty well on cost as well.

3C, top 4 RHD, both significant additions to the PK as well.

Wow what a sweetheart deal for Florida on Marchand.
Clearly Boston just doing right by him.

Upgrading our rivals and not even making them pay up for it feels bad though. Damn

This is the Leafs last hurrah with this core for all intents and purposes. No 1sts in the next three drafts, and a limited prospect pool. They won't be able to add anyone of real note at future deadlines for a while in all likelihood.

Wish we got rid of domi for Murphy woulda sure up the baccend and I would feel a lot more confident with myers or benoit as 7 with none of them in the top 6

The Leafs should not have any cap problems this summer, and then there is a cap jump that can be used to add in the summer of 2026.

The D is signed longterm, and Cowan is probably on the team for the 2026-2027 season which means a top 9 winger on a rookie deal and more flexibility.

All to say that they are not in cap hell.
