Rantanen is over qualified to get an extension here anyway based on what this team dishes out.

Probably would have to give him a stake in ownership to get it over the line.

Re-signing him with Matthews and Nylander signed also presents similar cap structure we have had issues with for awhile now

You never know how his career will go. This may uend up being a blessing and who knows we may get lucky and save that space for our Toronto boy coming home in a year.

That trade is a bit of a wash for me. Rantanen is by far the best player, but he's another winger signed for 13-14M (in Toronto) long-term. At least with Laughton they have him super cheap for next year and they can decide what to do with Marner and Tavares or go out and sign a guy like Bennett. I also like the Carlo trade alot. Laughton / Carlo provide alot more flexibility going forward.

I'm torn on what to do with Marner but it likely ends up being Marner(8yr)/Laughton(1yr)/Carlo(2yr) versus Rantanen(8yr). I think I would have been content with either direction.

If there is no Cap, 100%.

But there is a cap and Ranta is 12mil plus another 2mil for two min wage players and the other three are at 6mil max.
That’s a difference of 8mil.
Which can be Bennett.

So the equation would be

Ranta, Holmberg Dewar, Timmins or Bennett, Carlo, Cowan and Laughton.

Rantanen would’ve been too risky for a guy that hasn’t looked great in Carolina. Sounds like they would’ve needed to give Knies to get it across the line. Would also likely have to let Marner walk as well. Knies + 1sts + Marner leaving is way too much.
