You don't trade Lehkonen if the playoffs are the goal in 2023. I'm kind of shocked so many people on here are missing that, but he was literally the only player on this team that didn't get caved in 5 on 5. Its pretty clear what HuGo are doing here.

It depends what their plans are in UFA. We don't have a lot of cap space.

I don't think they expect to make the playoffs next year, I think they expect to compete for them though.

Copp is going to be pretty expensive, Zacha won't be all that cheap and Motte is much worse than Lehkonen.

Lehkonen is in the same category as Danault, a lot of fans on here don't seem to understand how much he brings to the table. They will eventually though.

I don't think he does, just that it doesn't make sense for a contending team to acquire him at his cost right now. They're gearing up for a playoff run and it isn't the time to get someones game in order, hence why someone playing out of his mind like Lehkonen (or even Kulak) can get such a nice return. I mean, Kulak was playing well. As a future UFA, you don't really care about 2019-2020 Kulak or 2022-2023 Kulak, just how he's playing right now and whether if its sustainable for this year. That's what'll dictate your price.

In Petry's case, you can be a lot more confident he'll get his game back into order after this summer, with a full offseason of training, no finger injury, no cup run, no COVID restrictions, etc. He's an offseason move.

The biggest problems on this team are, by far, Gallagher and Price. Hoffman is going to be a hard sell too, but his contract is up around the time this team should be trending upwards. Armia and Dvorak I think have legitimate value, though in Armia's case likely not that much.

He also said the players understand that sometimes you have to take a step back before you can take a step forward even though you are still trying to win games. This was clearly a reference to next season IMO.

Hughes mentioned we are always looking to address positions of weakness within the organization when talking about the Barron trade. He didn't specify roster. This leads me to believe we are not done with our structural moves in Hockey Ops.
