I think some folks are undervaluing role guys at this point in the season. Guys like Vanek and PAP are borderline top-6 guys who bring nothing to the table if they're not scoring. Stalberg is a bottom-6 guy with speed and some grit who has been a key cog in an elite penalty-killing unit.

The bottom line is that Stalberg may not be as talented as Vanek or PAP, but at this point in the season, he's more valuable. I don't think it had anything to do with timing. Stalberg just does more to help a team win.

Not really the case for me. I think what Stalberg got was just fine and justified. I personally (could still be wrong) just don't think JMAC falls into the same category as Stalberg in terms of value to a team. He doesn't have the speed and frankly, is a worse player. He's a role player who IMO, isn't a very good role player.

Looks like we don't have to get too worked up about missing out on Duchene / Landeskog.

Is Ronnie's news conference watchable by anyone? Horrible quality on my phone and computer.

I do wonder if Sakic is going to fall into the same trap the Oilers did- refusing to trade players for less than a highly inflated idea of what they're actually worth and in the process failing to address critical weaknesses of the team, keeping the team at the bottom of the league for far longer than is necessary.

... and then end up trading one/both of them for less than ideal value.

The problem is, that guys like Duchene and Landeskog (with 2+ years on their deals) typically aren't traded at the deadline. It limits the options when you try to make a move mid season.

I expect things to heat up off season on one of those guys.

So every time we think Yzerman's back is against the wall with respect to roster, trades, cap, etc... he finds a way out. He basically got out from under Filpulla's cap hit and NMC without costing anything.

Filp+4th+Conditional 7th for Streit
Then
Streit to Pit for a 2018 4th

So basically, he moved a 2017 for a 2018 4th rounder and got out from under that contract.

So Yzerman gets Philly to retain part of Streit's salary, then immediately flips Streit to Pittsburgh.

Flyers now paying salary for Pittsburgh's playoff rental.

Something tells me we won't be seeing any more TB/PHI trades for a while.

4.7% is what Philly retained. What an odd amount.

What I don't understand is why Philly wanted Filpulla. The entire league had Tampa up against the wall....but I guess they didn't see it like that.

In the end Yzerman probably now has enough cash to sign all 3 of those free agent forwards.

So to recap: Tampa flipped Filp to Philly, sent Streit straight to Pittsburgh.
