I believe so too. They'll get their top-10 pick, draft a D, and then use the McKenna + Verhoeff/Smits/Carels combo as the 'retool' combined with whatever other piece(s) Knies brings back. In theory if its a highly touted center prospect, fantastic. If its a D, even better.

Imagine Knies (and whatever balancer is necessary) for Rinzel, Moore, and the 4OA. We take one of Carels or Reid. Moore slots 3C immediately, Rinzel can pair with McCabe or OEL, and (say its Carels) that 3LD spot is open for him next year if he decides to transition to the NHL then (highly doubt he's going to play NHL minutes this year). That is an incredibly solid return for Knies and addresses several gaps in our lineup.

Honestly, I can’t think of a better bottom six C in terms of what we need. Speed, size, age, physicality, quality hockey player, Right handed. Alas, the distraction around it would be too much.

There isn't consensus on the D in the draft, and it's really considered a Top 5 group of D this year. The draft is easily 8/9 players deep. Sure, the 4OA is more valuable... but any of Smits, Carels, Verhoeff, Reid and even Rudolph could be available at 8/9/10 in this draft. McKenna, Stenberg, Malholtra, these five D, Bjork make a compelling top nine.

Maybe it wasn't plan A and done, but Plan A - Done.

Drawing the connection from rumors from Elliotte that the Leafs were given permission from Florida to talk. Which makes sense why Elliotte said what he said and then threw the tidbit about Ersson. Im guessing a signed Bob for Ersson.

Editing This: They havent agreed to terms but the interest is legit and the Leafs are exploring the logistics.

Hellebuyck is intriguing because he controls where he's going to go as well. Wasn't that good last year and isn't usually a playoff performer but the regular season it's hard to find a better guy

if he waives it will be for a American team.

That’s the whole point. When you accept the 7OA you’re at the bottom end of the cream of the crop and not in control of what you’re selecting. Why would I blow my brains out to make this trade with Seattle not having total control over what I can select.

I’ll put it another way for you. If Chicago and Seattle were discussing a pick swap between 4OA and 7OA I’m pretty sure the delta in picks and control over what you can pick is worth a second rounder.

I think I only pull the trigger on the draft floor when I see how the board plays out

Because the Leafs have their own rankings and if their #3/4 guy is still on the board at 7, that can be the difference
